My nana Breland ( Cuthbert Grant) line was born in St Francis Xavier! My great grandmother Emma dechambeault is buried at St B ( same cemetery as Riel) …I read The north west is our mother last year and you brought to life my ancestors. Thank you so much for all your research! My nana hid her Metis lineage and stopped speaking French when I was young out of embarrassment.

The problem with this family is that they aren't quite sure who the first nation women is. There is actually no documentation about her 🤷

@cjkozy8901 grant. It seems they are not really sure about his mother. There are historians now saying that she might have originated in Montreal when Cuthbert grant sr was there..this DNA stuff these days can definitely help people however it can also invalidate certain claims.. those who proclaim to be RR might not be Rr after all ..there is actually more families who originated from ontario like the McLeod's that are now recognized as RR Metis it seems to be coming out more these days especially with DNA testing and kinship ties 🤷

Semantic definitions Starting in the 17th century, the French word métis was initially used as a noun by those in the North American fur trade, and by settlers in general, to refer to people of mixed European and North American Indigenous parentage in New France (which at that time extended from southern Quebec through the Great Lakes to the Mississippi River, thence southward to Mississippi and Alabama). At the time, it applied generally to French-speaking people who were of partial Indigenous and partial ethnic French descent. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-_xdZwaraAI0.htmlsi=SpcML4xy-jrnAt7V
