Bought an 05 new for my wife, still driving the damn thing. Rides like a buckboard, guzzles gas, eats tailiights and headlight bulbs like mentos, but is a complete tank. No other vehicle has survived my wife this long.

I had an 05 Liberty Renegade for 12 years (bought new) -- gas mileage was a disappointment, I never got anywhere near 22 mpg mainly I think due to the obsolete 4 speed automatic, combined with my pretty short commute to work. The thing ate brake rotors -- 2005 was the first year with 4 wheel disk brakes, and I think they were undersized for the application. The seats were flat and not super comfortable, just sort of OK, but otherwise the interior was decent. One thing was the switches for the power windows were on the center console, not the doors, so I was always confused for a bit when I switched with my other car. The other disappointment was the roof rack and rock rails -- I was expecting them to be aluminum alloy, like the Nissan Xterra, but they were cheap steel with silver paint that peeled and rusted eventually. I didn't see a Renegade before I bought it, unfortunately -- the dealer didn't have one on the lot. Oops. Traded it in with 68K miles on a new 2017 Renegade Trailhawk... Full disclosure: my dad worked for Chrysler for 20 years and both Jeeps I bought using his Employee Purchase discount...

I had a Jeep Liberty 08 with 225,000 miles on it. When I first bought it in 2015 had a little over a 100,000 on it. Yeah I had a few minor maintenance issues. This Jeep was so durable and so reliable. Even when other vehicles have struck this Jeep. I'll be honest in Indiana on the highways. I would literally laugh at the ice and snow. I miss that jeep! My son now owns it. God bless and stay safe.

I owned a first gen Liberty and really enjoyed it. I thought it was good looking. It was fairly quick and handled well, very well in the snow with the 4 wheel drive. Amazing turning radius. The cargo room was good considering its small size. I never had any problems with it mechanically. You attribute its failure to the fact that it wasn't boxy enough from the get go, but I disagree. The sales really started to dip when they turned it into an ugly box.

I had a 2004 Columbia Edition and it was a tank! I put 125k miles on it, which also included a mid-run 2.5” lift kit and 31” tires. Without ABS, traction control and many other modern things to go wrong, only the water pump had to be replaced. It was powerful, rugged and I literally ran rings around a friend’s H2 in sand when he got stuck. It was 9 years old when I traded it in and that was only because of rust up here in salty NY. Good times...

My wife bought a 2006 new. It was a lot different than our 3 previous American designed Cherokees. However, after 14 years, what a great Jeep. The Germans did a great job building these Liberty jeeps. The only thing she has had go wrong are rubber bushings all wear out. normal tuneups, but the overflow water bottle cracks and leaks water onto the number 4 and 6 pistons - plugs, that kills the coils on those 2 cylinders and if not repaired as soon as the Jeep starts miss-firing, it can ruin the engine. I catch it every 3 or 4 years and put in a new overflow bottle - OEM only, new coils and new plugs. An hour or twos work, and the Jeep is running like new. Like I said it is now 14 years old with 150,000 plus miles on it. I bought her a new Patriot, she drove it for a few weeks, and went back to driving her Liberty! The German Liberty is a much better Jeep than the Italian Fiat Jeep. But I like the Fiat Jeep too. I actually really liked the French designed Grand Cherokee from the 1980's and 1990's- but we could never afford one.

My wife and I both had Liberties while we were dating, I had a first gen 06 her a second gen 08. They were both great little SUVs. I specifically wanted mine for its off road performance compared to other CUVs, there were no others that really did off road so that sold me. Even then over many miles the only issue I ever had was the pressure line to the power steering blow. My wife just liked the styling of hers but we took hers off road a fair bit too and it did pretty good. Only issue it ever had was a leaking input shaft seal not a big deal. After hers was lost to a bad hail storm she wanted a 11 Nitro shock with the 4L V6 that we still have. For the life of me I have no idea why they didn't just add the 4L as an option to the Liberty line up its a way better motor. To date the Nitro hasn't had any issues. Over all we have owned all the generations of the Liberties and had a great experience they were priced very well, it all depended what the consumer wanted. In a world where CUVs took over the liberty offered a compromise to handing and weight for off road capability.

I had a 2004 Liberty Sport. I loved having a simple, no nonsense, mechanical 4WD vehicle with high ground clearance, but that was about it for the Liberty. It was slow, bad on gas, and not very comfortable. I was able to take it through a forest on an ATV trail that didn't get a lot of use, and it became a completely different car (for the better). It was wonderful. Later in my ownership things started going wrong quickly, and the mechanical issues piled up faster than I could get them repaired, so I ended up having to get rid of it sooner than I wanted to.

