If you have an issue with your Jeep randomly losing power for just a second and lurching forward then this video is for you. It also should work for any Dodge/Chrysler/Jeep 3.6 Pentastar V6
Changed mine on my 2013 yrs ago..$16 part..dealer didn't even know what CPS was..tried to tell me my computer was fried..went to a couple jeep forums.found the fix..Love my Jeep ppl
Thank you for putting this on RU-vid. I too had a similar problem with my wife's 2013 Jeep. Had the same problem for about 1 and 1/2 years, took it to a Jeep dealer and spent a lot of money and they could not fix it. I did what you suggested and the Jeep drives like a new vehicle. I'm even getting about 3 more miles per gallon. I rarely comment on social media. I just wanted to say Thank You for taking the time and posting the solution!
Matt I was wondering if you had an issue when you snapped the throttle quick if it would choke out before revving up? Was looking at an 18 Jeep for my daughter the other day and I was doing that when I started it at the dealer. Thanks for any input.
@hd100thjd Yesss just did mine today. It would choke out then lunge forward like I had NOS 😂 try to get it for cheap and hope thats it. For me it was around 40mph 3rd gear i think. 2012 wrangler
@@matthew9826 Just brought a 2018 JK 3.6 3 weeks ago. My only issue is I feel it’s slow or doesn’t come out the gate running fast like I have to floor it to get up to 55/65 Mph. The dealership says it’s fine. So my question is would the CPS help far as speed or horsepower? Help
@@tellyjones2434 Honestly, these engines are underpowered. The torque doesn't kick in until like 3500 4000, RPM. I thought the same thing when I bought mine new. I just started shifting later rather than sooner. I'm assuming you have a manual?
Well kind sir, 3 years later I watched your short video and indeed it made my day. My '13 Town & Country has a new genuine Mopar CPS and it hasn't run this well in 18 months. Dealer couldn't figure it out - similar story to many commenters here. Many thanks for leveraging what you learned by showing us all what it takes.
OMG!!! I can't thank you enough. Mine started about 8 months ago and I was going insane. I even replaced my valve body because I "thought" I knew what it might be. $20 instead of $500.....I feel like an idiot.
@@brianlackey3834Awesome! I hope this definitely fixes your issue. It seems like even the dealerships still haven't caught on to this. There's still people taking their Jeeps to the dealer and they're saying nothing's wrong with it.
@matthew9826 I believe you. That's why I call them "Stealership's." Still can't believe I wasted $500 on a valve body swap. Good thing I did it myself or I would have wasted over 1K. Thanks again brother!
This video made my day. Have the same 2013 Jeep, and had the same problem. Also frustrated me for a little over a year. Started so infrequently I thought it might be a transmission issue so got a flush, nope. Then a new air filter, nope. Then a dealer guy drove it, no luck. How about a new MAP sensor, nah. Finally found this vid down a rabbit hole that began when I started using the adjective “hiccup” to describe the feeling in acceleration. Got the part, installed and the Jeep feels brand new. I can’t believe how easy that was to fix and how hard it was to figure out. Hell yeah. Thank you. I was about at my wits end ;)
I've been trying to figure out this issue with my 2012 wrangler! Since you changed the crankshaft have you had the stalling issue at all? I'm at 180,000 km
Bingo! Same thing happened to my 2016 Jeep just was not running great and it finally pulled a code and check engine light came on…it was the Crank Position Sensor and called NAPA and they said they had one in stock. I bought it and changed it with like one bolt holding it on and drove it the next morning…OMG…it was like a new car…fun, quick, responsive again and me very happy!!!
Thank you for this info. My 2013 started having this issue, stuttering on acceleration, and once it even lost all power while driving. Though after 15 minutes, I was able to start back up and continue on my way. No codes ever showed up. I bought the crank position sensor within minutes of watching this video, and replaced it myself. Solved the problem immediately. Tip: wait at least an hour after driving to replace the sensor. Everything down there gets real hot!
