Pour être plus précis il a été écartelé (il me semble) et quand la comptine dis par exemple "Jean-Petit qui danse, Jean-Petit qui danse, de son doigt il danse), ça fait en fait référence qu'à ce moment son doigt venait d'être arraché et ça marche ainsi pour chaque partie de son corps mentionnée dans cette comptine.

J'écoute souvent cette chanson avec mon petit fils. Je trouve la mélodie entraînante. Mais je ne savais pas l'origine triste de cette chanson. Ce jean petit qui a été torturer et Rouer de coups et qui sautillait pour échapper à ses bourreaux. Faire une chanson des souffrances de ce pauvre homme c'est méchant et cruelle .Mais en faire une comptine pour enfant c'est encore plus horrible. Paix à l'âme de Jean petit.
I live in Béarn (in the south west of France), and here we have the same song, but in the local language (Joan Petit que dança), and I know that behind the nice little nursery rhyme, this song hide a macabre and blody story. In fact, in 1643, during the "révolte des croquants", many farmer and peasantry rose against the tax they had to pay, called "la taille". They elected three leaders, Lafourche (litt. fork), Lapaille (litt. Hay) and Jean Petit (Little Jean). These three leaders were betrayed by notables, were arrested, and tortured with a wheel. This consited in fastenig and breaking the body of the prisonners, limb by limb. That's how Jean "danced" in a horrible way, first the finger, then the hand, etc. The "bearnish" (god that sounds weird) band called "Nadau" wrote a song about it, called "Auròst tà Joan Petit" (Requiem for Little Jean). The more you know! And sorry for my bad english!

Yeah!This song is amazing to teach body parts! We French people can have great fun singing about the body parts of a guy being tortured and each part "dancing" as it is disjointed and broken.
