SOUND DESIGN LESSIONS EVERY WEEK: • Sound Design Lesson 1
JC303, a Bass Synthesizer Audio Plugin, stands as a dedicated effort to bring the renowned Roland TB-303's sound to musicians and producers across diverse platforms and plugin formats. It is a JUCE port of Robin Schmidt's Open303 DSP engine, aiming to make the powerful Open303 accessible to a broader audience.
Our primary objective is to offer a seamless experience, allowing musicians and producers to harness the incredible power of the Open303 DSP engine. Beyond just replicating the distinctive sound of the TB-303, JC303 also endeavors to faithfully emulate the iconic TB-303 step sequencer. We recognize that the TB-303's unique character is not solely about its sound but is also defined by the entire gear, especially its legendary sequencer.
About Open303, the project embodies the spirit of open-source development. Originating from Robin Schmidt's call to the KVRAudio forum community, it evolved over a decade with enthusiasts delving into oscilloscopes, engaging in circuit reverse engineering analyses, and passionately debating the inner workings of the TB-303. The result is the finest TB-303 emulation ever created, available as open source. Open303 excels in achieving high-quality Virtual Analog (VA) filters in the challenging realm of DSP.
Key Features of JC303:
Pure Sound: Offers an authentic reproduction of the TB-303 sound.
Cross-Platform Compatibility: Accessible on Windows, MacOS, and Linux platforms.
Plugin Versatility: Compatible with VST3, LV2, and AU formats, ensuring seamless integration with various Digital Audio Workstations (DAWs).
Future-Ready: The project's roadmap includes the development of a faithful step sequencer, capturing the essence of the original TB-303 experience. This ongoing commitment ensures that JC303 evolves alongside the needs and expectations of its users.
In summary, JC303 is not just a plugin; it's a dedication to preserving and enhancing the legacy of the TB-303, offering musicians a reliable and versatile tool for their creative endeavors.

Awesome, I heard that this new standard called 'Clap' is really powerful. What DAW did you use to try it ? In this video, I used Reaper in Vst3 format.

This one sounds really nice. The waveform blend and slide control are interesting and not part of the original TB-303. I think these are nice additions. Others may have a different opinion about these mods. I tried this VST myself, and it seems that the velocity threshold to trigger accent is at a different position than I am used to from other TB-303 emulations or clones. Maybe its something for the developers to look into.

I appreciate your detailed feedback on the Plugin. I tried it with the pedal you recommended in the other comment, thanks, it sounds really good. Feel free to share your thoughts with the developers if there's a feedback channel available, as user input often plays a crucial role in shaping the development and improvement of software products.

@@Sheeninthebox I have to dig deeper and take some time to actually compare the velocity accent triggers and double check my DAW settings, before I can make a proper report. By the way, if you are using Windows, you may also try Plusdistortion by Distorque. That's close to an MXR M104 distortion+ pedal.

@@Engineeer No, I'm on Mac, so I don't think I can try it. If you want to write an article for my new blog, I would be happy to publish it. Perhaps about some plugins you would like to recommend, or if you have other ideas to write about, think about it and let me know!

But does the Decay knob work? Because in ten minutes of experimentation I wasn't able to manipulate any Decay! For the rest it's nice, nothing amazing, inside my DAW with the stock instruments, I can replicate a better 303...It's certainly a nice vst for those who don't know how to build the sound or for those who are a bit hurry, shame only about the Decay which seems not to work.
@Sheeninthebox

what software are you using? I would like to make a video on how to reproduce the 303 sound with the stock plugins. If you want to explain the process to me, obviously I will mention you in the tags giving you the credits.

The Decay it’s ok, tester right now on my MacBook in Logic Pro
@AgrumeAcid
@AgrumeAcid 2 месяца назад
You're right, I confirm that the Decay works... I had difficulty hearing it for two reasons: basically I'm used to slightly wider Decays, this produces a very subtle change... and then I always had the modulation off, with the modulation on, the Decay is heard much more! I use Renoise. Few people use it, so it won't be useful to many people to know how to build it in Renoise... on FL it's not needed, there's the Transistor Bass (but it can certainly be built there too), on Ableton Live, I know it's there a 303 in Max... It would be interesting to do it on Reaper, or on Logic Pro (to be useful to more people), but I don't have a Mac and I would have to study the procedure on Reaper...

@@AgrumeAcid Renoise, is it paid? I'm hearing this for the first time, I didn't know him before. Anyway, thank you for your comprehensive comments. Make good music and stay creative.

@@SheenintheboxRenoise is a modern tracker, basically it is a DAW like any other, but it has the interface of an old tracker, therefore a vertical sequencer in which to write C4, D#4 etc... to compose melodies. It may seem destabilizing to those who aren't used to it, when I discovered it I thought "what is this delirium?", but with a little patience I understood it and fell in love with it. However... yes, it has a rather cheap paid license (around $80, the price may vary a little due to taxes in different countries), but the demo allows you to evaluate well whether it is worth buying it or not, you really have few limitations like: you can't use the Asio driver but you have to go with the driver of your OS, and maybe you can't export the songs, but you can save the projects made in the demo to recover them when you purchase the software.. for the rest, the demo is complete of all the features and has no time limits, so you can play with the demo for up to 30 years... However, it is a niche product, designed and created to be a niche product for a circle of tracker enthusiasts, I am only telling you this to warn you to buy the software only if you like it as you see it...many people buy it, then they enter the forum to ask for the addition of a lot of standard features belonging to other DAWs, and are disappointed to discover that they will not be satisfied...The developers of Renoise are not interested in becoming millionaires with this project, so they are not interested in satisfying any request just because people paid. I have a question. Could you by any chance tell me what exactly the Accent does? (in this plugin or in general)... it is the control that I have the most difficulty in constructing faithfully... I know that basically the Accent opens the filter, raises the volume slightly and shortens the Decay a little, but I don't know anything else , so that's the only control I try to replicate using instinct, ears, and what little information I have... the result is definitely interesting and usable, I'm pretty proud of my emulation, but it's not super faithful to the original, especially because of the Accent.

Needs the distortion circuit
@Sheeninthebox
@Sheeninthebox 5 месяцев назад
I'm not exactly sure where the distortion circuit is placed in the signal path, but you could throw in a distortion plugin before or after the 303 bass line.
@Sheeninthebox
@Sheeninthebox 5 месяцев назад
@russb6277 Richy had commented saying that the distortion circuit was missing, perhaps meaning external to the 303. Honestly, I've never read the manual, but I trust you; you seem confident.

@@Sheeninthebox Real 303 units don't have a distortion circuit, but that legendary 303 tone comes from the combination of a 303 running through distortion, specifically a Rat pedal for that legendary authentic tone. Most modern 303 plugins incorporate this into the interface these days, it just makes it bite in that familiar way.
@Sheeninthebox
@Sheeninthebox 5 месяцев назад
@@richymoore It would be fantastic to find a plugin that emulates the typical distortion of a Rat pedal or some emulation, at least to achieve a similar tone.