My first gen Liberty is one of the best vehicles I ever owned. With over 300,000 kilometres on it and it still runs strong. All but the last year have been all over northern Canada. It has the original motor and transmission etc... and can still match the factory numbers on a drag strip. I did one pass out of curiosity two summers ago. She’s a go anywhere always starts and gets you there beastie. I have rescued some off road purpose built rigs with her. After witnessing the go anywhere reliability I have with mine. I have converted several friends from other brands foreign and domestic, to wanting one just like mine. I can tow 5,000 lbs. with an equalizer hitch that goes to 7,500 lbs. I get 8 times better mileage than my friends similar age C-RV. The only things I do differently than most people is I run a synthetic 10w30 vs the 5w30 minimum weight oil, premium plus gas, and I put a K&N filter in the factory housing. The filter jumped my economy up 30 km’s per tank. I know any true Liberty fans will point out that the manual say 87 octane only. But over 300,000 km’s and it still runs like new would prove otherwise. To all the octane higher octane makes no difference I would show you my Liberty and say you can’t argue the results. I can do everything thing better on premium plus

Stupid little buttons and big fingers. I cut my self off mid thought. I had tried running her on regular gas, I lost power, fuel mileage. By approximately 30% she also ran rough. I tried it for a month. Just so my mom would get off my back about your wasting money on premium plus gas. It most be nice to be so rich etc... so I switched back. Plus on regular gas from the same station. She smelled bad when she was running. Wich she never did before. When I switched back after about 3 tanks no more bad smells. Once she reaches full operating temperature. You almost can’t smell her at all. I have the same transmission, transfer case, brakes and a few other things as my buddies 1997 Dodge 3/4 ton cumins diesel truck. Both totally stock. So those parts on my little Jeep should be nearly bulletproof. Plus a little known fact about first gen Liberty’s and same year Dakotas is that those random bumps on the inside of the roof aren’t so random. They are actually a built in roll cage. Not a race approved one or anything that fancy. But if you have an oops. It will keep you head from getting a flat spot on the top side. They were not everybody’s cup of tea. But especially the sport model are little tanks. I’ve personally from a stop pushed snow that was up to the base of my windshield with out a problem. For over 1/2 a kilometre. I just put her in 4 low and went. I probably could have used 4 high. But I figured why cause more stress on her than need be. It was already -50c Some people hate them. As for me I hope to be buried in mine in as many decades from now as possible. End of rant. 🙂

When I met my late wife she had a blazer and wanted to get a CR-V. We went to a Honda lot and someone had traded in a 2005 Jeep Liberty Ltd with only 70,000km. (Canada here). I thought it was awesome and talked her into it and we both loved it and had it until she passed away 7 years later. A couple of years after at 302,000 km the valves were going or something, so it was hard to start when it was hot. My youngest son wanted to get his license with it so we went early so it would be cool when it was his turn. Figures, the guy before him cancelled and it was sitting for only 5 minutes when the instructor came out. I was asked to vacate and stood a short distance away looking at my son. The guy went around the car making notes and then said, 'ok, start it up'. My son and I looked at each other somewhat fearful and it started up perfect. Apparently the instructor looked over at the odometer and commented impressed. A month later I couldn't deal with not wanting to pull over for gas when it was hot because it wouldn't start again. A couple of times I left it running, but some garages frown on that. So I then found a 2006 with only 129,000 km on it and asked for my mechanic to check it over. When it came around the corner my mechanic said, "What?!?! it's the same damn color." LOL Bought it and still loving the Liberty. I lived in Toronto then and sold the 2005 for $500.00 for a guy's wife who would just use it for grocery shopping which was perfect. I dirtbike, so am towing a trailer with bikes regularly. My 2006 is now at 250,000km and it uses a bit of oil and a few new issues have arrived. I could put a bunch of money into it, but I just saw another 2006 with only 150,000km, no rust, tow package,....basically what I have with less miles, so will be getting it this week I hope. For a bit more money I also see a mint 2010 with the same km's which would do. I would have to put a hitch on it though. Towing has always been my incentive and now I have a house on top of a hill with a winding black diamond ski hill sloped driveway to it. Noone visits me in the winter which is fine. I can visit them,....my Liberty goes up and down hills in snow just fine. Two thumbs up for the Liberty. Onwards and upwards. When I wear out my next one I hope there is still another with low mileage and no rust around. I think I can sell my current one for over a grand for same deal as my 2005,...someone who won't need it lots or for long distances. Keep paying them forward.

