My Dad worked for a company that did financial modeling for DaimlerChrysler when they were putting this into production. Over a year before it went to market every forecast showed this vehicle would fail the market. It was expensive at the time but had a downmarket interior. Execs in Germany did not want to share the very sophisticated platform from ML suv with their counterparts in Detroit. That was a scaleable architecture that rode better and the machine tools already exited for it, but the Daimler people thought it would "cheapen" Mercedes. Meanwhile, Chrysler had already tooled-up the plant to manufacture it. 100’s of millions of development cost went into this, which the forecasts also showed the company would not recoup-and they didn’t. All these details just add color to all the things you mentioned in your video about the size and so forth.

Awesome comment thanks for the extra information. Always interesting to hear more about what goes on behind the scenes. I know mercedes was always keeping what they had away from Chrysler and almost letting them fend for themselves, definitely not the most successful merger in that aspect.

@Ohad Paran, were I you, I would get a Jeep Commander, add in a Hellcat, Hellcat Demon, or Hellephant crate engine kit, make it completely luxury on the inside, as well as the outside, make its performance top notch with all of the best parts in the world, and make it look awesome.
@itsbigal92

The problem with the Daimler Chrysler tie up was that Daimler wouldn't share enough resources with Chrysler and Chrysler didn't do enough to make them share their stuff.
@ohadparan2853
@ohadparan2853 4 года назад
@@itsbigal92 Absolutely and that percolated throughout the entire organization. Like I mentioned, from really big things like vehicle architectures, powertrains, and machine-tools, and all the way to QC procedures, lean manufacturing methodologies, supply-chain optimization, budget forecasting, and even marketing practices. Had there been the real synergy that Dieter Zeutche sold to the Chrysler execs during negotiations, things might look a lot different today.

I had a 2006 Hemi and the granny failed/burned up in two years. Diagnosis? They said the Benz tranny could not hold up to the Hemi engine. Once they rebuilt it, under warranty, it has been solid for the last 12 years.

In my opinion, the Commander's design has aged extremely well. It still looks fresh 18 years later. This era of Jeep/Dodge/Chrysler had some of my favorite designs of all time. Nearly everything was an instant classic.

A year ago I was given my brother’s 2008 Commander that he had owned for 12 years. It was kind of a family car as we all used it since he had multiple. It’s the car I learned to drive in 8 years ago and the car I always wanted. It has almost 200,000 miles and still runs great. He took great care of it over the years. I feel incredibly safe driving it despite how big it is. It definitely has its quirks and wear and tear, but over all it is still in good condition all these years later. We as a family have gotten so much great use out of it for the little amount of work we’ve had to put into it over the years. I can’t tell you how many times people have told I should get rid of it because of how much gas it takes, but I refuse. I love it dearly.

I Fetchin love the Commander and use it for off road! Anyone actually use it for four wheeling? The technology invested in the drive system is insane and combined with the 5.7 Hemi power, this is a beast that is super capable in our Colorado Mountains and towing with the long wheelbase is a dream. We've had a lot of JEEP and this is a Utilitarian ready vehicle if you want to actually use it for that. LONG LIVE THE SQUARE BODIES!!

My 2007 jeep commander is down right now and you can't even buy the parts to fix it now. My front driveshaft broke the bolts off that bolt it to the front differential. When the bolts broke it destroyed the 3 little brackets that hold the front cv joint to the front differential. I called mopar trying to find the bolts and brackets and they told me they no longer make my parts and can't even make replacements for me so I have a $10 yard ornament now that I'm still paying for. I've driven the jeep a wapping 900 miles since I bought it a year ago and haven't been able to drive it since last summer. I'm now waiting for someone to part one out because salvage yards won't even sell them. I was also told by a couple different salvage yards almost every commander that's not wrecked with the 4.7 v8 that comes in ha ssd's the exact same problem. The problem is the bolts are to small to take the torque pulling the vehicle down the road for long periods of time since there basically front wheel drive. Without the front driveshaft in you can't drive it.

