They have been great for our two shops they will ask you what code you are getting and will determine if they can actually fix it or they will tell you up front if they are not sure until they open it up usually a one day turn around for us but our two shops are in Massachusetts.

I have a 98 Jeep Grand Cherokee 6 cyl. After a mechanic broke a wheel speed sensor, the ABS dash light came on and the brakes acted funny. They replaced the sensor twice and the third time the ABS light came on, they said the ABS Module was bad and they wanted over $1000 to replace it. I bought a rebuilt one from an ebay seller for $80 and it worked perfectly. I watched a few RU-vid videos showing the repairs to the module and since I was a retired electronics technician, I opened the defective module and repaired it in under 30 minutes. Bad solder connections were the only problem. The hardest part was opening the sealed module and then resealing it.

yeah, my 2000 chevy Silverado was close to $1000 15 years ago. ABS light came on while on a trip to Southern California in the desert. Took it to a dealer and wasn't sure if they were taking advantage of an out of stater but after some checking it was what they cost back then.

Previous owner of a 2000MY, 210'000 mile WJ Grand Cherokee Overland with the 4.0 straight six. Great car, really comfy, built like a tank, but with a pretty poor interior quality, (it was the Wifes car) Whilst I was working away, she traded it in for a one owner, 90'000 mile 2006 WK Grand Cherokee Overland 3.0CRD with full main dealer service history. What an absolute stinking heap of shit it was. The paint looked like Stevie Wonder had painted it. All WK's that I've seen in any other colour besides silver have awful paint. It rusted worse than a 1970's British Leyland product. The 3.0CRD diesel returned worse fuel mileage than her old 4.0 petrol and was dangerously underpowered. The engines are supposed to be 217bhp, but I'd be surprised if they are even 150bhp. The auto box was clunky and slow witted. The ride quality was the worst of any car I have ever driven, (and I've personally owned over 40 cars in my life). It was like it was over-dampered and under-sprung, with a harsh, crashy but also wallowy ride. Whoever signed off on that ride quality needs taking outside and beating to death. It was plagued with constant electrical problems. The dashboard thought every day was Christmas with the amounts of lights that would flash on and off seemingly at random, and often different one day to the next. Jeep under Chrysler were really well built. Jeep under Mercedes were absolute heaps of shit. I should have known how bad it would be having previously owned a Mercedes CLK back in the early 2000's. That was a heap of shit also.

@frazerguest2864

Surely the quality of the product has improved infinitely now Jeep are no longer Mercedes owned ? That probably says more about Mercedes quality than it does about Fiat quality.

@gillesthibault429 5 лет назад
Quality is at an all-time low with Fiat. Not one single even-semi-smooth model launch since they took over. None of them have been on-schedule, mostly because of quality issues (their specs are just that lousy)

