Your exhaust system can say a lot about your CJ. Luckily they come with a nice growl with the factory set up and that is what I installed today. This is for a 79 CJ7 with the 258 engine, so only one tailpipe. It is from a preemissions era, but I installed the catalytic converter anyway. I highly recommend doing so and it doesn't really effect the performance.
Parts listed in this video:
Tailpipe: WALKER 43704
Muffler: WALKER KIT 18426
Exhaust Flange Gasket: OMIX 17450.02
Exhaust Pipe: Walker Exhaust 44872 Front Pipe
Exhaust Manifold Stud: Crown Automotive J4006547
Catalytic Converter: Eastern 70318 Catalytic Converter

Fixing what you can, when you can is the best way to go. Just make sure you do it right the first time. Make later fixes a lot easier. Not everybody should be as obsessed as I am. I know I'm going to burn out someday. :)

Cool Guy, thanks for all your help with CJ7 restoration. I have a 1979 NT that I'm working on now. Question on your video. If I have headers and need to run dual pipes, would I just replicate the exact setup in your video on both sides or would there be a more appropriate way to go about this? Thanks for all your video's, excellent work and always enjoyable to learn from.

I wish I had a good answer for you. I haven’t worked on a V8 setup before, but I would think that you would probably run them to one pipe that comes out the back on the driver side or run side exhaust pipes. People post about this all the time on the Jeep forums.

I’m not a big fan of flex pipe and never was but if you got the weld to stick without destroying it , good job 👍. I too believe an exhaust should be welded at its joints rather than rely on clamps to reduce leaks . The build is looking sweet . I eliminated the catalytic converter on my 1980 cj5 for one reason , I just didn’t want the excessive heat so close to the floor . Yes , there should be a heat shield ( zinc ) attached to the floor and the converter itself has a zinc shield on top but they still get very hot and I didn’t want the heat fatigue to contribute to the floor rusting due to fatigue . This is subject to speculation but we all know catalytic converters get hot . If that makes me an enviormental commie , well , I’m concerned for the preservation of my Jeep . My Jeep had no zinc shield and no brackets attached to the underside of the floor . I wasn’t interested in fabricating any at the moment . I needed it on the road before the first snow hit . It’s a luxury craft , not a daily driver but I’ll respect that it really should have a catalytic converter . Alright , next exhaust job I’ll get one on it . If I get nailed on an inspection , you know I’ll get on it . By the way , I wish the muffler straps were durable enough to last to make that hook into the chassis mount . I’m sure for as long as the muffler lasts , the bracket you welded on will too . That certainly a lot cheaper than wasting money on a bracket that won’t last as long as the muffler .

Most CJs don't have the heat shield anymore. Usually rusted off a long time ago. I do plan to fabricate a heat shield out of stainless steel. I just need to figure out what they looked like. The flex tube was the only option that I had at the moment. I'm always open to better ideas.

It’s Looking good ! Will the shocks being flipped around affect the performance or life of the shocks any? I’d wonder if they could get some water or sand or grime to settle inside them? I’m probably just over thinking ,I probably still got original shocks on my Cj5,I can tell it everytime I hit chug holes lol
@coolguy_CJ7
@coolguy_CJ7 3 года назад
Most shocks that are built today wouldnt have that problem. The gasket that goes around the piston is heavily sealed. As long as the piston stays rust free, it should be good. Flipping them doesn't hurt or alter the performance.

Cool Guy, big fan of your videos, have learned a lot as a new auto enthusiast. Recently bought an 81 258 CJ7 and looking to add a catalytic converter to reduce exhaust smell. Its possible it had one and the PO removed it, not sure. My question is where best to install one? I feel like I have seen pictures where they are installed above the skid plate, but doesnt look like enough room there. Regardless, you mentioned putting yours behind the skid plate to allow more heat dissipation. I am replacing my muffler as well, and putting the CC behind the skid plate, would require me to push the muffler back some which I can do with some additional effort I think, but wanted to confirm the thought there. And in front of the skid plate too hot for the drivers feet I'm guessing? Thanks!!!!

You are correct with your concerns. The way I set it up is exactly how they came from the factory. If you want to do custom, you can do whatever fits your bill, but if you want to keep it simple and manageable, then I would follow the path that I showed. Also, the catalytic converter used to come with a shield. That is something that you could build if you really wanted to, but isn't necessary.