I love my Commander. I'm a single guy with no kids, so the tiny 3rd row is always folded down. If I fold down the 2nd row of seats as well, I (6ft tall) can comfortably sleep in the back of it on overnight fishing/camping trips. The offroad worthiness is surprisingly good as well, if you pay attention to approach and departure angles. The HEMI is a must though... she's a big girl. The Grand Cherokee and Commanders of the same year are essentially the same vehicle, but chose the Commander entirely for the body style preference. The extra room was just an added bonus.

I bought a secondhand '08 Commander base model (3.6L-V6, Quad I, awd, Dark Taupe color) when he had about 86K miles on it and have loved it ever since. It's now 186K miles and on it's second transmission and second engine and will probably be my last vehicle, especially at today's '23 prices. Cheaper to fix than to buy, right? Had to replace the driver's inside door handle twice due to cheap plastic, the struts in the rear popup window once, the strut holding up the hood once, but I love the boxiness of it, love the color, and being still in great shape, I notice it still turns heads! I've always treated it more as a people-mover, especially when we visit the kids and now grandkids. Love the fact that with the 2 rows of seats down it'll hold a huge amount of stuff on trips and since I'm tall, it has always been more comfy to drive it on long trips rather than my wife's Honda (old and new). These days I've wondered what the cost would be to really convert it to a rock-crawler, but with that new engine only having about 13K miles on it, I probably won't bother. I've read the hemi is the more worthwhile engine to have for that and it's the first thing I'd feel a need to replace in mine to go that route, amongst other things. It'll make someone a great overlander some day, though! I've seen some conversions that still make me think about it now and then! Love this vehicle!

My cousin traded a loaded Blazer for a Commander and still drives it! To her, it's the greatest vehicle Chrysler ever made. There is something quintessentially Jeep about the Commander. I love the way the vehicle looks, but like most buyers, found it too small, cramped, inefficient, and expensive to stomach. BTW, loved the adjusted for inflation prices! Makes it much easier to see where the vehicle would really fall in today's market.

OK here we are 16 months later. We are on our second Commander (we actually love the unique design) The first one was damaged in a freak accident. We traded that one and within 6 months regretted it. Our current one is a Limited with the 4.7 V8. It's quirky and runs well when it wants to (I'm pretty much the same way) I've thought about trading it in on something less dramatic but the only SUV on the market that resembles the Commander is the Mercedes G Class. There is no way I can spend a 130 grand fixing the Commander so we'll keep it.

I had an 06 and absolutely loved it. Mine had the 4.7L V8 and it was by far the best thing I've ever driven in snow. It was a perfect balance of power, weight, and AWD system. Sadly right around 100,000 miles it started to go through coolant and no one could figure out why or where it was going. Despite its flaws (door handles were flimsy and easy to break, the opening into the cargo area was restrictive - I could fit bigger things in my wife's 98 CR-V - and of course the gas-mileage sucked) I was sad to get rid of it.

Cold air intake & glass packs 🦄. I still have it going strong I've yet to find anything I like better that has it's potential. The third row is true though but I didn't want anything that big in the first place. I've had this longer than any other vehicle but I like keeping an eye out. Still nothing. When I looked to buy my 2010 Jeep Commander Limited 5.7 Hemi every used Commander I saw had 150,000 miles on it and they were all one owner vehicles. Everyone i spoke to loved their Commander. I found one with 68,000 miles, I put a 4 inch Superlift on it, 33' tires and other stuff and it is UNSTOPPABLE! I have been to every dessert and to the top of every mountain in SoCal and my Commander hasn't EVER had a tow strap put on it except to pull other Jeeps outta trouble. The combination of the Hemi and Quadra drive II make it a BEAST. When in LOW the transfer case locks up and the front and rear diffs have AUTOMATIC LOCKERS! My friends were all sceptical but they have all seen the lockers in action and now the Commander is regarded as one of the most capable Jeeps in our group. I bought it because it is WAY larger than a Cherokee, I'm 6'3 and get in and out with ease. I cant fit easily in a JK or God forbid a Cherokee. The Jeep Commander ROCKS and the Italian big boss of Chrysler doesnt know what the fuck he's talking about. They should re-launch a refreshed version and call it the Commander or the Grand Wagoneer.

