Jeep JL Wrangler Rock Sliders - EVO Bomber Rocker Guards with Body Armor Skins Installation

While there was once a time when Cindy and I were a big fan of body mounted rock sliders or rocker guards, that was a very long time ago and well before there was a JK Wrangler or now, a JL Wrangler. In fact, the last time we ran a set was back when we still had our old TJ Wrangler and mainly because it was in fact, a superior way to go. The sheet metal on the TJ body was thick and strong and installing protection on the body as opposed to the frame would help provide the most ground clearance you could get along the sides of your Jeep. Now, what changed all that was Jeep's need to make a lighter weight Wrangler and when the JK was introduced in 2007, they helped make that possible by making its body panels with much thinner steel. Over the years, what we've seen is that body mounted rock sliders actually caused damage to the body after taking on a hard hit and in some cases, to the point where opening doors became difficult if not impossible. Of course, the JL Wrangler has body panels that are just as thin if not thinner and clearly, that hasn't help anything. But, for all the benefits you can get from body mounted rocker guards, we found ourselves tempted to give it another go and did so with a set of EVO Bomber Rocker Guards.
In addition to looking really sharp, what we liked about the EVO Bomber Rocker Guards was the fact that you can get them with optional armored skins that allow you to tie the two together. By doing this, the load from a hard hit can be distributed across the entire rocker guard and body. And, if ever in the future we decided that they just weren't for us, they can easily be replaced with frame mounted rocker guards and new skins that bolt up right up to the body and in the exact same way. With all that said, this episode of the JL JOURNAL will show you what it takes to get set of EVO Bomber Rocker Guards installed on a Jeep JL Wrangler and we hope you find it to be useful.

Sweet looking guards. Extra thick nice! Not sure about the exposed bolt heads right on the bottom slider surface! Maybe they can alter the design so they are flush mounted in V2 edition? I see those wearing down once you start scraping them on rocks. Just like your front pumpkin bolt head did.
@wayalife
@wayalife 5 лет назад
LOL - you mean, more like the factory bolts on the cross member. I guess for me, it's never been a big deal and I'd rather run bolts that I can still work on even if mashed than flush mounted bolts that will still get jacked but to the point where you can't even get an allen wrench or any other kind of tool in them to work them out. At least with bolt heads, I can still file them down if and or when needed.

Those bombers look awesome. I noticed you didn't use anything between body and slider door final install. Not worried about dirt and or water getting behind the skin and body of the Jeep? I installed some Rock Slide Engineering steps on my JK and had to do similar style install but I also installed a rubber seal to help keep stuff out of there. Wondering what your thoughts are. Thanks

Not during install. I did apply some silicon along the edges though.
@xzerbaluyot9994
@xzerbaluyot9994 5 лет назад
Nice video Eddie. Like you, I'm not a big fan of body mounted sliders and the fact that you have to drill holes for the skins. I would worry that rust could build up between the skin and the body over time ( if that's even a possibility).
@wayalife
@wayalife 5 лет назад
The concern is legit if you live in an area where rust is an issue. I've not had that be a problem with a similar setup on my JK's but then, I live in Nevada.

@dmelberg
@dmelberg 5 лет назад
Am I missing something? Why would they design a slider with a bunch of bolt heads sticking out the bottom. Wouldn’t they get sheared off or at minimum damaged under actual use? I like the look of this product, but this seems like it could be an issue. Thoughts?
@wayalife
@wayalife 5 лет назад
LOL - you mean like all the factory bolts that stick out from things like the cross member or even the frame rail back in the JK days? Honestly, it's not that big of a deal and they ain't getting sheared off. In the almost 25 years that I've been doing this Jeep thing, I've seen plenty of banged up bolt heads but none have been bad enough that you couldn't just file down straight again if and when needed.
@wayalife
@wayalife 5 лет назад
@UClVeqyLpri_wcGXIWUez5SA @Derek Melberg It's all good and I didn't take it that way. If anything, a lot of the bolt head protection that I've seen over the years make things WORSE for when you have to remove bolts. For instance, the factory skids have tube like structures that are designed to protect the bolt heads only, they get smashed up and can make it near impossible to remove the bolts after the fact. I always prefer my bolt heads this way because at least, I can always get to them.

Hi Eddie, why you didn’t go with the EVO rock sliders like the one on MOBY and Mel‘s JL? don‘t they give you more clearance? BTW Informative vid as always!

They don't have them available yet and technically, these offer more clearance. We may still move over to the frame mounted sliders once they become available though as they are stronger.