Same thing started happening to me. At first it was like my engine shutoff really fast for like a second then kicked back on. Then it started happening until it shut off on me at a red light, at a stop light and almost put me on the side of the highway. It turned the engine off and left my electrical on., didnt throw any codes as well. Started happening to me around 190 thousand miles. Currentmy have 242k on mine. It was the crankshaft position sensor. Had the same issue one time on a grand cherokee yrs ago . Glad u got ur figured out and fixes
Thank you for the video!!! My 2015 Jeep Wrangler unlimited at highway speeds lost power and had the RPMs go to 0 for a split second and would regain power and be fine for several days before doing it again. This happened four times to me. I was telling my dad about it at Christmas yesterday, he said, “it might be your crank sensor”. Well, thanks to my phone listening in on our conversation that night, I was scrolling down my RU-vid feed and found your video, 3rd video down. And thought what the hell, I’ll try it for $20. Today the jeep ran great, I picked up the sensor at O’Reilly’s, went to the gym. When I was leaving the gym, for the first time the Jeep starting running like shit and had no power. Misfiring and finally threw a code and what do you know it was the crank position sensor. I changed the sensor and cleared the code in the McDonald’s parking lot and the Jeep ran like new on the way home. Thank you again for taking the time to make the video!
Had the same problem a few years back. I did take it to the dealership with same response. Took it home bought the part and replace it in 15 minutes. Problem resolved. By the way mine was shutting off while driving from a stand still and it would love to do it in intersections.
Update!! Mines a 2013 with almost 42,000 miles. I put a comment on here about an hour or so ago. I went right down to O’reilly and they had ONE in stock. Here’s to hoping that’s my issue. Thanks again brother.
AMEN !! same symptoms... 2015 JKU Sport. Suddenly no throttle, RPMs dropped to 0 periodically, then comes back. Gradually started stalling too. Within a week I found this post. Replaced the sensor in 10 minutes. Problem gone. THANK YOU !
Just bought my Jeep. Yeah, had high miles, so i didn't expect perfection- but I am retired E.O.D. - so not about to tolerate any BS. Anyway, I am jazzed to see this vid ! Tomorrow will switch it out ! Thanks! Wulfy OG
Same exact issue with my '14. Could not figure it out for the longest time and got so annoyed and pissed. Fixed my hesitation problem and I think it even shifts nicer as well. Thanks for the help and heads up.
Thank you very much! I changed the spark-plugs several months ago because of this issue at 60K miles 2012 Rubicon, but the issue continued. Just replaced the sensor and I am going for a 40 miles ride and hope the problem is solved. One thing I noticed was that the rubber seal from the old part was flat compared to the new one which makes me wonder. Thanks again!
Just hit 250K and my 2012 is doing the same now at least twice a week and shutting down. I just changed mine, 10 min tops, and fingers are crossed. Thanks!
bruh, this is my issue, guaranteed. I am just under 50k miles on a 2015 JK and this sudden loss of power "for a second" thing just started happening to me after I shipped my vehicle from Hawaii to San Diego. One quick YT search and here I am. Thanks.
I changed my camshaft position sensor and crankshaft position sensor at the same time. I have a newer Jeep and it was not in an easily accessible location as yours but it was still cheaper than taking it in to the shop
I’ve replaced almost every sensor and was about to replace the throttlebody because of hesitation and power loss and tomorrow I was going to pull out the TIPM and replace it. I’m gonna try your trick and I hope it saves me a lot of money and frustration. Thank you.
Thanks brotha, that was exactly what was wrong with my Jeep. Bought the part and just like you said, five minutes and the problem solved. (Jeeping in the USVI)
Thanks a lot....I have the same symptoms on my 2013 jk....I will change the cranck sensor and hopefully it works....I been dealing with this problem for a long time and also the dealership has not been able to fixed it but they sure charge for their time waisted.
I had the same problem, checked everything, nothing, ordered a new crank position sensor but have to wait for a week so pulled it out gave it a good spray and cleaned it, hasn’t happen again. Thanks for sharing, I was loosing my mind hahaha 🤪
Absolutely crazy!! My girlfriends 2014 rubicon has been doing this, just going down the road and it suddenly loses power like it's starving for fuel then dies. Wait a few minutes and it starts right up like nothing happened and maybe 2-3 month later it happens again, no codes or any real sign of a problem. Very intermittent, definitely worth throw a cheap part at it and see if that will resolve the issues. Thank you for posting
@@matthew9826 So I picked up the part and went under the jeep only to find the bolt that holds it in is snapped off so obviously this part has been changed before so now I'll have to figure out how I'm going to drill it out in a tight space before I can replace the part.
@@tomfoolery8640 dang how was it even staying in with the bolt broke off? Heck that could actually be your issue right there with the sensor not being fully seated
@@matthew9826 looks like they use form a gasket or gasket sealer to hold it into place, I'm hoping when i take out the sensor there will be enough of a nub to work with as far as extracting the remaining part of the bolt. still i know this is going to be a hold your breath and hope for the best.