I have a 2009 Commander Sport. I have to agree with everything you said. At the time, I bought the Commander because I was a longtime Jeep owner, and because I needed a vehicle that would fit three carseats. The Commander allowed two large carseats and and an infant carrier carseat in the middle row because the middle row seats recline allowing you to fit the big "clam shell" car seats under the seat head rests that did not go up and down. I still have my Commander and love it despite all of the flaws you detailed in the video. The mileage is low for an 11 year old vehicle (108,000) and I have had no major repairs.

Now granted they were expensive back then. But look now in to 2021 the jeep commander has been out of the market for ten years! These cars that could easily be sold for 40,000 dollars are now being sold as cheap and 3,500 isn’t that crazy! The vehicle is a tank and looks great. I put 20 inch Jeep Gladiator wheels on mine and nice tires. The next week or so I am raptor lining the whole vehicle black and undercoating the vehicle top to bottom. I upgraded the fog lights and will tint the windows and tail lights. Had it for 11 years until someone hit me and totaled it. I have been looking for the last two years for a replacement. Just found and bought a 2010 Sport, 4wd, 5.7 with only 49,000 miles. Again its perfect for me. I don't like all the hard plastic but it is durable. I'm 6'3" and have lots of head room. Back seat is not passenger friendly but most of the time its two people max. I had no idea the sales were so dismal. Glad I found the one that I did and will keep it for a long time.

Bought my 2008 5.7 Hemi Overland new in 2008. It now has 220k miles on it. It's been the most reliable vehicle I have ever owned, and I have owned a lot. It runs just like when I bought it, but is starting to use some oil. What a great vehicle. I hope they make another one like it. It worked great for my family as I have 4 kids and the two little ones sat in the back.

I owned the 06 4x4 Commander with the 4.7. It was a good vehicle and was reliable...BUT...It wasn't a Wrangler. I traded it in for a 16' JKU and even with 35" tires I am still getting better fuel economy than I did with the Commander. I NEVER used the 3rd row seating as it just killed storage capacity. Happier with the Wrangler :) Great video

I remember around 2008 my neighbor got a Jeep Commander. They had a Lexus GX but traded it in for the Commander and even as a kid I always thought that was an interesting decision going from a Lexus to a Jeep though they seemed to enjoy the vehicle. It always did look like a box to me

I have a 2006 Jeep Commander and I love driving it. Only complaint I have is the gas millage which when I got it it was 13.5 mpg now is down to 12.5 mpg. I do not use the back seats as they stay folded down so I have more room for storage. I have made some repairs this year but vehicle still runs smoothly and I am happy with it.

I've owned a 2007 Commander limited 5.7L for 10 years. It's been the biggest headache with dumb things breaking like the starter breaking 4 times, water pump breaking, alternative going, 3 thermostats, transmissions solenoid pack breaking. The last straw to buying a new car was the cam position sensor going out. Luckily I can and have fixed all these issues myself, but I'm constantly thinking what's going to break next. That being said, I don't want to sell it even though I just bought a new Wrangler 4xe.

I had a 07 v6 and other than no low range and lack of power i really liked it. I feel like if they had put the new 3.6 in it and maybe updated it a little it would have been more successful.

I had one. We loved it! The 3.7 engine is complete junk but the vehicle is great. Looks ten times better than the WK. great room up front. And anyone buying a 3 row vehicle isn’t carrying 6 adult friends around. They get it for the kids. There’s great aftermarket parts available for the XK. It’s a beast off-road with the QDII. I took mine places wranglers chickened out of. It’s only limited by its size. My XJ is easier to maneuver but XK is no less capable.

