Jeep Wrangler TJ Maintenance - Inner Axle Seal, Diff Fluid Service, Oil Change

It's time for some spring cleaning for the TJ. Needed to service my front and rear diffs, do an oil change, rotate my tires, and fix my leaky inner axle seal. I usually do all of this maintenance myself, but have never attempted an inner axle seal. Figured it out and saved about $350 doing it myself. Feel free to leave any questions or comments below!

One of the smartest things I have ever seen putting the tires under the jeep!!! Never seen that before but it could save your life if you had cadustrfic failure. AWESOME!!

I need to do the rear axle seals on my 99 sport and I wish I had other friends nearby to help me. This video gives me some confidence but being that it is my daily, i’m still not confident enough to do it! I may buy all the parts for the job and get there like I was for changing the trans/diff/transfer case oil. Great videos man! You’re a great help for inexperienced guys like me.

Thanks for the vid...very interesting pointers. I have an 2001 tj sport and like doing my own work but, will only take it so far in fear of screwing something up. I appreciate channels like Arkansas Offroad being out there.

Nice job. Imagine all the money shops make when you have work done on the diff. They make it sound like it's brain surgery. Here's a tip on those fuel cleaner/additives(other than seafoam); they're nothing more than kerosene. I add about a pint of kerosene to a tank of gas every now and then. My '02 TJ runs great with it.

Fuel injector cleaner definitely works and is great to use regularly to maintain a nice mist from the injectors. It works best if you use when you're low on fuel so it's more concentrated. I drop in two bottles of Seafoam every once in a while when I'm under 1/4 tank. Using good gas like Chevron which has some cleaners built into it helps out too. Also, Seafoam you can put into your oil before you plan to do an oil change. 1 oz per qt of oil and it'll clean things up and quiet stuff down as you drive.

For years I thought he had lockers on the old TJ too! I JUST TODAY found out that he did not and after seeing all the camping and exploring (same level of stuff I want to do with my TJ) I feel better about it. Makes me re-assess my budget and breathe a little easier knowing the Jeep is still capable without them.

couldnt help but notice,i have same wheels as you do.So my question is what type and where did you get the longer lug nits ?It is so hard for mr to put my wheels back on because the nuts are recessed so far back in wheel.Did you put in longer studs to be able to get nut on easier or just longer nuts? I almost dropped my coffee When ya said your shop was going to charge about 3400 - that's a new axle(or a bunch a fancy Milwaukee tools)..wtf.. and ya did it in a day...or less. Good work. You don't have no problem without having lockers? I'm only asking because I'm going to get gears soon. Figured I'd go ahead and put in lockers too

daniel smith Only reason I don’t have lockers is because I’m running stock axles. Locking the D35 on 35’s is way to dangerous. Did that on purpose.

Logan Akers it’s a bearing driver kit. You can rent one for free at any local parts store. Pushed the new one in by putting the old seal on the driver kit and tapped it in place.

did your front brake calipers stick after you painted the surface they slide on with POR 15?

I just painted the knuckle. No surface that slides or has any friction.

The pads are slotted and rest on the knuckle and slide back and forth. If the surface is not smooth they stick.

Not super knowledgeable about working on diffs, but shouldn't you be concerned about messing up your backlash and shims and such? I know not all diffs are designed the same but I didn't think you could just pop out the carrier and pop it back in without at least checking some measurements. I could be totally mistaken, anybody know for sure?
