Then why you disagree with ol’ man teacherdude?

JD learned a bunch about hitting from Cabrera. He said so himself while in Detroit.

not bashing your channel but dont post a video talking about JD and Mookie talking rear elbow then cut in every 5 min to talk. if ur gonna do that at least put that your putting your take in
@kaylamaples7724

Kinda hard for him to cut in every five minutes when the video is only 5 minutes long. Just saying, if your going to critique someone at least be accurate. Not to mention, his channel is an educational baseball channel...I welcome his opinion.

Crazy I’ve been studying this very thing closely .. from Williams to Altuve .. back elbow slots front elbow up .. bat path

Gino Tamayo well isnt it back elbow noticeably up? What do you mean in your comment exactly?

I thought they were talking about his posture, he’s up (back & shoulders), then he’s down.... now (getting loaded & shoulders & back down & in).

Definitely discussing Trout’s right elbow. His initial rear arm/elbow set up is very similar to Cody Bellinger just from the opposite side. It’s interesting to compare their loads. Great video!! Thx for sharing

Tom O'Shea yes they do the pullback. All great hitters do it to give themselves the most amount of room for error even if theyre late or early, perfect or not perfect through the hitting zone. Another great example is khris davis from Oakland. Question for you. Is getting the back elbow up like these guys considered wrapping? Wont it take long to get your barrel through the zone against guys throwing harder like in the upper 80s plus range? Feel like all hitters do it but I’d like your thoughts

@@SolitarySoldier I'll give you perspective on your questions. Getting the elbow up is not wrapping or what I consider it to be. What I was shown/taught is that when you get your elbow way way up there (which is a bad habit to me) you have to change your posture to do that and usually the batter ends up twisting their shoulders to get to that position. Each player is different and just like throwing their arm slots will be different however if they are really consistant with their arm/elbow slots and don't twist their shoulders excessively the better and more consistant they will be.

StrikeForce MTB gotcha. Ive been so confused about the pullback theory for soo long but i see all hitters doing it now (my 2 favorites being donaldson and altuve)... So wrapping is when my number on the back of my jersey is fully visible to the pitcher and then i have to fly open because I’m closed and coiled in to the point its unbelievably exaggerated and it will not allow me to catch up to high velocity pitchers or really anything. All i was told was don’t artificially push your hands back, your hands walk away from your body and the bat will be around a 45 degree angle with the knob facing the catcher and you should feel your back elbow up and stretch in your front lat muscle. If you feel all of that then you are in a good ideal launch position ready to punish baseballs. I just thought for so long getting the back elbow up and doing the pullback like jd martinez is talking to betts about trout in this video was wrong and considered wrapping. Thanks!

@@SolitarySoldier I'm not sure about the lat muscle as you described but with my swing I always hit the best when I was relaxed. Maybe I was unaware of it but the only tension I could "feel" when I was hitting good was in my core especially when my hips fired and I got that good hip/shoulder seperation. If I was a bit tight or tense somewhere my shoulders pulled/tensed up as well as my forearms and I could hit well at all. This is what my college coaches told me and that's pretty much word for word minus a few slang words if you know what I mean. They helped me find my groove and I learned a lot. I'm not at the level of coach Matt but I watch and learn from all level of players so I just try to help the best that I can.

I think they are talking about exactly what you said but focusing more on the fact how far "under" his back elbow gets, how both his elbows work like a CLOCK going 6 to 12 rather than say compared to most hitters that doesn't get that deep or under. They are thinking is there an advantage to that and if I try it what will happen. I would love to see you do a before and after JD Martinez swing change. I believe it is so hard to really change a swing, would love to see it and the results.

I agree with your assessment. But even more significant is the fact you have two great hitters with enough humility to keep studying others who are great.

I think they may be talking about Trout's hands. I feel like he is starting his hands up on load then just focusing on getting on plane with ball as soon as possible and hitting through it. JMO

I think they're talking about Mike's load approach. Elbow starts out vertically High then Settles to a neutral rearward elbow draw before hitting. When his elbow levels out his hands become parallel to his rear deltoid. This sets his hands in a common loaded position so he can accurately find shoulder plane, "tilt" before his elbow tucks into slot and then finally his hands extend to the ball. My .02$
