Rubber band the grip on the shifter. Works for my 2016 volt to bypass the 30mins so I can camp/nap with AC on

I use mine to power my camper! I can get around 15 hours of AC on battery alone. About 40 hours of camper power without running the AC. I'm using a 2000watt pure sine inverter and installed a soft start in my AC and it works perfectly!

Great video/tutorial. An additional reason not to use a larger inverter is you can fry your starting battery since the power has to flow through it instead of coming directly from the 17kw pack.

Hey Brandon, I think you're doing a great job on testing out the 4xe. On this one, you'll have to know about watts, amps and volt. A 1500 watt 12v inverter will run 125 amps. (W=AV). You'll need 2 gauge wire if you're pulling 125amps. Anything less is a fire hazard. Safety First. Not trying to toll. Just don't want anyone to catch their 4xe or house on fire.

Most people would want this just to keep their refrigerator running. Quick note on that. The compressors surge up to 500-800 watts on startup and then settle down to 200-300. Make sure you have the overhead for that surge.

Though I get that it could be supremely dangerous, I wonder if we could tap into the big battery and just run a 400v DC to 240v AC converter. This would be leaps and bounds more efficient than using the IDCM to step down to 12v DC, and then using a DC-AC inverter to go back up to 120v ac.

I'd swap out the factory 12v battery with AGM deep cycle battery like a Northstar or Odyssey which is designed for cycling use, it would be a great addition.

How long can you run 1000w output on a tank of gas? Do you have a way of shutting it down before you run out of fuel? Even if you don't this is still awesome!

Brandon can you provide some video of how you ran the wires back to the trunk area from the battery side of the jeep. Looks really tight over there. I need to run some heavy guage wire to the back for my ARB fridge. I was considering taking through the driver side grommet that's easy to access.

Instead of unplugging the door, what if you left the car in neutral and put blocks behind the wheels?

So, to confirm that like in a Prius or other Toyota hybrid that you can keep it running to sleep in? In a Prius or Camry hybrid, I’m able to leave the car running all night with climate control on AUTO 72° F all night to sleep in. The engine cycles a few times in those 8 hours.

This is awesome! Could you do all of this while the Jeep is charging? We are going camping in a couple weeks at a camp ground that has 30 amp hookups. I got a converter so I could charge the Jeep with the level 1 cord. We are planning on camping out of the Jeep. Wonder if I can keep it charging and run the heat through the night without the gas engine engaging. Night time temps are supposed to be in the low 40s. I assume we could disconnect the drivers side door and keep the climate on auto similar to the video?

if you had a solar panel connected to the 12v battery would the dc to dc converter put power back into the high voltage battery? (obviously it wouldn't do it fast...)

Love the videos, so I have a question pertaining to this. It looked like the inverter was wired to the Jeep 12V battery? If so it would die quickly, assuming that the BIG battery had charge it pushes power to the 12V battery correct? Only while the Jeep is running? You know the 12V plug in the back? If I plug a fridge into that assuming BIG battery was charged would it power the fridge until all power was deleted?

Can you do another test for us? Run 100 watts off the inverter, and check the wattage being pulled off the 12v battery. I'm interested in knowing what the "overhead" is of doing this. Wattage that the Jeep uses to be in "ready/run" state. Your test looks amazing for camping. But what if the Jeep being "on" is pulling 500 watts, so that I can use 20 watts of led lights.

Hi Brandon, I’m a non initiated in electricity and I only gave 1 single question. Based on your experience, if I’m overlanding and camping…. Can I plug the small fridge with the plug at the back of the Jeep for 2-3 days? On top of that, I would be using the Jeep everyday so essentially, I would need the battery to be able to run the small fridge during 10 hours straight. I appreciate you take the time to answer. So the Ford will be able to power your house with the main EV battery not the 12v ca battery. Maybe you should find a way to tap into the main 17Kw battery to power the house...

Hope Rubicon would consider building a generator or self charge for the Jeep since you need it without even a stop over to charge.

I was under the impression backup power had to have a limiter plate or transfer switch that forced the main breaker off, when the backup breaker is on, maybe that requirement varies state to state?

I have an intriguing curiosity about one aspect of the charging/generating system. So at idle in E save, in battery recharge, it'll do 1kwh roughly.. But what would happen if you put the transfer case in neutral, (Set the brake obvs..) and then put it in drive? Theoretically, this would turn the traction motor in the transmission creating more "generator" effect. I've looked everywhere and I've not seen anyone post about it yet or if it makes a difference. Even better, if you were able to rev the engine up to 1500-2k and let it run in this setup, you might have a way to recharge the battery in a long term emergency power outage at a pretty substantial rate! ..It's a cool theory, so I figure you're the guy to ask!

Do we think this will destroy your 12V battery over time? Have you tried this with the outlet in the rear seat? Thinking I read that's only 150W

I always wanted in a car was a nice inverter. It doesn't have to be an electric or a hybrid car just for an inverter. When electric cars first started becoming popular like with the tesla model s back in 2012 they never even considered it when it was right there. The wattage determines how much you can run even if you're not familiar with what that load might look like in appliances. 1000 watts can come in many shapes and sizes. It could be 8x house lights a fridge and 2x TVs, or it could just be a single skill saw. You never came near 1500 watts. Either way it's an extraordinary convenience we have yet to normalize. A 2000 watt inverter for $200 and a second battery in your car can power everything you just ran and more for the same length of time you just ran it for. Electric and hybrid cars just make the perfect candidates for an inverter compared to killing the battery in a regular car or finding a place to put a second battery.

How do you hook it up to your house so the house doesn’t use any power on the grid?