Been loving all the videos. I recently got a 83 CJ7 and it needs some serious tlc. What mig welder do you recommend? I'm just a beginner if that matters
@coolguy_CJ7
@coolguy_CJ7 2 года назад
Sounds like every CJ7 that I’ve come across :) since you’re just starting out, a flux core welder is a good option. Simple set up and can weld most anything that you’re going to need on a CJ. And it’s very forgiving and portable. You don’t need a cO2 tank, a cart, or special tools. It’s not a very precise welder, but gets the job done. All of the body panels and tub are 18 gauge steel. The flux core will work great with that. If you plan to fabricate things or do modifications to the frame, a MIG welder is probably a better option. As far as brands go, I don’t have enough knowledge to steer you in a particular direction, but I did start out using the Harbor Freight flux core welder. That I can recommend.

Hello Cool Guy. All your videos are excellent... I've been watching for a while and they are very informative. I'm restoring my 1978 CJ7 Renegade Levi's Model. Currently working on my exhaust system. The pipe you talk about in this video that you described as a "bridge pipe" between the back side of the catalytic converter and the front-inlet side of the muffler... can you provide additional details about that pipe? What is the outside diameter? Where is a good source to find it? Did you have to modify it in any way for a tight fit? It looks like it fit on the inside perfectly. What you did there is exactly what I would like to do with mine. Any help you might offer with details on that pipe would be appreciated. Thanks in advance.
@coolguy_CJ7
@coolguy_CJ7 2 месяца назад
This was so long ago for me that I don’t recall the specifics. But what I can tell you is that pipe is a standard connector pipe that you can get at any AutoZone, oreillys, pep boys…etc. just measure the outlets of the muffler and catalytic converter before you go. The measurements are all standard.

@@coolguy_CJ7 Thanks Cool Guy. Appreciate your reply. Yes... I sure want to be mindful of the slight but (in my opinion) all important differences between inside and outside diameter of exhaust piping and outlets to join everything together. Seems like 2.5" OD and 2.25" OD are quite common and are what would a good choice for my 1978 CJ-7 Renegade. Thanks again!

Going the other way... could I delete my cat on a 84 CJ7 and install a piece of pipe with clamps or do I have to weld it in place (which I can't do). I don't have to pass emmissions any more.
@coolguy_CJ7
@coolguy_CJ7 2 года назад
Pipe with clamps will definitely work. The one thing I will say, the Cat removal isn’t going to help HP or fuel economy, but it will significantly increase the fumes that you will experience when sitting at a stop or going slowly through the woods.

@@coolguy_CJ7 Awesome, thanks for your response. Looking for a little more of a throaty rumble more than anything. Will I get that?
@coolguy_CJ7
@coolguy_CJ7 2 года назад
You will get that from the muffler. The Cat goes before the muffler and doesn’t effect the growl or sound or air flow for that matter. Think of how a modern Ford Mustang sounds. It has a big catalytic converter on it.

I have a 73 Commando with same engine, do you think you're configuration for exhaust will work?
@coolguy_CJ7
@coolguy_CJ7 3 года назад
It should. It will just depend on the angle of the exhaust pipe and where it would clear the skid plate for the transmission and where it exits the back of the Commando.

the muffler is upside down, if you flip it over the offset would be on passenger side giving clearance around shock and dont need flex pipe,im doing the same type of resto on my 83 cj 7 laredo
@coolguy_CJ7
@coolguy_CJ7 2 года назад
That’s something that I tried before I welded everything together. But the offset didn’t help and actually made the angle by the shock to severe to fit. But would love photos of how you did it. Dellis6914@gmail.Com

Hey Cool guy, that tail pipe is suppose to exit straight out the back of the CJ not the side, I have it on my CJ. I also believe the offset on you muffler is not correct.

Well, the service manual shows it this way. The factory rear muffler hanger has it this way. The dealership brochures show it this way. Every authentic CJ7 I’ve seen show it this way…

@@coolguy_CJ7 I didn’t make myself very clear, sorry. The tail pipe you have is for an early CJ-7, 1976-77 where the tail pipe exits straight out the back. Later CJ-7 had the side exit tail pipe and use the Walker #44784. I have a 76 and it exits straight out the back. I enjoy you videos.