Great video! I am going to get me a outsert tool for myself. Question though. When I installed my rear fender flares I did outserts. First time and a learning experience. I actually beveled out a hole a bit and I put in the nutsert. Problem is the outsert is slightly loose and spins from time to time when I installed my inner fender liners. What would be your suggestion to fix this? Can I remove the outsert in anyway? Or if I use the outsert tool and attach it would it maybe crush it more and make it snug? I am thinking maybe I didn't make it tight enough and even though the hole is slightly larger it then wouldn't move. What are your thoughts? Also, I really like those rocker guards and been debating on getting some for my JL. I am also looking at the EVO tire carrier since watching your video a while back as well.

LOL - yeah, my hands got pretty beat up on this one. As far as hardware goes, everything they provided was either grade 8 or stainless. While black would be nice, I don't know of too many that aren't just painted and end up chipping or wearing off. Black oxide is nice but it ends up rusting over time. Needless to say, I'm okay with what I got but can see your point.

Wayalife the cost is no different. Yes I pay more at Ace hardware for an M10 due to lower demand and limited locations to purchase metric, The cost of manufacturing Inch or Metric is the same. EVO purchases in bulk from a wide availability of suppliers. BTW my aftermarket bumper did ship with metric fasteners and yes it was manufactured in the USA. I hope EVO understands this is important to its consumers. For me it’s not a deal breaker but I do consider things like this in my purchases.

Wayalife Yea hopefully they come out with an actual cause or fix. Some have stated it goes away with applying some grease....others say they replaced the door checks(but surely that would only happen again to that one if the door check is the problem) and others have had the whole door replaced claiming something about glue coming apart on The aluminum seam on the inside 🤷🏻‍♂️(definitely not replacing the doors over a slightly annoying click sound) that’s a little extreme lol Anyway thanks so much for your response Eddie! I appreciate it! If you ever come across an actual cause or solution hopefully you can share it! Love the content, and your jeeps, your awesome! Edit: going to do my first oil change on her soon thanks you your video! Cheers!

@wayalife
@wayalife Год назад
Unfortunately, different shops use different powder and they all have different names. For our rocker guards, the shop that did the work called it a "cast black" but I know it isn't something that's universal. The best I can describe, it is a fine textured semi-gloss black.

Great video. Only bummer i see with those sliders is the 6 bolts that hand down. Those will get ground off. Bad design.
@wayalife
@wayalife 5 лет назад
LOL - you mean like all the factory bolts that stick down from things like the cross member or even the frame rail back in the JK days? Honestly, it's not that big of a deal. In the almost 25 years that I've been doing this Jeep thing, I've seen plenty of banged up bolt heads but none have been bad enough that you couldn't just file the sides down straight again if and or when needed. I'd rather have it this way than have "protection" that gets all beat up and prevent you from accessing the bolt at all. This is something I've seen and have had to deal with and to me, they are worse.
@Davidtheinfidel
@Davidtheinfidel 5 лет назад
Fair point. They just seem to be the sticking point now. Other brands either countersink or use those round UFO looking things to protect them. But I suppose a file and if needed vise grips would do the trick like you said.
@wayalife
@wayalife 5 лет назад
@@Davidtheinfidel From experience having to work on other people's Jeeps on the trail, countersunk bolts are the WORST! They still get mashed up and to the point where you can't get an allen wrench in them. At that point and without a drill, you're really out of options. As far as UFO's go, I've had to deal with them too and again, they'll still get mashed up on the rocks along with the bolt heads and at that point, you still can't get a socket on them. Again, this is all based on my personal experience and for me, I'd rather have a bolt head that I can stilla access and work on if needed. But, that's just me.

@wayalife

Even though the frame rails take a brunt of the abuse from rocks, yeah, that possibility does exists - just like all the other factory bolts such as the ones on the cross member. No big deal.

after watching the Evo Gladiator and you at EJS my thoughts on the sliders have changed. The bottom bolts are not as exposed as they look on camera. It's hard to tell when it is not in person.
@wayalife
@wayalife 5 лет назад
LOL - they're kind of tucked into a corner. While I won't say they could never get hit, hitting them isn't as easy as you'd think. You're more likely to hit the frame rails or the outer edge of the rocker guards first.

Both will get the job done much better than factory. These have a cleaner look but they are mounted to the body. So far, I have found them to hold up great in spite of the fact. The LoD is frame mounted and can take the abuse great because of it.
