Because of your video I bought and installed my JL 8.4 in less than 15minutes (watched your video twice before). Very easy since your explanation is great! THANK YOU!!
Couple things you didn’t touch on: 1. You can buy a new HVAC control panel from infotainment as well to regain the factory volume button. 2. When upgrading from the 5.0, you likely won’t have the GPS module, which you can also buy from infotainment and install yourself.
Huge relief, yeah the dealership tells you it’s outright impossible... I can’t wait to do this to my JL. I just wonder if I were to get the climate panel with the volume knob if it would work properly.
Great video, should have pointed out if youre upgrading from the base 5 inch radio to the 8.4 you need to instal the antenna for the NAV and XM. You can also upgrade the AC panel and regain your volume control knob.
I have bought used in the past and ended up with the wrong version and then had to track down the right one. Its cool to see one place that specializes in the swaps so you dont have to make the same mistakes as me.
FCA loves those lever connects, several in my Town & Country upper console for my tvs. How is the PT coming along? Thanks for the content despite having to handle twins.
Thanks man for asking about the twins....they are a handful at times but priceless. They pretty much dictate what free time we have which is almost none. The head on the PT is off and I am working on getting all the needed parts together so that I can continue filming the process. I appreciate you following the channel!
Awesome video very informative thank you. Question should I disconnect the negative terminal on the battery before installing my 8.4 radio from infotainment?. It was because of your video I got the radio. Thank again. Lee
I have a 2020 RAM... could I just yank my head unit from the RAM and buy the 8.4 bezel for my JL? I'd much rather put an aftermarket system in the RAM instead of the Jeep
Great video! I have a Jeep Wrangler JL Sport 4 door with the 5" screen, not the sport S which comes with the option of getting a 7'' screen from the factory. I wanted to upgrade to the 7'' screen. The dealership told me that they are not sure if this is compatible, so they didn't do the upgrade. Is this possible? Thanks for the great work in the channel.
Hello, thank you for your information. I have a 2019 Jeep Wlangler SAHARA vehicle, the language options are very limited in the multimedia system, I want to install the Turkish language option, what can I do?
I think the extra is the 8.4 got GPS incorporated along with some off road maps, I think, I have the 7' and I use my Google maps but I considering the 8.4 but it got even more expensive that it was before! hmm
Question: My 2018 JL does not have navigation in the stock radio, does the new 8" HMI you installed come with it or if you didn't have it to begin with you still won't have it?
Does upgrading to the 8.4 inch screen with pre programed Vin give you the ability to use the U connect app. I am missing that option for my jeep because I do not have the 8.4 inch screen.
Someone mentioned that they offer it as well so its worth checking into. I recommend heading over to their website to see about it. I just did as I was typing and they do. Its about $400 to add this and make it work.
I dont know yet......the best way will be to contact infotainment.com and see what they have to say. The issue is that the vehicle just launched and no one has had their hands on it to verify yet. I dont see why not but we just cant be 100% sure just yet. Thanks for asking and make sure to subscribe
It can be very unfriendly for sure and alot of trial and error which doesnt come cheap either. I recommend checking their site out to see what is avail for your vehicle.
Not sure what year charger you have, but here's installation for a 2017 - 2019 ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-_2mbmIDnEYE.html . Here's an install for the 2018 ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-V121C7h8f4k.html . Here's the radio itself tinyurl.com/y9smsl87 . Let us know if you have any questions.
Nav worked......was able to play around with it much to see what the other features were. Sorry about that. Thanks for asking and make sure to subscribe.
Can anyone tell me what the green or teal connector is for. 2021 Wrangler, upgraded from the 5" to the 8.4 using this video and it was a breeze, but I do not have a green/teal connector to connect to the tan input. Is it for Nav?
Depends if the 2016 came with that option. Double check with infotainment.com to be sure. They would know for sure. Thanks for watching and for the comment. Make sure to subscribe
Any idea offhand how deep of an aftermarket head unit I can fit in the dash... .my pioneer double din is roughly 7" deep 7"wide. I dont want their crappy system, I need to install my own. Your videos are great man.
Not at all. Its a stock radio and for something to void warranty it would have to be related. For example an issue with the speakers and your running an Pioneer radio.