Gilles Thibault : How on earth could the vehicles have been any worse quality-wise than they were under Mercedes ?
@gillesthibault429
@gillesthibault429 5 лет назад
@@frazerguest2864 Guess why FCA still makes the DS Ram? Why has the Grand Caravan just been discontinued, instead of the Spring 2017 as it was supposed to? Quality problems. Every new model launch under Fiat is more of a s..t show than the previous. No wonder their customer satisfaction, and reliability ratings are in the basement!
@frazerguest2864
@frazerguest2864 5 лет назад
Gilles Thibault : The thing is, you kind of expect such woeful quality with FIAT, (Fix It Again Tomorrow), it’s the shit quality under Mercedes ownership that pisses me off the most. In the small town that I live in is a guy driving round in a 1989 Mercedes 190. Besides the faded paint and worn drivers seat, the car is like brand new. Still runs super smooth and has zero rust. I also see a 2007 Mercedes S-Class S500 driving around locally. Besides the bumpers, ever single panel is riddled with rust, as are most Mercedes around here approaching ten years old. That in itself is just one perfect example of Mercedes so-called ‘quality’. I’ll tell you what, I don’t see Fiats and Alfa Romeos rusting as badly as Mercedes. All manufacturers seem to be following the same path, (with the exception of Toyota). Accountants have taken over from Engineers. Cars are built to the absolute cheapest price. If a car manufacturer can sacrifice quality to save 1 cent per unit, then they will do. Cars used to be the second highest purchase a family would make, which is why most folk used to own a car for ten years before selling it on, (or scrapping it). Now with the advent of cheap finance / lease deals, cars have become a throwaway consumable item, built to last the duration of the warranty and not a day longer, (and sometimes not even the duration of the warranty, which often isn’t worth the paper it is written on). But such is the way a lot of our consumer driven society works. Just look at Apple products. Clever marketing aimed at the hard of thinking = sky high prices, yet the products are utter dog shit, often not fit for purpose and you’re lucky if they last two years before becoming nothing more than an expensive paperweight. I went into an engineering workshop a few weeks back. They had a lathe and a pillar drill in use that the firm had bought in the 1950’s. These pieces of equipment had been used every working day for nearly 70 years and were still going strong. I bet the same wouldn’t be possible if you bought new engineering equipment today. It would be scrap mental after ten years. Volvo Trucks is another great example. They used to be real tough workhorses. Now gearboxes and turbochargers costing several thousand pounds each are consumable service items.

I assume disconnecting the battery is standard procedure before doing the swap.

The scope is such a beautiful tool for these types of diags. I got my MicSig (just a starter for now; it's what I could afford!) about six months ago and in no small thanks to you I'm leaning a lot more of how to use it. Found a blower motor that would intermittently speed up when hitting bumps in a Cheevy with only 34k miles. Without the amp clamp to catch the power spike and the psm signal being measured to prove it was internal to the motor not the control module it would have taken a lot of work to try and find a short or some other issue. With the scope I had proof and it did solve the problem and proved the new one no longer spiked. Not only was it easy but ensures warranty pays and we don't get a charge back! Same with a cam actuator solenoid. Signal is good and solenoid it outside the range. No circuit tests needed. The digital visual proof that comm is there while the malfunction is there eliminates a tedious GM procedure on testing the part and circuits. What i'm trying to say is thanks for being a great teacher and skilled mentor big guy!

@@ronaldkleinsasser2842 Not sure. He's got a lot of options. I think it depends on the difficulty of the diag. For a simple speed sensor its easy to pull out the miniature one, but the pico is probably still king.

Does anybody know if any testing of the ABS module can be done on its pins with a multimeter? Or would the ohm settings voltage in some way do damage to the module? I also wonder if the same codes could be coming from FCM, or PCM? Blessings.

Just a thought. Wouldn't it be interesting if when ever you did a segment on a particular brand of vehicle you also wore a hat with that brand name, such as a Chevy hat for a Chevy, Ford for a Ford and so on. All just for play that is.

I'm curious too say, u made the call on the abs mod, question is would you still comdem abs mod if it was showing erratic voltages on the network when plugged in? In the vid You would think the mod its fine since it didn't do that or drop the network. Love the content by the way

lol, maybe they spliced the front wheel speed sensors together to fool the thing and not replace one or some chinesium alarm/immobilizer/logging or vehicle motion pickup? nothing surprises me anymore at finding stupendous things

Is there a way to diagnose if CAN signals are working if you don't have a scope like that? Any way to do it with a DVOM or test light ?

I'm guessing "Part 1 final" means she decided to drive without ABS, the cost is too high for an old vehicle. On a day to day basis, the only thing one would notice is the annoying dash light.

many times the can bus runs "through" the abs module and doesnt stop in them as a dead end, so it unplugged could break communications with many modules. even if it is the canbus termination endpoint, it unplugged means no termination resistors and same non communication or very noisy bus issues of random whack-a-mole com failures
@bertgrau9246
@bertgrau9246 5 лет назад
@@throttlebottle5906 Ok, I think if it was just unplugged, it would cause more problems than if left as was. I hate when any warning lights come on though. Its even more aggravating when you take a.