Same thing with my 2013 rubicon 2dr,, 70+000 along with,, leaking Oil Cooler ( bout $1000. , rear wheel sensor and bearing $810.,, loss of coolant, small crack in overflow container $22. And let’s not forget Lil heat issue.! Thank you for info,, Greatly appreciated !!!
@@matthew9826 I never did smell coolant and it never left a puddle but every week the reservoir was dry. Upon inspection, I noticed a coolant residue below reservoir that led to a tiny crack in reservoir. Replaced it and haven’t lost any coolant since.
Can't wait to try this on my 2012. Dealer said it was an oil gallery plug and that repair did nothing. Same symptoms: stalling on initial acceleration, stalling when in 6th gear at 60+mph, cruise control canceling when it stalls, no error codes, los of oil pressure when it happens. Thank you!
@@isthereafeeforthis Awesome!!! I'm happy to hear this fixed it for you. Unfortunately you're not the only one that went to a dealer and they told you there was nothing wrong or something else. It happened to me and a couple other people in the comments, it's kinda sad and seems to be a common issue I don't understand how they don't know this is the problem.
I’m Trying this method ! I recently got 2016 Jeep Wrangler Stick shift , started having problems Not being able to turn on . Dealerships couldn’t figure out said it was PCM , changed a new one . Now it’s a ‘ Tipsdip ‘ line that runs to the PCM . Anyhow Now it turns on fine , but on the freeway my Jeep started to pull foward on first gear and barely getting second gear . ( after I was bumper to bumper on a 99 degree hot weather ) So Now I’m trying this Method . Hopefully this can Actually fix the Jeep . Thanks
Mine went bad around 90k miles and I was pretty sure the CPS was the problem but like you, it wouldn't throw a code. I drove it for a bit longer and it slowly got worse, eventually it threw a code and then the dealer fixed it under warranty. Knowing what I know now, I'd just fixed it myself and sooner. It's lame that it takes so long for it to trigger the code.
this is good to know. I have a 2014 with 110k miles and have noticed not so much a hesitation, but a bit of a hiccup/jerkiness to the acceleration, but it's really minor for now and I think it's improved since i changed out the old air filter recently. gonna monitor it to see if it's related (already replaced the spark plugs and trans fluid). these jeeps do have quirks. really have to follow the maintenance to a tee in order to keep them running properly.
Hoping this is my issue. Going to pop one in later today. Put the new one in and no immediate changes yet. Its slightly better but the issue is still there. Im hoping i just need to give it time. Ill see how it drives home from work tonight.
I hope this is the fix for what I believe is the same issue. Over the las week while on the freeway my Jeep would fluctuate in speed. The ABS light would come on along with the battery light for a split second. The Speedometer would drop from current speed of 60/65 down to 40 mph and then back. Meanwhile I felt a loss of power even with my foot hammered down on the gas pedal. No Codes show on the dash. I turned around to go back home and maintained speed of 60mph with no issues. Off to Riley's for a Crankshaft Sensor.
Great video, bud! A couple of things: 1.) That hood looks amazing! 2.) Is that a bit of a valve cover gasket issue down there or is it early and my eyes are playing tricks on me? Anyway, thanks for posting!
Thanks! It's apparently a common problem with these 3.6s I currently have a gladiator with the same engine and I had to warranty it out for the exact same reason. It's the gasket for the timing chain cover. Luckily it started leaking before my warranty was up. I bought it brand new in 2021 and it started leaking around 2023. My JK started leaking right after the warranty of course lol.
Interesting that Jeep service department said that it was nothing. They are trained to find SOMETHING. And surprised they didn’t tell you they would need to crank off the top and check the camshaft/recommend 1500 for the part and 2200 or so for the labor if it was malfunctioned at the bottom. My jeep kind of had similar problems but my engine light actually came on later and was diagnosed as a cylinder two misfire. Unfortunately for me it wasn’t as simple as coils and plugs. It was pricy!
Yeah I was very upset over the fact that they charged me 2 hours labor for nothing. They basically said we took it out for a test drive over an hour and it never happened, I figured they'd hook up a scan tool to it and probably see something out of the ordinary but guess I was wrong.