Still need to get back to it. Been backed up with videos I need to get out in the mean time. Plus waiting on some parts such as a gasket set. Soon I hope!
Does the 7" and 8.4" head unit solve the issue of the radio coming on automatically and at volume level 15 every time the car is started? I hate this feature of the 5" radio head unit. It won't default to the last known state, like if it was using the media, or the radio was turned off. The only way not to have the radio blaring at you is to remember to turn the volume all the way down to 0 before shutting off the vehicle. The most annoying feature in the world! Why did FCA do this?? Other forums online talk about this, and no solution to the problem. Unless FCA were to release a firmware that modified this behavior. I would totally get this unit if it remembers the last known state and doesn't always default to radio ON with VOLUME set to level 15... The JL I have is a company vehicle, so I didn't have any choice in the matter, its what I got..
Nice job Dave. I recently had to replace my 8.4 in my 14' Ram 2500 because when I did a USB update it got stuck on "embedded air card." I was out of warranty by time so I checked a reputable eBay seller who had the same exact radio as mine with the same exact preloaded features and the 4 digit security code to that radio. I did the swap everything went well but to make a long story short, I had to pay $10.00 to transfer the XM radio service. Also, I no longer had navigation because the radio has a different identifier/air card and the navigation stays with the old radio. I called FCC and they were very helpful with providing me the codes for navigation activation. Just some food for thought! This package from infotainment is pretty slick!
Great video! We just got a new Jeep JT (Gladiator) with the 5" radio and asked the salesman about upgrading to the nav system. We were told it was impossible, to which I called BS. Glad this is available. Looks like a great Saturday afternoon project.
Jeffrey Johnson best thing I can recommend is to contact infotainment.com, they are the ones who will know everything you will need and what will and won’t work. They are the experts when it comes to this swap. Thanks for asking and make sure to subscribe
Q i have a 2021 Jeep Wrangler JL Sport (no power window or Locks) and was looking at getting this upgrade as well as a remote starter now the Dealer is asking for $580 to install a antenna and 2 key fobs do you know of a way I can install this my self ? they said the jeep has the option (Computer) of the remote start
Great video man, helped with all my questions in upgrading from a 7" to a 8.4. Thanks, very informative. Definitely a subscriber now from only watching your first RU-vid video.
Hey Dave. I had an issue with my 8.4 screen and replaced it. Now I have the oddomiter flashing because it is not configured. Can this only be fixed by the dealer? And will this cause more problems if I don't get it configured?
I got the volume control thing. But what about the radio on/off button? 7 and 8.4 also have the button on the climat control module. How do you turn the thing on and off?
Great video really considering upgrading in my new Rubicon. just not sure how much a difference the 8.4 is to the 7, wish I would have looked on the lot when buying. Also I found out that they will buy your old unit when you replace so if that is a decent deal I think I will do it.
is there a way to get a new cluster beneath the upgraded display to have a volume knob? like in the models with the technology package? or does that require extensive rewiring?
Joshua sthilaire I cant say for sure. Haven’t had the chance to try it myself to see if it’s possible yet. The am curious was you are. Thanks for asking and for watching. Make sure to subscribe
I would really like to know too. Just bought a JT with the 5.0 unconnect and I really want to upgrade but having no volume knob really is a dealbreaker for me.
Nice explanation about how everything works together. Computers need those modules to know what's going on. It's expensive to change something out. That is a great upgrade.
Thanks for the great video. However I do have a few questions: 1. Can I download and use the Jeep Trail Maps? That is one of the best features for the 8.1 but it didn't become available until recently. I don't mind paying extra for it but I want to make sure I can get them. 2. Does this 8.1 do over the air updates like one that was installed with the Wrangler? If so, is it using a connection from my phone or some sort of 4G/LTE connection? If it is using 4G/LTE do I need to take extra steps to register it onto a providers network? 3. Do you have to connect a GPS or Sirrius/XM antenna somewhere? From what I've read in the past, you have to do that to use those features. I'm still torn on whether to do this upgrade. As I stated earlier, I've got the 7" uConnect on my Wrangler, however the performance with Apple CarPlay has been pretty abysmal. Sometimes the navigation is way off. Sometimes the track advance button on the steering wheel doesn't work. Sometimes it doesn't show my playlists. etc., etc. I"m not 100% sure it's CarPlay or uConnect having these issues but Jeep customer care and my dealer have been pretty worthless in getting it fixed. I should also say that I don't have any issues with CarPlay when I hook it up to another car. I heard that Insane Audio and Alpine may be releasing direct replacement head units soon, so I may just wait for those.
