Great job on what I consider to be an overly complicated set up and service procedure. You are very methodical in your approach and have a lot of cool tools. I have a 2015 Chrysler 300C with the hemi engine, currently 34000 miles. Given the condition of the fluid you replaced I feel confident that my car could go that long without need for service. Thanks for being so thorough and providing good advice and commentary.
Thanks Joe, This was a pleasure to watch and very informative. I have a 2013 Ram that I think has the same transmission, it says on mine 8HP45. Mine is stuck in 4th gear and only has 37K miles on it.
Hi Joe, out of all the videos I've seen, this is the best because you make it simple and it works. I just have one question, in the final part of the procedure, did you go for a ride in the Jeep? Or did you shift gears with the brakes pressed while in the parking lot? And how should I make sure the jeep is in a good position to be able to put all the necessary oil into the transmission? thank you!!!!
Great video. I changed the fluid and filter on my 2015 Grand Cherokee last week. Ordered the Mopar filter and all was going well until one of the pan bolts broke (in the corner - under the cross member). Tried to remove the bold using a bit of heat (propane torch) but was concerned about using an open flame. Put it back together with the old bolts (minus one) and so far-so good on the leaks. I'll check the fluid level when I change oil next month. Thanks for all your help with the videos.
Would be nice to see how much old fluid went out vs the filled up amount, so you definitely know it's not been under/over filled whilst doing this trans fluid partial change op.
but why? It's irrelevant in a way. He literally followed the same procedure a technician would do. What if original fluid level was a little low and you went based off that?
I find it really irritating that it's so difficult to find out which specific transmission is in my jeep. The owners manual doesnt say anything about the trans other than it takes Mopar atf+4 or equivalent. And the Haynes manual I have says all the transmissions that are in all jeeps in a given set of years models... But doesn't say which trans goes in which years or submodels... Idk if anyone knows but I'm still looking. I drive a 2013 grand cherokee 5.7L laredo 4wd. if you know pls share.. I don't know much about transmissions.
For anyone doing this you want to put a level on the transmission both ways. When filling disable the traction control. Hold brake a have in drive park and reverse neutral for 5 seconds. Then get have temp at correct range go to second gear and idle to 2000km
The best video for swapping the fluid and pan/filter for the Jeep GC 845 RE transmission. What's the Mopar part numbers for the pan filter, gasket, screws, and fluid? Thanks.
Thanks for the complement! The part number for the kit that includes the pan, filter, gasket and pan bolts is: 68233701AA. Please note that the kit for other vehicles, or different variations of this same vehicle, may be different. The part number for the transmission fluid is 68218925AB. I believe this is the same part number for ALL Mopar 8 and 9 speed automatics.
Hey Joe great video but..........Im a bit skeptical abut the level check at tranny temperature procedure. Don't you have to set the tranny on drive, rev up to certain rpms and hold it at second gear for about 5 seconds? That being said don't you have to raise the rear tires to do this?
Thank you! Honestly I'm a bit skeptical of the true importance of that fluid check procedure in the service manual. I spoke to a transmission expert that confirmed my suspicion that as long as you get the fluid level reasonably close you'll be fine you just want to avoid drawing air up into the pump and you also want to avoid fluid aeration caused by contact with moving parts. That said the vehicle has been a daily driver since this video was shot and we've had zero problems
@@JoesGarageProductionsLLC hmmm interesting. Well that being said I’ll just follow along your video hoping to get your exact same results. Thanks bud!!!
Did this today on my 2014 Durango 3.6 awd. Only got about 4 qt back in. Should have measured what I took out but did not. Its hot here so, will have to let it cool overnight and re-check in morning. Durango is very much same as the Jeep. Most seem to bet getting 4.5-5qt in. Any thoughts? Did you level the car or level the trans?
He leveled the car, I have a GC and I pulled out 5.5 and am at 4.2 right now. I'm going to let it cool overnight and run the process and procedure tomorrow and see.
Just did this job today, It was a royal PITA since I did not have any hex wrenches available. Propped up the T-Case a few inches to gain more access. I went with Redline D6 for the fluid (it's red but the vehicle is out of warranty already) & supposed to be a superior fluid to the ZF/Mopar stuff as well as cheaper. D6 is popular in the Trackhawk/SRT8 scene. Great video! The pan I used to replace it does not have a drain plug for some reason? It's a Mopar part direct from the dealer so I guess that's a new thing. Perhaps trying to curb people from working on their vehicles even more I bet. I went ahead and installed new hardware as well + a new drain plug.
Thanks for the complement! Let me know how the Redline D6 fluid works out for you. Odd they would remove the drain plug, but I guess every penny counts.
There's one sitting in my driveway so I should be able to accommodate that request :) It looks WAAAY easier on the RAM though. The last time I was under there, the front and rear pan rails didn't seem to be blocked like they did on the Jeep.
How much fluid can you expect to drain out? The entire system takes 9 qtrs. but if your just doing the pan I would expect you will only get about 4 maybe 5 qtrs.
The new pan/filter combo being sold by Mopar no longer has a drain plug in it; Mopar also stopped providing new bolts as part of the new pan/filer combo.
Wow that will make this job really messy if they got rid of the drain on it . Why make it easy for people who want to get maximum life out of their tranny .