Problems: Gas Cap Power windows Windy noise on the high way Tire pressure sensors. Performance is remarkable. I love your videos, awesome that you are going into Jeep now. I would ask only one thing to discontinue in the future: please do not use Consumer Reports as a reference for FCA vehicles. It’s a near guarantee that they dislike their cars. Their reliability ratings are often completely the opposite of what American car owners (owners of American cars) experience. That’s about as loaded a topic you can have. Request: Jeep Compass/Patriot. A much maligned vehicle but loved by many who know how to care for their cars. Thanks!

From personal experience my aunt owned a 2002 Sport 4WD model many years ago and I actually liked it a lot, it was comfy and the 3.7 sounded pretty nice. But the MPG is what drove her to trade it in for a then 1 year old 2007 Sentra

@55metalmonkey
@55metalmonkey 7 месяцев назад
@ciarrarichards311 Yes still have it. I would recommend searching year specific issues and what the parts could cost. I can work on my own vehicles so (for me anyway ) it's just parts if it needs any. Also would reccomend checking local mechanics for the price on a pre-purchase inspection. As much as I know vehicles (repair and restoring clasics) it is sometimes the smartest thing to do. The guy I deal with charges $140 and goes through literally everything. When I bought the 03 Liberty he gave me a 5 page report. 70% was small things I would have passed over. 20% was things I knew about and the last 10% was things I don't have the equipment to check or would have thought to check. Do it before you buy since it helps negotiate the price
@ciarrarichards311
@ciarrarichards311 7 месяцев назад
@@55metalmonkey Ok. I will check into that. And also, the Jeep has 185k miles on it. But I been told by the owner that everything has been maintained/checked recently. He's asking for 4k as the price, but I believe that's a little pricy for that many miles. I've read the description of everything that's been done. With that many miles, I am not sure it'll be worth it. What would you reccomend?
@55metalmonkey
@55metalmonkey 7 месяцев назад
@ciarrarichards311 4k usd seems a little high but to be fair I paid 2k for mine and put another 2k into it just because I hate a new to me car that there is something I know is not perfect. Call around to local mechanics (not dealerships) and find out what a pre-purchase inspection costs, most are quite reasonable. Tell the seller you are interested but want it checked over by 'your mechanic' and you'll pay for it. If he has nothing to hide there should be no problem. If work needs to be done negotiate a price from an educated position, if you two cant reach a mutual decent price then worse case you are only out the price of an inspection. I've had a truck I was interested in for my wife once (ford sporttrack) that looked decent but had a slight tick so had it checked and my mechanic just said "walk away even if it's free" the engine was about to grenade and the repair for what was causing the tick (timing chains and tension cartridges plus labour) would cost more than the thing was worth and was so labor intensive with specialty tools that you couldn't reasonably do it yourself..... sometimes it pays to pay a pro that sees 100x more vehicles/week than you would. Still 4k seems on the high side but if nothing needs work (engine compression, oil pressure and trans/4wd and suspension are good) it might be a good deal

Nicely done!👍 It's too bad I didn't find something like this, last summer, before I purchased a 2008 Jeep Patriot 4x4. I was looking for a replacement for a 1989 Jeep Cherokee XJ 4x4, that was written off in May. The XJ was perfect for my requirements, but highway & trail ready Cherokee XJs, are hard to find. I wasn't aware of the subframe issues with the Patriot and it's lack of upgrade-ability. Six days after I drove off the used car dealers lot, this Patriot left me stranded on a cottage road, more than 300 kilometers from home, when the front subframe broke apart, due to rusting at the front control arm mount. The right tire made a hard right turn and jammed into the wheel well. Lucky for me, that I was traveling very slow at the time, and just came to a dead stop. If that had happened 15 minutes earlier, while driving at highway speed, I could have been a casualty in the ditch, or under the wheels of a transport. I'm still looking for another XJ! A Wrangler would work, but my wife would have me buying the weekly groceries.😕

I have an 08 Sport. Got it in a package deal on an rv. Set up for 4 down towing, but use it as my daily driver. Gas mileage is my biggest complaint. Long way from being the best vehicle I've had, but it is great in this MN snow. Reliable enough that I will keep driving it until it has a major breakdown. Stereo has a short in the aux jack, drivers door window switch glitchy, cruise works when it wants to, rear fender wells rusting out, rear glass corroded out hinge, and 4x4 starting to have some glitches. But, all that is in a vehicle that has 196.000 but just keeps going. Might get another one when this one dies.