Got my first Jeep Wrangler today and this video was my very first stop. Seriously, this should be the template for all instructional videos. Thank you, MCM!
Sounds like they arent familiar with the process and how its done. The issue will be finding out what sales codes will be needed to make it work. It can be trial and error. Otherwise not much I can tell you about getting them to take on the job. Not sure who you are talking to....maybe a service writer or service manager that hasnt done it before instead of a tech that has. We have to do it for add on Mopar items like integrated trailer brakes so it wouldnt be much different then that. Sorry they are giving you the run around.
Can't replace a radio without a main pain in the ass incase something goes wrong. Can you go back to the original radio without another pain in the ass?
That's great. I don't know why they have to make things so complicated and integrated into the thief system for a stupid radio. I no take everything away from the DIY.
After browsing the comments, I did not notice if this question was answered already, so I will ask it (again?): After upgrading, did you notice whether or not the Off-Road pages feature of the 8.4 was present? Also, great video, I liked and subscribed! Looking forward to browsing your channel.
Good question.....I dont know for sure. Best people to ask are great folks over at infotainment.com.....they are the experts on this and will be able to get you that answer for sure. Thanks for asking and for having subscribe Robert! Its much appreciated
Not that I know of. To be 100% sure I would recommend contacting infotainment.com, they would know for sure and tell you if anything special is needed. Thanks for asking and for watching
Great video! Just subscribed!...I have a 2012 charger, if i buy the 8.4 radio. Would i get the psg o the camera? Even tho the vehicle didnt come with gps or backup camera .
I recommend contacting infotainment.com.......call them up and talk to them. They will be able to tell you everything that you might need to make it all work. Appreciate you watching and make sure to subscribe
Not sure if it can be done.....I recommend checking with Infotainment.com first to see if they offer anything yet. They are the go to source for swaps like that.
I dont have access to that radio unless someone wants to send me one to try out lol. I personally like the OEM look of the stock radios....they look part of the dash. All the aftermarket radios stick out like a sore thumb....not sure why they dont all go to a flat touch screen with no buttons.......it would be simpler and look the same as OEM.
It falls into a grey area. If their screen doesnt show one they always say no it cant but its the aftermarket companies or people that try it that find out if it really can or cant. Thanks for watching Mark and make sure to subscribe.
Another great vid Dave. This is why I enjoy your channel so much. You clearly explain the reason you follow certain procedures, and guide the viewer thru other secondary procedures that are usually overlooked by the home mechanic.👍👍
if I change my 5in radio to an 8.4, is it possible to also buy the control panel to have volume and split climate control options? awesome video by the way!
Not sure....its something I would have to try swapping to see if it will work. It falls into that "grey area".....there is no documentation saying it will work or not until someone tries it. Thanks for the feedback about the video.
Question here when you switch to a 5 inch to a 8.4 inch. It looks like it takes the power button and the screen off button. Is there any way to power off the radio when the car is on or is there a screen off button on the radio itself? Say your night driving and you can't turn off that bright light when you would like to.
Just found this message. I have never responded to you as of yet so not sure what or who said "Brilliant thanks" or "watch more". None the less when it comes to this radio and the features I recommend calling or emailing infotainment.com and ask them. Its their creation and if anyone would know, they would.
Hi David. I’m also David. Great video with detailed steps! Question: I was given a 7” radio by a fellow keeper who upgraded his. I have the 5”. How can I get the anti-theft code and program it to my Jeep without a major fee? Thanks!
That video was very helpful for people who want to upgrade their sound system and backup camera. Also the info on programming to the build of the car is helpful. Do most of the late models have fuel pump control modules that that have to be programmed? If so, do u have to have the Mopar subscription?
Newer ones do have fuel pump modules instead of the relay in the fuse box. I haven't heard of it being programmable....then again I haven't had any real issues with one yet.
