BUY, LEASE OR FINANCE A JEEP WRANGLER FROM OSV: bit.ly/2P7nnYJ
If you thought Jeep's Wrangler was strictly for Californian rock hoppers and D-list boy band members, think again. The latest 'JL'-series fourth generation model adds new engines and has smarter looks.
The Jeep Wrangler is one of the most iconic serious SUVs on the planet and has never been a car to shy away from even the toughest off-road conditions. Now, there's a new fourth generation 'JL'-series version, which takes a completely fresh approach beneath the bonnet, introduces modern safety standards and features a redesigned interior. It's still very much a Wrangler though.
Background
A bit of history first. Shortly after the surface of the earth cooled, vertebrates appeared, developed into dinosaurs and then died for reasons still not fully understood. Shortly thereafter, the Willys Jeep was built and spawned countless generations of Wrangler models, first driven by cigar-chomping beefcakes in aviator sunglasses who hadn't realised World War II had ended. Unfortunately, the brand image suffered a terrible knock in the mid Eighties when boy band Bros chose the Wrangler as their vehicle of choice.
Bear with me, we're nearly there. Realising that the Wrangler just didn't cut it in an increasingly sophisticated world, Jeep subjected it to major surgery, creating the 'TJ' series model in 1997. This sold until the launch of the 'JK' series design in 2006, which was replaced by the current 'JL'-series fourth generation model in 2018. With the 'JL', the challenge for Jeep was to modernise the vehicle without alienating the long term fans of the marque. The first step was to make sure it rode a whole lot better than its predecessor (which wasn't too difficult). Since then, the brand has concentrated on gradually enhancing powertrain refinement and efficiency. Having done so, the company has tweaked the exterior looks, creating the MK4 model we're going to look at here.
Driving Experience
Just about the only way we can describe the ride of pre-2007-era Wrangler models to the uninitiated is to imagine being stricken with a rather severe case of haemorrhoids and then being superglued to a spacehopper. Perhaps that's a tad harsh but after the novelty of an old Wrangler's bouncy ride had worn off, you were left with a vehicle that could crawl through deep mud but which wasn't much good at anything else. With the current 'JK' eries car, things certainly improved - if not dramatically then, at least, unequivocally. This design is much quieter than its predecessors too, thanks to beefed up insulation from engine and road noise.
There's a choice of two engines - a 2.2-litre Multijet II diesel with 200hp and 450Nm of torque. And a 2.0-litre turbo petrol unit with 265hp and 400Nm of torque. Both are mated to 8-speed auto transmission. Sadly, the rorty 3.6-litre V6 Pentastar petrol unit is no longer offered to European markets. There are now two active, on-demand full time 4WD systems - known as 'Command-Trac' and 'Rock-Trac'. These use next-generation Dana axles, Tru-Lock electric front and rear-axle lockers, a Trac-Lok limited-slip differential and an electronic front sway-bar disconnect system.
Whichever engine you go for, the Wrangler is still brilliant off road, with its super aggressive approach and departure angles. Opt for the entry-level Sport or Sahara trims and the car comes with clever brake lock differentials. In the two-door short wheelbase line-up, the range-topping Rubicon model gets even more specialist front and rear locking differentials. On road manners feel safe and predictable, if a little slow-witted, but there are decent levels of grip and, on broken or rutted surfaces, the handling is no longer stymied by a bouncy ride.
Design and Build
Changes to this Wrangler's looks include small styling changes to the instantly recognizable keystone-shaped grille, iconic round headlamps and square tail lamps. Plus there are improved aerodynamics and Jeep promises a convenient fold-down windscreen for off-road purists, even more open-air freedom and dozens of different door, top and windscreen combinations. Quite a lot though, hasn't changed at all. The
trapezoidal wheel arches, the external door hinges and the rubber bonnet catches are all present and correct, so the Wrangler still looks properly butch. The cabin is pretty spacious in all dimensions and a fold and tumble feature for the rear seat virtually doubles the available cargo capacity, while the curved glass windscreen reduces drag and helps refinement.
On the inside, the cabin is actually a lot more car-like that you expect it might be, with decently smart surfaces, a neat instrument panel, plenty of storage areas and an intuitive switchgear layout. Heated, power mirrors are optional and rearward visibility is aided by large rear windows.

as I am an American I enjoyed this reviewer, I bought the 2019 Jeep Wrangler Sport S with cloth seats-reason leather seats will burn your butt sitting in the sun with the top off-automatic is a well worth option-and don't let the gas mileage get to you it is and never has been a great gas saver, but if you want that buy a Prius- The new JL is pretty good until you start lifting it and bigger tires as any vehicle; I have a 2015 Jaguar XF and have had no trouble with it, so all vehicles have issues take the good with the bad, anything man made does fail at some point. Just keep in mind a Wrangler is a good bit of fun. As much as I like the land rover you just can't take the roof off and in America it's more expensive than the Jeep as well as the G-wagon. Hope this helps.

A proper car review. Thank you! I own a 2dr Jk that I use daily to/from town. My wife drives an older Land cruiser lc5 (with 7 seats and high spec) that cost me 50k brand new. Today , after 10 years of ownership, it will still fetch over 20k and has never had a fault. This JL looks a good car in Rubicon guise, but only makes sense in 2dr/SWB form. I will definitely upgrade the JK to this one. As for the JL 4dr vs Land cruiser, there is no comparison - the LC5 is THE ROLLS ROYCE amongst proper off roaders - the residuals do not lie (I could buy a 6/7 year old £90k RangeRover Autobiography for less than I would get for my 10 year old LC5!). Keep up the great work.

