Jeep Cherokee XJ MOD Increase Fuel Tank Capacity: DIESEL ONLY

In this video I show a simple hack to increase the fuel capacity of a standard 97+ XJ tank. A chap from Instagram called John kindly told me about the hack and I thought I would give it a try. Previously I was able to pump in 72 litres of delvis into the tank and after the hack I could get in 90 litres. I could squeeze in a bit more by inserting a copper tube bent upwards inside the breather but given the lack of headroom in the tank I thought it best to leave it at breather level.

I'm not sure if the Grand Cherokee ZJ was ever sold in Sweden, but this looks like the same fuel tank that the gasoline models use, and if that's the case, you can do this same vent hose mod on a ZJ tank and fit even more fuel in there! Might be able to top 100 Liters

Yeah we have the ZJ here. I use to to have one in 5.2 V8. Loved it but sold it to a mate who's doing it up. I noticed it had the same tank so the same thing could potentially be done as you say.

Interesting. The 97-2000 XJ has check valves in the hoses so dumping it out should not be possible. Dropped my tank this weekend for other reasons and was unable to pour out the 2 ish gallons I had left in the tank. Put my arm into the tank and you can feel the spring loaded check valves on both. I would imagine it maintains pressure in the tank. I would imagine this mod would cause an evap leak on a US XJ because I just fixed a hole in the top of my tank that was causing the truck to throw a code.

No EVAP leak, because the fuel system is still entirely sealed from the outside air.

@@Bodgemiester yes, its slightly larger in one dimension but it will bolt straight up. just make sure you have the right pump in. "WAEMID IV" on youtube did a video on this xj to zj tank upgrade

Next time you can unhook the fuel line, run a hose to a jug, and send 12v to the fuel pump to empty it before you remove it! Works great 🙂

There is no fuel pump in the tank on the diesel. Its a mechanic pump in the engine bay. Thanks for watching

Its not the real price. Probably double that but its like a business pump you get a card for that sells pure diesel instead of the 30 percent bio diesel from the regular pumps. You have to go online to check the price

What are some negative effects that this mod would do? Does it effect the evap system? Does it mess with anything else?

I don't think this will work for a gas XJ. I think it would have a high possibility of messing up the EVAP system and throwing check engine codes. I wish we had diesel XJ's in the US!

@@WorkshoptoWilderness technically it does run into a canister. But that is connected to intake vacuum through a purge valve and a few vacuum lines, so the fumes can be pulled into the intake and burned off to help with emissions. If too much fuel flows into the canister and gets in the lines it can plug up and mess with the EVAP system and make the vehicle run rough and hard to start after fueling, up as well as throw an engine light for emissions controll.

Sick, I have not see this before, now I want to check out that diesel heater vid! Any word on the fuel gauge? Will it just read F for the first 23L? Thanks!

From what I've been told it reads F for the first 20 odd liters then starts to read. Mine is just at total full at the moment. You also get an ODB error apparently if you plug something in and read but it goes away once you get into normal fuel levels. Thanks for watching Sean

I emptied my tank by disconnecting the fuel line and sticking it in a bucket. Next I jumped the fuel pump relay and it emptied it's self!

No idea, I think almost all XJs have around 72 litres or around 20 us gallons. Can you see anything visually strange about the tank when you look at it?
