on this episode were going over our new 2022 John Deere gator 835m and comparing it to the Polaris 900xp. These are just my thoughts and experiences but i hope it helps. Choosing the right UTV for the farm can be a hard decision and some of our key components are certainly cost of operation, which we have found to be very pricey with the Polaris. Also, reliability as well as resale value. For us it's definitely one sided!

We have an 835m and use it on the farm. You mentioned the air filter and the ease of cleaning it. The problem we have is the dust from dirt and gravel roads will clog that filter in no time. John Deer makes an item called a snorkel that mounts to the back of the cab that allows the air intake to be at the upper part of the cab. The snorkel is inexpensive and takes about 30 to 45 minutes to install. I highly recommend this upgrade.

Thanks for the info, I'm with you. We've had a problem with that as well. Along with something I've learned not to favor. The way the cab sticks out were constantly throwing mud all over the door and door handle. Both spots are highly used areas of the door always getting "mud" (we hope) on our hands. 😆

@@afarmlife I've complained about the mud on the cab and doors on every JD video on youtube for the past three years and they're not listening. The problem is the 835 is a larger platform and JD just repurposed the bed. It would have been a home run if they just made new bedsides with larger fender flares. I bought the Gator for work. I employ pipeline construction inspectors and the cab on the 835 with HVAC is very nice for them and their tools and paperwork. I'm not crazy about the Big Horn tires. I'm on my second set and three of the four of them won't hold air. I think the pipeline Right of Ways are hard on the tires. We work a lot in NE PA and upstate NY and it sees a LOT of mud. A lot of mud. It has 700 hours on it and as far as I can tell there's been no belt wear. The 835 is a snow plowing monster. It is unbelievable. When we need more UTV's I will rent them and I agree with your assessment in comparing the Gator to the Ranger. Now the Rangers are rental units and they are usually rough around the edges. We rent some Kubota RTV's and I'm not really a fan of those. One with a snow blower would be nice, but otherwise no. I have the nice JD black wheels on my 835 and let me tell you save your money. The fronts get TORE UP bad. Ohh one PRO-tip. Go around your doors and there's a bunch of bolts that hold the inner panel to the outer skin. Take them out one at a time and lock-tite them. They'll eventually vibrate out and you won't know until there's only two left in the whole door and it's shaking like crazy. Take care.

I will definitely go over the doors before that happens. I would agree the bed should be wider for sure to match the cab at least. We've actually developed a problem in the steering that's getting ready to go in the shop for the second time. We had the big horn tires on the last gator and really liked them but we don't run on real rocky terrain. We put 10ply tires on the ranger by Carlisle and they have been solid. I'm at a point where I think I'd rather lease the units myself.

@@afarmlife If you could lease a unit from new maybe then it could work. Some of the RTV's I leased had holes rotted in the floor. They were rough. The Rangers weren't much better. I haven't leased one in about two years now, but the last time I did the rental was $900 per month for a ranger with heat and soft doors. On the pipeline they do a lot of clearing with a Forester that kinda grinds the brush up but can leave a nasty spike. I'm not sure any tire is going to hold up to that. Rented a Diesel Club Car crewcab one time and I didn't think it was going to make it back to the truck. Barely enough power to climb on the trailer. Rented a JD 825 diesel crew cab with tracks on it and I'm not kidding backed it off the trailer and made a left turn backing up and the right front track hit a railroad tie and snapped the knuckle off the steering ram. It wasn't 10 feet from the trailer. Who knows how beat up the thing was from the last person to rent it. They fixed it and to be honest not sure how much I like the tracks. Again I have no idea how well maintained or set up the tracks were, but to me they seemed very fragile. They shake around and move and just don't seem to be "attached" very well. They gave me the feeling they're going to catastrophically fail any second. They never did. On a diesel Gator the experience was NOTHING like any youtube video you'll see with a set of tracks on a Maverick or a General or something like that. These things are expensive but for the work we do the cabbed HVAC units are as handy as a pocket on a T-shirt. Ohh there's a video on YT that shows a guy mounting jeep wrangler fender flares to the bed of his gator. that's about the best solution to the mud problem. Take care.

Didnt the rhino and hisun basically figure out the “cheap” intake location…? In the cab! It MAY add some cab noise, but still…

I have a J.D. 835r with over 9400 miles on. Still runs great. The snorkle upgrade would be great!

The reason I would not own a Polaris and there’s just one thing and that is the way the doors open John Deere for the win

The Maximas Tires aren’t worth a darn if you do much driving on hard surface concrete or asphalt roads. Especially the fronts wore out in weeks with road driving. I’ve replaced the front with a BF Goodrich mud and terrains tire. The rears are still OK but after this year will be shot as well.

Another good alternative is the Carlisle all trail. It is a fantastic tire for both on and off road. I went through a set of Ancla tires and two sets of maxis big horn 2.0s before switching to the Carlisle. They looked new after three years of heavy use.
