I feel they were still exploring their sound at this point, although this was a huge step from the kool-keith style backpacker stuff they were doing before. Servents in Heaven was their pinnacle imo, followed by LOB and VOG,

If you ever want to show someone new to hip hop what a masterpiece album is, it's this one. The most original sound in hip hop at the time. Underground and the internet wasn't what it is today. Still a masterpiece. Brilliant! Just brilliant!

This is the album that shaped my perception of lyrical depth and skill. Underground hip hop was (to me at least) never the same. This will always be the number one underground album to me. Shame their style evolved over time to suite the ever popular gangster shit we hear on the radio everyday.

I consider Violent By Design Top 20 Hip Hop Albums of Al Time. Never heard such a strong Intro song which reveals already the whole concept of the album. (Except for Wu Tang's "Bring Da Ruckus" in 93' & Wu Tang's "Triumph" in 97'.

Agree, grew up listening to these 3. From elementary, middle and high school, respectively. So thankful for napster and limewire for making independent hiphop accessible back in the day. It really was underground back then.