This is so helpful! I am a bit confused that i haven’t had the chance to change mine , my GC 2015 is 100 K miles , do you recommend to go and change it ? Appreciate your advice 🙏🏼
I don't think it's a bad idea. It all depends on whether or not you trust Chrysler or the company that designed that transmission originally. The design is based off of the ZF 8HP, and if I recall correctly ZF wants you to change the fluid at approximately 60,000 miles. Chrysler says it's still for life under normal conditions
That' was good video my big question is.is that the same tranny as in my 2013 Chrysler 300 with the v6 8 speed mine has got 68'k on it I bought it from my naibors who were in a retirement home and really never drove it so I am just queries thank you
Great video. Would it be the exact same procedure if it's a 4x4? Would it be harder? I want to do it myself to save money but also because it's hard to find a shop you can trust and do it right or even do it at all and still take my money. Problem is I. Afraid to do it , fearing I'd do it wrong.
That's probably going to be more difficult on a 4x4. You going to have the front axle and drive shaft to deal with so things are going to be even tighter than a two-wheel drive vehicle. It can be done though. There are a couple videos on RU-vid showing the procedure for a 4x4
I believe I pulled the procedure from alldatadiy.com. A transmission rebuilder friend of mine said this transmission is not as sensitive about fluid level as some would suggest. As long as you're pretty close, you'll be fine.
@@Forged407 Unfortunately, they are copyrighted material that are provided as part of an AllDataDIY subscription. Thankfully, they are very affordable - I think AllData frequently has promos out there for $9.95/vehicle/year. I typically buy them only when I need them.
Check to see if Sonnax sells them. They are a very well-respected brand in the trans industry. If you get stuck, check ru-vid.com. He is a personal friend of mine and extremely knowledgeable!
How much you think it will cost if I take it to a lube place or transmission service place to do all that procedure? Would you trust them to do a good job like this ? Thanks
I would not trust a run-of-the-mill lube shop to do this kind of work. This transmission requires a fairly specialized fluid that I doubt most shops would keep in stock. That's a very generalized statement though. I'm sure there are exceptions to that rule. Judging by the cost of just the materials, this will likely be over $1,000 at a dealer but I can't say for sure as I have never paid a dealer to do this.
Good video. Love my Jeep but hate the 8 speed and the shifting of the auto. 2021 wrangler. Jeep says it’ll do exactly what I described. Either way I love the Jeep overall.
Interesting - most folks love the 8 speed, yours truly included. What about the shifting don't you like? I ask because there were numerous software updates to address driveability concerns
Great video and very informative thankyou! Do you have a copy or a link to the fluid replacement procedure? Looks like you had three pages. Any help is appreciated)))
Thanks for the compliment! I believe the procedure I used was from alldatadiy.com. they sell you vehicle subscriptions by the year and they are very cost-effective if you do your own automotive work.
There is some kind of bug in Amazon. When I look at my order history, it pulls up "TEKTON Star Key Wrench Set, 9-Piece (T10-T50) | 25291", but when I try to click on that or search for it, all that comes up is a similar hex/allen key set, which won't work. Something like this might do it, but I have not used them personally: amzn.to/47IuLjr
I have heard that they are interchangeable, but don't know for sure. I suspect that Mopar buys the fluid from ZF, who probably paid an oil company to make a custom formulation. Everyone in that supply chain is probably taking a cut!
Really? Is that new? Regardless, I believe Maxlife is red in color. God forbid if I ever needed to make a transmission warranty claim, I am sure they would deny it if they saw red fluid - or, at the very least, I'd have more work to do to convince them it is an approved fluid. Technically, while ZF designed this transmission and licensed the design to Chrysler, the transmission was modified by Chrysler and Chrysler makes the 845RE. The 8HP80, on the other hand, I believe is purchased from ZF as-is. At least, it was as of a few years ago.
That would probably work... I was a little hesitant here for two reasons: 1. I had no idea how clean/dirty the filters and magnets were, so this was investigative as well. 2. I wasn't sure if/how well the plastic drain plug would seal. It seemed pretty sturdy.
Very nice. I plan on tackling this on my 2014 this weekend. Would you kindly email me the procedures you have printed out? If you can reply here and I’ll send my email. Thank you!
My apologies. I just checked and it is copyrighted material. I can't redistribute it but you can buy it very inexpensively at alldatadiy.com. I believe an annual subscription is about $15 per vehicle per year. You can often find coupon codes that get you the same thing for $10 a year. Look at it this way if you spend the money and do this job yourself, it paid for itself 100 times over. Sorry I couldn't be more helpful
@@JoesGarageProductionsLLC not a problem! I ended up locating a link to a Dropbox file that had the whole manual! I downloaded and am good to go. I did the fluid and filter change this morning and it went really well. No issues with bolt access and took about 5.5 quarts
It is pricey stuff... There might be aftermarket fluid available by now. I hear that the factory fill is really ZF Lifeguard 8, which is a little bit cheaper than the Mopar stuff I think.
You can do a fluid and filter change yourself 4 time and you won't be to the half way cost of that transmission. Do things cheap and they come back to haunt you
Sounds like a sorry ass technician dude that works at a stealership and took notes from the video.. then went on to criticize him so others will resort to taking theirs to the stealership lmao