I have a 2006 Jeep Commander - 5.7 Hemi - Limited. I've had it for 12yrs and put around 50k miles on it. I've had some issues here and there, but overall it's still going strong. I'm considering a new family SUV so we can keep her for fun only. It's such a hard decision. I will never get rid of it.

I was handed down a 2006 Jeep Commander Limited 5,7-liter Hemmi in 2010 with 21,000 miles and absolutely loved the unique square design. Here we are now, 2022 and well over 118 ,000 with very little issues like an interior water dripping after a major rain around the sunroof. I have many compliments on how well it looks and how well it drives. I personally think the design is considerably better than the Jeep Cherokee.

I have a 2006 all-time 4x4 with the 4.7. I bought it used for my son 5 years ago with 65k miles. We've replaced rear axle hubs, engine and transmission computer modules, all brakes (rear twice), control arm bushings, transfer case, alternator, AC system, water pump, radiator, inside door handles, window motors, steering rack$$$, front drive shaft (CV joint), radio. It only has 120k miles now. Now the exhaust header bolts are breaking and causing exhaust leaks. It was a fun little Jeep running around town, but I should have bought a Honda or Toyota. I figure I'm about $23k in this junker. Trade-in value is $1200.

We owned a 2008 Limited model for a couple of years. Owned two Cherokees prior, so we loved the look of it. Quiet, comfortable ride. Lots of power (5.7L 4X4). Lousy fuel economy. Amazing Boston Acoustic sound system. Had a few electrical gremlins. Not a huge amount of cargo space with the seats folded down. Started developing mechanical issues around 95K miles. Decided that it wouldn’t be suitable for overlanding, so we traded it in for a Toyota FJ Cruiser. I miss the Commander, but I wouldn’t go back.

Jeep Commander was ahead of it time . When you think about it Jeep Commander was Jeep first row passenger by Jeep and it's was good option for families who don't want minivan and the Jeep Commander it was an excellent cross over SUV and the original Chrysler Pacifica SUV 2004-2009 and now and the return of the Jeep Cherokee Grand wagoneer 3 row passenger and I hope they make a bigger version of the Dodge Durango it would help FCA gain more customers

I'm in my 70's and have owned more vehicles than I can count. I currently own 5. My 07 Commander is the best vehicle I have ever owned. It have had way too many 2x4's and other lumber in it so it also has served as a truck of sorts. The 6 cylinder pulls my 22' pontoon with no problem even on very steep ramps.

I love my Commander. '08 101k miles, third row seat is a fantastic option and the only reason I bought it (aside from 4x4 and roof rack). I am not a Jeep person so had no interest in the Cherokee, Wrangler, Liberty or any of the rest. This guy looks almost like a Land Rover which appeals to me. Only two extra inches? I'm generally happy with a couple of extra inches!

And one more thing , As I was reading the comment right after mine from Mr Paran . No joke ! when I did take a notice to this vehicle recently ( even though I never knew what they looked like inside , my thinking was if this had an upscale interior it may have been more successful ... and considering it’s price point it it SHOULD HAVE BEEN a better interior. By the way I was with Daimler/ Chrysler at that time and remember how they really weren’t sharing there technology ( but they SURE GRABBED OR 12B I’m still there and they are long gone THANK GOODNESS

Roof leaks. Not sure if its the rack or the sunroof but it's a pain in the ass. Havin g that said, I really like driving it. It's pretty comfy if you're not in the back or behind me. I'm 6'4" and there's little room behind me for anyone. Gas mileage sucks, literally. Has some good get up and powers on. Just hoping she hangs on for me for a good run. I usually go Grand Cherokee but this was my first dealer purchase and they didn't have a Cherokee I could afford so thus began my relationship with my new ride. 3 years, So far so good.

I own one myself and one reason i belive people stop buying them was because it has a lot of blind spots and hard visibility. At times because of such bad visibility i almost had several accidents. But other than that in my opinion is a fun suv it shares platform with the wk so parts from the WK SRT can be fitted you can make it into a sporty surprice vehicle. Not that fast but fun.
