Thanks, Cody! I could never find a backing plate to be able to finish the job. Mine is missing a critical part.

Hi Tom -I'm enjoying your common sense videos on your CJ. They're helping me do the same on my '57 CJ-5. One comment on this video: On my '57 model, the nut holding the eBrake drum on is a 1", not an 11-16". Might just be a change in the years. Anyway, all is good! Thanks!

Hi Jim, thanks for your input on the nut size. These old Jeeps are fun to work on for the most part. After having the engine rebuilt on mine I'm still breaking it in. Good luck with your project. By the way I never did get my emergency brake operating. I need a new backing plate which I am unable to find.

Your videos are very simple and helpful Tom. I just bought an ol 55 cj5 and got running again the past few days. Already watched a few of your videos for reference. I was reading Mr. Stephens comment below and I might look more into what he was saying as well. Thanks

Max has had several Jeeps over the years, so he has some good ideas. An update for you on my emergency brake repair. My backing plate is missing a part and I can't find any used ones for sale. So, no E brake for me at the present moment. Thanks for the comment!

Does the case need to be drained because those backing plate bolts pass thru into the oil cavity?
@TomandJulieMineExploring
@TomandJulieMineExploring 2 года назад
Yes. I drained the T case because when I started to remove the drum the shaft seal started to leak.

yup definitely have some clean up work ahead... too bad some things can't remain technologically simple hey.

It is a simple system and I'm curious about it's holding power. I don't know what this Jeep has been through to get so much gunk and plant material all over. Thanks for the comment, Jon.

Tom! Don't buy any parts to fix that old drum brake! They never worked worth a damn! Buy yourself a set of rear brakes from an old jeep pick up or waggon. These are 11" brakes and will do a hell of a lot better job stopping you and they are set up as parking brakes as well. You will have to custom make a parking brake cable but it's an easy deal! This is a much better way to . Leave off the backing plate and knock the drum off the drive flange and install it without all that crap that doesn't work! Have fun! You should change the front brakes out to 11" as well when you get around to it, you'll be amazed at the difference! Good luck! You can tow that rig up to my shop and I'll give you a hand!

Hey Max, thanks for the advice. I figured that these didn't work very well. I will look for some 11" brakes to use. You should be careful about having me up to your place to work on this, I might take you up on it. Hope the mine is keeping ypu busy.

Hi Tom thanks for the great video! I'm wondering if you made the part 2? I can't find it if you did. And, I'm sorry I think I posted this comment on the wrong video earlier... whoops.

No worries on the mix up on the post. I never did make part two. The reason for that is my backing plate is missing a part on it. I don't know exactly what the part is called, but it's a bracket that is riveted to the backing plate and holds one end of the shoes down. I looked high and low but couldn't find either the part or the whole backing plate. I know they are out there somewhere, I just gave up looking. So my E brake still isn't working. Thanks for the comment, Brad!

Thank you for your help, i just a 1955 cj5 and i am cleaning under the body. I took the e brake apart today and when i put it back together 6:16 one of the nuts wasn't re connecting the Drum to the Flange because one of the nut stabilizers was stripped in the hub. I might just tac weld the nut to he hub, any advice?
@TomandJulieMineExploring
@TomandJulieMineExploring 4 года назад
To be honest I can't recall if that was a regular bolt or a flat head stud pressed into the flange. I suppose you could lightly tack weld it. It would be better to replace whatever is stripped if you can.
@chris707man

Mine Exploration and Hiking with Tom and Julie that would be the drum, $65+

@@chris707man The drum and the flange are separate pieces.
@chris707man
@chris707man 4 года назад
@@TomandJulieMineExploring yeah, the drum is stripped and isn't holding the bolt when i try to tighten the flange and drum to the shaft.
@TomandJulieMineExploring
@TomandJulieMineExploring 4 года назад
@@chris707man I must be thinking of it wrong. I thought there are regular bolts going through the drum and flange with nuts on the other end. I'll look at it tomorrow.