I had one of them go on my 2015 Rubicon on same engine. Scan tool told me which one to change. My symptom was traction lock light would come on over 75Mph, which would lock up rear brakes which Jeep simply overpowered. I had to turn off traction control from switch and when I stopped, smelled the bakes burning. It would also throw the check engine light. Once crankshaft sensor replaced.. all fixed. Occasionally I got EVAP check engine light on also, that has gone away also since changing this crank shaft sensor so maybe it was all related and threw codes being on same BUS network.
Changed mine out on my 2012, 2 weeks later did it again. Took it to mechanic, plug had a broke wire and also one wire was broke at steering column. $600 later…..
Oh, I know it was a very good engine. In fact, Chrysler is actually bringing it back; it's supposedly going to be put in a couple of different models later this year.
Thank you been trying to figure it out shop's couldn't figure it out and it didn't want to do it when I went to go show them also started off small now doing it 2+ times a day
I had this same problem. It turned out to be a kinked fuel line. The jeep ran fine around town, but on the freeway it really struggled to get up to speed and had no passing power and my top speed was 90km per hour.
Yeah sounds like you had a different problem mine did it in town on highway basically whenever it wanted to LOL. But glad to hear you found the problem, nothing worse than having a vehicle fail on you.
I hope this is the issue I just began having. I was thinking it had something to do with the heat but I never had any issues with overheating before. I was on the freeway and when I tried to go around slower traffic and gave it the gas it was like somebody tossed out an anchor and I thought I was going to lose all power so I pulled over. Not knowing what had happened I checked under the hood and everything seemed fine. No Check Engine Light so no code to look up. Got back on the road and it seemed to just not have any guts, babied it a little bit and it eventually came back to normal. Happened twice so far so I'm going to replace this sensor and see what happens. Thanks for the video.
Did it solve your problem? I've been having the same issue. Feels like the ABS/VSC system kicks in or the engine shuts off or something when I go to accelerate. It's pretty bad bc I do alot of highway driving. Mine is a '14 on 35s with 78k. Thanks.
@@marcsciarrotta3109 It did cure the issue at that time but it's back again. I just bought another CPS and will be replacing it this weekend. If it does, I think I'll buy another to keep in the glove box. BTW mine is a 2015 JKU Rubicon on 37's and 55k miles.
i actually keep these extra sensors in my jeep, i have a crankshaft one, camshaft and extra speed sensors just in case, but i havent had any issues with mine, and she is at 104000 miles and drives stong.
I miss diagnosed a vw jetta and I changed the crank sensor and it gained more power too. From my experience i always thought the crank sensor ether works or doesn't now i became a believer. And it still doesn't make sense.
Agreed, maybe it has something to do with this style sensor. All the sensors I've changed in the past just straight up failed but they were also on the outside of the engine.
@@matthew9826 the only thing I remember when I changed it the plug on the outside was soaked in oil and I cleaned it before I installed the new crank sensor. Maybe that also had to do something with it.
I hope that's my issue! I have had the jerking issue when accelerating. But recently, it will lose power and throw a tc and engine light if I give her the beans...
My 2012 Jeep just recently started shutting off at idles and idk what the issue could be. Just did this and hopefully we'll be back on the road today and that fixes it. Regardless the sensor looked old and beat up so it needed to be changed
I'm not sure what you mean by hesitation but it sounds similar to what I am experiencing. On my jeep, it will run fine but then out of nowhere, while driving, the lights on the instrument panel will turn on as if I were just turning on the jeep, there's some loss in engine power, and everything will clear out within a second. there are no error codes either. I thought it was probably an electrical issue but the stereo isn't affected when this happens.
@@matthew9826 I think I found what was wrong. the wiring to the battery was super loose. I thought it was supposed to be that way but apparently not, so I tighten things up and hopefully it doesn't happen again. fingers crossed!
Thanks for this. I was just wondering if I needed to unload mine due to this intermittent issue. My daughter wants to take the Jeep to college in the fall and I don't want to send her in something unreliable
It never broke down on me. As for reliability, it was just more of a annoyance, but if you replace that sensor you should be good for at least a couple years or more nothing's made to last anymore unfortunately.
I have a '13 JK and haven't had that problem, but I used to have a 5 speed Ford Focus (it was a good little car) that had that "hiccup". I wonder if this was the problem. We'll never know. Question: should I bother to change this sensor if I don't have the problem in my Jeep? Or, do you think it's only a matter of time? I'm approaching 90k miles. Great video.