I have a 2008 Liberty 4x4 sport that is silver with black trim. I really like the interior and especially the dark background gauge cluster...is a timeless classy look imho. It's had some problems like the rear differential going bad and leaking rear axle seal. I have trouble with the air vents that only work on defog and a fuse that blows all the time for the cigarette lighter socket (will fix them when it gets warmer out). The heat shield above the muffler fell out (don't think I needed it anyway lol). It has a rust spot in the left rear door jam although I coated it with POR15 which seams to have almost stopped it and also on the outside it looks in very nice shape still. I put some nice chrome/black spoke rims on it a couple years ago. It has had a couple of other minor things like wiper spray nozzle that broke (Michigan weather) and rear window struts were weak and so replaced. I replaced the driver side window controller for a worn out driver window button. It currently just rolled over to 124k. It lives outside and never has been garage kept yet has kept it's finish pretty nice. I don't know what the gas mileage is (not great but not horrible either)...maybe 18ish in the city where I mostly drive it. It's not perfect but I still very much like it. It is a TANK thru the snow (Michigan weather) and I get compliments how it looks at my work (usually from women), especially when I tell them it is a 2008 now 12 years old. I also have a 2009 Dodge Ram 1500 that has the same 3.7 motor with 84K. I very much like this motor as the oil changes on it are WAY cheaper (doesn't need special oil) than the 3.6 Pentastar motor in my wifes 2019 Sahara Wrangler and both of these 3.7 motors have been good to me so far (knocking on wood right now). It has tow mode I use when I occasionally take it on a 4 hour trip up north Michigan to the family log cabin towing a 5x8 trailer with my quad and wood processing gear and such. My wife's Wrangler doesn't have a tow bar and my truck is 2WD so I take the Liberty in the winter as it's 4WD is most excellent. We get a lot of snow in Northern Michigan (although this year not so much). I may trade it up in a year or two (wondering what the new Ford Bronco will look like) but for now I am still very happy with it.

2009 Liberty here. I'm the first and only owner. I actually love it, but UGH. I don't think I can continue sinking more money into it. It's less than 82,000 miles and the heater core failed TWICE resulting in costly dashboard-removing and reinstallation because the dashboard was in the way repairs, the stupid sky slider doesn't move anymore (I only ever moved it slightly forwards then backwards periodically to make sure it was as closed as it could be after trying it a few days after getting it and regretting it), and the transmission went out TWICE. It just went out the second time a couple days ago. It's a few months out of warranty from the previous time it was replaced. The dealer might be able to convince corporate to extend the warranty the few months, but it's still wait and see right now. I really love driving this Jeep, but it's becoming more and more of a pain in my neck.

I understand brand loyalty, but the Cherokee Nation has asked Chrysler to stop using Cherokee as a name for one of their vehicles, and Chrysler unkindly declined. There actually is a way to rename a car without hurting its sales. For example, Chrysler's minivan was named the Town & Country for over two decades, and they renamed it the Pacifica in 2017, and it actually sold better despite the name change after that long. The reason the Liberty did not work out that way is probably because that name has nothing to do with wildlife, and that is what Jeep's platform is about. There were also reliability issues and old-fashioned design as you mentioned, but the name has no impact on those things. I would try changing the name of the Jeep Cherokee, Grand Cherokee, and Grand Cherokee L to the Habitat, Grand Habitat, and Grand Habitat L. I bet a lot of Jeep fans would like the name Habitat better than the name Cherokee when Liberty would not help because Habitat is highly wildlife related.

I bought a 2012 from a dealer who took it in on trade for a Cherokee in 2015...it had 40k miles...it now has 108k miles and other than brakes and ordinary repair runs like a JEEP...the indestructable TANK that this brand is no matter what the iteration......a great no frills basic SUV

I have a 2004 Limited hundred fifty thousand miles on it. Thank God I was only going 5 miles an hour instead of 95 miles an hour when the lower right front ball joint came apart you'd think that would be a recall.

I love my 2007 limited edition the only thing I regret is not having it in 4x4, but other than that, I love it, I do think it looks gorgeous, love the round lights and I sincerely dislike the boxy 2nd gen, I wouldn´t buy it at all. The liberty made me fall in love of camping and as soon as I have the money I´ll get a wrangler, its the obvious path to go for me.

I had a 99 Cherokee until the front axle mounts rusted off in 2012. I got a new liberty and still have it. No problems or troubles. My daily driver is a 2003 Chevy S10 ZR2 , so what do I know? Hahaha
