This aria from Georges Bizet's opera, Les pêcheurs de perles, is one of the most haunting and delicate melodies ever composed. Because of these qualities, it also makes it incredibly treacherous to sing. This piece has become so important to me within this last year, and I will continue to study it and improve it for the future and perhaps for the rest of my performing career. It was my great joy to sing this piece in Paris for live international television for the 25th anniversary of Mezzo TV!
In this enrapturing piece, Nadir wakes from his sleep after recognizing the singing voice of Laila, the young priestess he and his friend Zurga had fallen in love with years before. He follows the voice back to the temple, where his thoughts are confirmed as he catches another glimpse of her and sees her pull back her veil for a moment. He cannot resist the enchantment of the night. ("O nuit enchanteresse"" Her beauty ravishes his heart again, causing him to fall in love with her once more and forget his vows to his friend Zurga.