The curious ripped panels mentioned (located on the back of the driver and passenger seat) are in fact a MOLLE system. For people like me that spent many years in the armed forces, the term is familiar. You might have seen this system on bags, backpacks etc. This is nice because you can buy a lot of pouches, flashlight holder, emg stuff, first aid etc. that you can now attach to the MOLLE behind the seat of course with the usual struggle. But once installed, it hardly ever falls off. I love your video and thought I might add this comment to explain what these weird looking stripe thingies are...

RL. And the side vents are to let engine heat out. USA gets three maybe four engine choices and four models, the cheapest being a sport with steel wheels.. We (Australia) get the 2.2 diesel from the Alpha Stelvio (are they any good? The old VM wasn’t that great) and 3.6 Pentastar and three models but not the cheapest the USA gets, here we’re paining $80,000 AUD for the Rubicon and what we call the “Overland” which has leather interior, the Sport has vinyl. Not cheap anywhere but the USA. Are they reliable over time? FCA here aren’t known for customer service either... The JK’s that came with a hard top also came with the soft one albeit in a bag.

Good comprehensive video. A few questions: Does this model include a roll cage within the main structure? If the jeep rolled, would the body crush, or has there been improved strength in the body that is effectively an incorporated roll cage? Does this model come with a fixed sold steel body with opening sun roof rather than removable hard tops - similar to a land rover defender rear body? Can the wheels and tires be changed for the 37" with the 5" lift and upgraded suspension for the trails? thanks

I have driven, on roads and off, both manual and automatic Jeeps and my vote is to go with the automatic! Far less worries, especially when one is off-roading and one wants/needs his attention concentrated on the trail conditions ahead. Surprisingly, new(er) Jeeps with automatic transmissions get better (though negligibly so) gas mileage. Good luck with whatever you decide on...you will not be disappointed. Keep on Jeeping!

A number of factual errors in this video. Two glaring ones: 1. Side vents next to front wheels are functional. At speed, it disperses heat from engine bay, reducing heat buildup. 2. Top speed is limited due to tire rating, not window rake. Not that you’d want to be driving that fast in a brick anyway.

Rubi all day long....simply put, no other “suv” compares, period. Rubi is a purpose built beast....so the only question is, what is YOUR purpose?
@phantomwalker8251
@phantomwalker8251 5 лет назад
jeep,should only build the rubi,in petrol,or diesel.no other variants..why would you want anything else..cummins has the 2.8tdi,& a 5lt v8 tdi.they should fit that to the rubi,sales would be out past pluto...

I have the 2018 Jeep JL 4-door Sport. I'm not doing actual 'rock-crawling', just everyday driving with an occasion on the beach or snow. I've tried to get it stuck (without driving it off a cliff), and had a very difficult time doing so (with stock tires and no lift).
@sallutz
@sallutz 5 лет назад
Micah Harford nothing wrong with that brother. I have a 2019 rubi 2dr, and I drive it on CA highways to and from work during the week. Other than that, we’ll be taking it up to the snow in the winter, and I’ll be using it out on the trail whenever I have time....but no major rock crawling planned. To each his own. Love the Jeep, and that’s MY purpose for having one. 🤘🏻👍🏻 🇺🇸

yes, it is. Also, it blinks when when someone drives up the historical blind-spot.

Great video. Very informative. Over fifty minutes long though. ...50 min long dude. I would have broke this up into three separate videos. 50 minutes is a stretch.

How is it safety score?
@OsvUkVehicleSupply

It got a 1 star from EuroNCAP which is pretty horrendous. If safety is a priority this vehicles not for you 👍
@simonatkins6402
@simonatkins6402 3 года назад
@@OsvUkVehicleSupply I don't understand that score... Is it because the base model lacks some of the safety features of the higher spec models? Especially if you opt for the reasonably priced safety pack (which admittedly should be standard) then most safety concerns seem to be covered and most of the main modern safety technology is included. One star therefore seems ridiculous and very unfair to me, Curtain airbags I imagine couldn't be included in a car which is capable of having its doors removed !

Much roof confusion with this reviewer.The jeep truck is a available in the USA yet the UK lacks pictures of it. He showed a concept or aftermarket jk truck.

Toyota fans need to go to their Toyota sites and stay there. Wranglers are better off road vehicles period. Rubicons rule.

It's good and maybe the best in 2019, but after 200 000 miles, don't tell me it's better than a Land Cruiser lol

Edgar Ben Joseph The Strongest 4x4 is the old Land Rover. Nowadays Mercedes G wagon is the best. You can stick in the back two land cruiser and drift them easy!!!! There is a video as well in desert that Mercedes G wagon outperform Toyota Land Cruiser. Regarding the Jeep one is good if you are not using highway roads.

The 4 door Wrangler showed up on Consumer Reports 'most complaints' list a couple of years ago. My biggest complaint was my knees always banged into the lower dash and it hurt when off road.

in EU and countries connected to EU, the "steel" bumbers are not allowed to be sold as part of a vehicle from a dealership, but the car owner can purchase one himself and pay for the installation or install it him/herself.
