I hope this gives you some inspiration and maybe an idea or two to bud your own sleeping platform!

I think this is the most simple and practical sleeping platform I saw. Great info.

Awesome! Nice and simple. Thinking through a similar setup for my jeep, great to see that a minimal approach can check so many boxes and be functional: ✔Creates a low profile sleeping platform and provides storage options ✔Rear seats stay in and easily converts back to a four seater ✔Simple, inexpensive storage boxes and the top flips up allowing access to entire space ✔Platform covers rear seats providing flat area for additional items and retains "stuff" space around and under seats. ✔Gotta love the gutter screen idea for ventilation!

You did a really nice job there. I also have a JKU with a J30 and I'm still in the process of figuring out the "downstairs". Thanks for the ideas!

Me too! John, you could commercialize your downstairs if you were feeling the motivation to. I haven't seen a really great non-homemade alternative to the goose gear system yet. I like how the back folds open and how you have raised the platform just enough to be able to travel over the folded down front seats. Really nice work! If you feel like making a pattern of all the pieces I would be interested in buying it.

Thanks for the nice comments. I have moved in from this particular platform now that I have a fridge and one of my daughters has grown. I may make a video showing my new setup for more ideas for those who like diy projects.

Maybe I missed it but how tall is the back platform to be level with the back seat?
@johnwalker3263
@johnwalker3263 8 месяцев назад
That’s a variable because this platform was built with a rear seat recline kit installed. The platform height can be measured with a level and a yard stick off of the top of the rear seat folded. Hold the yard stick level on the top of the seat back and measure to the rear deck to get your overall height. In my second video on the subject I show a method for getting the seat height you’ll need without a recline kit. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-bZX_LgfMggg.htmlsi=8-aX-r_0OPh_Egu2

I built the whole sleeping platform thing, too, only I first just covered over the really bad folded down back seat area so that I have a flat platform to carry stuff like groceries. Then I added two more forms on 1x4s back to the rear door. And Menards has perfect light weight carpeting at a low cost that makes it really nice.

Sorry I don’t. They’re easy enough to figure though. I used a couple pieces of cardboard to cut out and fit the sides and then I taped them together to form a stencil for the top piece.

Great video, I am starting to build a platform right now and your design I am stealing a lot from. Any suggestions on the hinges? What did you use? Do you think there is better options? Thanks Justin
@johnwalker3263
@johnwalker3263 Год назад
Justin, I borrowed the hinges from an old particle board cabinet so I would suggest looking at junk furniture if you want to hinge it. My second platform that I built and am still using isn’t hinged at all and it works better, imo. You can find that video on my channel if you’d like some more ideas. I took the best things from the first platform and improved it slightly. Thanks for the compliment!

I need to tell you that it works much better with a seat recline kit. The kit raises the back of the seat when folded so the platform is tall enough to store things under.

Great video. Are the compression latches flush including the trigger? I am trying to find some that are 100% flush but the ones I find have a raised trigger.

hi very nice build!! Do you have to always move front seat forward in order to get sleep? So how much is the height of the rear elevation part? Thank you!!
@johnwalker3263
@johnwalker3263 Год назад
The seats have to move all the way forward and tilted. The platform gives you 6’2” of length.

Awesome video and design. I'm inspired to build my own sleeping platform now. One question - did you lose access to the rear storage compartment under the mat? Seems like the center beam prevents it from opening. Thanks!
@johnwalker3263
@johnwalker3263 2 года назад
I have the subwoofer under there so I didn’t need access. The design could be easily modified for access to that though. The middle partition wouldn’t be needed at all with some thicker plywood.

I recycled those out of a panel that was going to scrap, but I just went out and looked at them and they have spep.com stamped on the back side. I think they're Sierra Pacific brand Sealed Flush Trigger Compression Latch 47bk.

Hi! Can you share the measurements please?
@johnwalker3263
@johnwalker3263 2 года назад
I can do that! For the front sections I used 1/2" plywood and the measurements are 17" x 42" for the small one and 26" x 42" for the bigger one. I cut a square out in the top corner to clear the console. The cutout is 9.5" deep by 9" wide. The top of the main platform is made from a piece of 3/16" plywood that is 29.5" deep by 43.25" wide at the widest point. I had to cut it for the contours on the sides. For that task I used an old piece of cardboard for a template. Once I had it cut out I traced the pattern off of the cardboard to the plywood with a pencil.A pine 1x8 will work for the base of the storage platform but it will need ripped to get the correct height depending on your setup. I should mention that I had a seat recline kit for the rear seat installed when I built this and that dictated how tall the main platform is. With the recline kit installed the seats don't fold as far down, which works great for supporting the front sections. Without the seat recline kit installed I wouldn't have had room for the bin and stove storage. If you're curios about another way to get some height out of the rear seat without a recline kit let me know. I had to remove my recline kit and build a modified platform to get some room for my new fridge. My teenagers loved the recline kit though and I highly recommend it if you can spare a few inches less in the rear cargo area.
