Sometimes it's nice to take a back seat for a couple of hours and watch someone else make light work of a job. We have plenty of our own mini digger projects ahead but couldn't turn down Craig's offer to bring his 'toys' over!

Operating a digger is a real skill. Once you add the tilt/rotate function it's just another level. The main 4 functions (of the arm joints and left/right rotation of the digger) are controlled by two levers. You usually then add a thumbwheel to each lever for the rotation and tilt of the bucket. That means you may be combining 6 different functions at once. All the functions are variable speed and when you add or remove a function it often affects the speed of all the others. You can also drive forward and backwards with your feet at the same time. I'm sure the guys who make this look easy could retrain as helicopter pilots!

Funny you say that, Craig is actually a heli pilot and drone operator. Guess that helps. 👍

Tim you can buy a Flail mower attachment for Mini excavators. An attachment like that will make caring for the edges along your stream and around you pond much safer, easier and quicker also (an a bonus small tree and brush removal), get rid of the dumper and buy a Mini. I hope that helps D
@TheRestorationCouple
@TheRestorationCouple 2 года назад
With that attachment I reckon you could take up topiary! Seen some amazing uses over the past couple of days actually. Clever kit but not sure our old dumper would find much more than a bucket. 😬

At about 4:35 you mentioned using hardcore to improve the grip on the bank. I would strongly recommend placing a geotextile membrane (there are various brands available) under the hardcore as it will stop it from sinking into the mud during the winter. If the crossing is going to be used regularly then it may be worthwhile also digging out more of the topsoil and treat it as a short track and use different sizes of hardcore and gravel compacted down to form the surface. But if that isn't so much of a priority then just the layer of geotextile membrane under the hardcore should do the trick.

Would it be feasible to lower your sleeper 'wall' by a course or so (the one around where you're building the cabin) and use those?
@TheRestorationCouple
@TheRestorationCouple 2 года назад
Had thought about that however the soil is banked right to the top at the moment.

@@richardlyons7582 Chris just has a gift for operating, his Volvo is like an extension of his arms, plus there aren’t many people who could burry an excavator up to the cab in pond mud, and still make it to dry land without sweating 😅

Just a thought, wouldn't concrete fence posts do the same job and sleeper's. And the cost is alot cheaper
@TheRestorationCouple
@TheRestorationCouple 2 года назад
I had considered concrete gravel boards for the same reason. We will see how we get on with some hardcore.

From a purely practical point of view long term a properly laid hedge along the bank will be stock proof and immune to most floating debris bar a tree or caravan. In the short term do what you need to use the land just leave the current hedge alone so the stems can grow and get laid at a later point.

Just wondering, what sort of dog is Maggie?
@dhrsander
@dhrsander 2 года назад
Why not build a border with reclaimed wood to prevent soil washing down again? But maybe only in the middle straight parts because you don't want to get stuck on a corner with your vehicles.
@TheRestorationCouple
@TheRestorationCouple 2 года назад
Good idea. Probably better to stake/stack logs there as plenty of fallen trees nearby. 👍

Maggie is like our dog, cute and too stupid for its own good. Great they are not spooked by machines and tools but then they stand in the way and you can’t see them. I start the saw. Dog is stood next to me waiting for the off cuts to chew. That is fine until he is chewing the work piece which you have laid down and he is munching 🙈