If you're not having any issues right now, I wouldn't worry about it; you probably just got lucky with a good sensor. However, if you start feeling hiccups once-a-month, yeah, go ahead and change it out before it turns into a headache.
@@ang2702per Probably not, sounds like an oxygen sensor issue. But if you've tried replacing that already it probably wouldn't hurt trying this sensor as well. Who knows, maybe it's freaking the PCM out.
I have an issue on a child start. When placing my on the brake and shifting from park to reverse I will get hesitation with it occasionally stalling. Once the Jeep is up to temp, I don't have any issues.
@Mark Deluisi yeah that kind of does sound like the torque converter, but the part I was talking about only costs around 20 bucks. I'd go ahead and give that a shot. Maybe it'll fix your problem, and if not, it was only twenty bucks.
Changed mine and it's still doing it. Camshaft, crankshaft, throttle body, plugs, wires, coil pack, maf, and I'm still having rpm surge and bogging. Maybe it's the o2 sensors or fuel pump.
You mentioned wires. I thought this was coil to plug, what wires did you change? I know my friend had a wire harness issue but he caused it by getting one of the fuel injection wires pinched when he put his throttle body back on. But he also had a check engine light to help him figure it out.
Hopefully thats what my issue is, i have ordered the part and just waiting now. Only had just done 60,000Kms started about a 1.5years ago when in crusie control and it cancelled out of it and showed the red lighting bolt and would surge forward under its own power on throttle. No engine codes ever. Pulled over did the google mechanic thing and did the throttle peddle reset and drove on. Didnt saw the issue again untill 6months, same issue fixed it with peddle reset. Then became monthly and then once ever week and became daily thing at which point i removed the i-drive unit to peddle and same results if anything i dont have to do the peddle reset as it just clears when engine is powered off and back on again.Jeep starts fine and drive it, as soon as it has load on engine or steep incline it will throw the red lighting bolt and hesitate slightly i dont give it anymore load on engine and use the lower gear to get up hills at a slow speed. But yes is PIA so thought if better get this issue resolved before it stops all together.
@@matthew9826 I decided to put some time into my problem while waiting for my crank sensor. I discovered the issue in the end it was the pig tail loom that connects the factory harness to the throttle body "Only effects the Jeeps that have the Australian Sprintex super chargers as they supply a pigtail to extend the factory harness as its too short to reach the new location of the throttle body. Any way long story short, Pin 4 was badly oxidized and parted away when i pulled on the wire of that connector after discovering high resistance on pin 4 of the pig tail harness with my fluke voltmeter. So after repairing the harness my issues have completely gone. So now i will have a spare crank sensor when i receive it. Thanks again for your thread as you made me think when u said you had no other warning lights.
@@Icecream_Unicorns Awesome!!! glad to hear you figured it out. Also you might as well hang on to that sensor just in case you have that problem a lot of us are having, you never know it just might come in handy.
I Have the exact same issue but its really bad on the highway. I can apply gas and it'll just hit miss hit miss hit miss hesitate, etc until it down shifts, then it still acts up some. Pisses me off cause It just started after warranty expired and the JK only has 24k miles. Love the Jeep but hate the MOPAR BS. I changed my Crans position sensor and it did nothing. SO PISSED.
Sorry it didn't help. It could possibly be a cam position sensor as well. Hard to tell if you're not getting any check engine lights that would definitely be the better route so you can figure it out quicker.
So when you started pressing your pedal to accelerate, it would bog down a little and then pick back up? That’s what mine does, but not always, which is confusing.
Did anyone that fixed this issue with a new CPS have the dealer give them error codes PO171 and PO174? The symptoms sound very similar to what's going on with my daughter's 2014 wrangler, driving along and all of the sudden engine starts to shut down and acceleration is almost impossible. Additional symptom is slower than normal acceleration from a stop once jeep is up and running again. Unfortunately, dealer couldn't replicate the issue, yet it has happened again. Thank you in advance.
I replaced the crank Position sensor and did not fix my issue. Replaced the air temp sensor, MAP sensor, and that didn't fix it. Now, I want to clear the ECM of all codes including relearning all sensors. THAT's what I need to know. One technique on how to clear the ECM and have the engine relearn everything!! Any ideas that really work??
Is that the feeling i have, where i can be driving and it feels like it falls flat on it's face for a brief second? Been trying to figure it out, thought for sure it had something to do with the drive by wire system in it..
