France’s leading young harpsichordist performs works by two masters of the French Baroque. No surprises there, perhaps … but the harpsichordist in question is Jean Rondeau and the album is called Vertigo. It conceives the harpsichord in vividly theatrical terms. Vertigo takes its name from a dramatic, rhapsodic piece by Joseph-Nicolas-Pancrace Royer, who, along with Jean-Philippe Rameau, forms the focus of this album (recorded in the sumptuous Château d'Assas on its magnificent harpsichord).

I have played this piece many times on my Henri Hemsch harpsichord. And I have listened to it played on several other instruments and by several other artists. None can compare to the exquisite interpretation, inspiration and passion with which Monsieur Rondeau has infused this miraculous composition.

I've just got to say in a lifetime of loving the instrument, I do find Hempsh a tad heavy. But in Jean's excellent hands, technique, and thoughtful expression redefine what we've come to know. I only wish Ramau, or Couperin, were here to hear his interpretation. Damn, he's brilliant.

This is SO f***ing metal 🤘🏻 Incredible piece and performance. The goosebumps I get are euphoric...and this recording? *chef's kiss* It does an outstanding job of accentuating the power as well as the emotional diversity of the instrument. The soft passages sing, whereas the powerful ones pummel you into submission!

One of the things I love about this recording is that the audio engineering is outstanding. You can hear the sympathetic vibrations of all the strings and the resonance of the instrument, e.g. when Rondeau waits for the sound to fade away at 3:50-3:54, at the end of the piece, etc. A lot of harpsichord recordings don't manage to capture that stuff.

The harpsichord sounds very limited to many modern listeners used to concert grands, but great 18th century musicians poured their full passion into these little instruments. Rondeau gives us a wonderful sense of the emotion that the original harpsichordists brought to their playing.

It's true! Bach said that if you put your fingers on the right keys at the right time, the instrument plays itself! This young man is very gifted. How lucky I feel to visit his world for a few minutes. He's the best harpsichord player I've (ever) heard in all my years of listening to recordings and live performances of this instrument. Proud parents I guess, huh?

Jean Rondeau gives me hope for a new generation of musical talent to revivify the classical world. Young people are turned off by the stodgy, uptight culture surrounding this music, and Jean actively defies that trend while delivering fiery interpretations of music that is often plagued by the sterile, clinical, and academic approach that is so popular today.

I feel like people who cant reinterpret music, beeing trapped in one place, are not living up to their full potential of creating something of their own.

Been a percussionist since I was a child and also gang banging since age 7. Had already been shot by age 11 and had lost homeboys by then. I'm 36(37 next month) and still fuck with percussion and my peeps that play piano, base, cello, violin/viola, and though I stopped being "active" in the gang game, none of us is uptight at all. Many of my Dawgs graduated from LACHSA and went on to do great things(still doing them now). We hail from Central LA(McArthur park/westlake/Pico Union area) South Central LA, watts and Compton. We ain't up tight at all and our kids in this shiet now(new generations and all) , so maybe speak for ya self? 🤷🏾‍♂️

Jean Rondeau regenerates the art of the harpsichord in giving new insights musically as well as technically. He has it all with an astonishing liberty of expression. Composer - interpret - listener are a triangle that Rondeau makes his and with an intransigent aesthetic. This aesthetic is always different and interesting with nuances rarely heard on this instrument. His “naturalistic” interpretation makes wonders. Thank you for posting videos of this truly extraordinary interpret !

@The Lucifer - I wasn’t trying to dismiss the talents of the baroque masters. The fact that we still learn and perform the music of Bach, Vivaldi, Scarlatti, Rameau, Couperin, and Royer, etc. 100s of years later is a testament to their talents. Having learned figured bass and counterpoint and after attempting to compose each a Cannon, Invention, Prelude, and Fugue; I have a better appreciation for the talents of these composers than most. However, I’ve also had the experience of listening to 1000s of hours of musicians practicing this music only to have the resulting performance fail to evoke any emotion other than pity for the performer. So when someone delivers a performance of this level, that evokes this much emotion, and doesn’t sound like the aural representation of an accountant at work; I think the performer deserves some of the adulation.

The moment the lid opened my heart jumped a beat. What an instrument! And what a player. Jean Rondeau must own a time machine, he transports us back to the baroque period so effortlessly and adds in his phenomenal technical skills on the instrument to give us a performance so superlative that it feels like the harpsichord (treated with such revernce in the opening scene) will escape from the castle and rampage all around Europe. Chapeau Jean!

I ADORE Monsieur Rondeau as a deeply sensitive and passionate harpsichordist! Okay, the final cadence hanging on the dominant rather than the tonic SAFE resolution seems rather cruel, given the nature of the piece - a person terrified by heights, but it was already suggested in Lisa Goode-Crawford's modern Heugel edition of these sensational works. My beloved colleague Jean's rendition is similar to Alfred Hitchcock's terrifying film VERTIGO in the sense that even if the protagonist is saved from the height they're trapped within, do they ever psychologically recover or master such heights ever again? Rich and deep bass with brilliant trebles are that hallmark of French harpsichord such as Blanchet, at the price of clarity that one finds in Italian harpsichord, or roughness of tone that can be found in Flemish instruments. The Franco-Flemish is a paramount of its time, marrying the depth of French instruments with the texture of Flemish ones-see Ruckers-Taskin for a great example.

Oublié, ha, ha. J'ai pu prendre des cours et en acheter un (jolie copie d'ancien) à la fin des années 70, et pas à Paris. Depuis, il y a une classe de clavecin dans chaque conservatoire et grosse école de musique, des concerts et CD tant qu'on en veut, et tant mieux. Rondeau hérite de tous ceux qui l'ont précédé, et con brio!

The videos made to promote this album are each so well done; everyone involved should be so proud of the results. The positioning of the instrument in the room at the start made me think of the reverence they had for the instrument and it’s history with Scott Ross. The acoustic captures in that space is divine. Rondeau’s interpretation is original he cares about affecting the listener. I hope someday to hear him live!
