This is, quite literally, the best guitar playing I've ever seen, including by Jimi, Jimmy, anyone. Jeff is a true musical genius. May he live long, stay healthy and thrill his millions of fans for many more years.
I've been going to Jeff Beck concerts since 1968 I continue to go every chance I get becuz he is the most original and innovative guitarist in the world!
I have been following JB's guitar work for the past 40 years. There are many great guitarists, and I have great respect for and love to hear Luke, Vai, Carlos, Clapton, Page, Joe, Jimi. I have to say, however, that Beck is a master of the instrument in a way that none other has come close. If you asked other guitarists, whomever they might be, who would they be most intimidated to play with on stage, and I would bet that a general consensus would be: Jeff Beck.
I've been listening to JB for over 40 years, and this is, in my opinion, the best example of his proficiency. I met him a few years ago in Houston, after the best concert I've ever seen. My sister in law, who hadn't even heard of him, came and actually cried at the concert. I've played guitar for almost 45 years, and I've never seen such ultimate comfort and familiarity with his instrument as he has in this video. This man knows what he's doing.
I've watched this clip hundreds of times. Jeff Beck is BY FAR , THE GREATEST ELECTRIC GUITARIST OF ALL TIMES. I've listened to ,and enjoyed, Everything from Chet Atkins and Les Paul,Django, to Frank Zappa,Hendrix,Blackmore,Steve Howe,Satriani , Vai ,Buckethead,(Big fan of Tony Iommi )and Leslie West can bring tears to my eyes, But Jeff Is THE KING
i can't stop listen to this track...his guitar is talking to me in italy to you in england,to everyone everywhere...and you don't need any language, music is universal...just close your eyes and you understand...
Hands down Mr. Beck rates as one the best rock blues guitarist in the world. The man talks to you from his heart and soul with his guitar and takes you on great musical journey. He is a musician's musician. Thank you Jeff for all the joy you have brought to us through the years. You get better and better as time moves on.
Jeff Beck is probably the finest player out there, period. The emotion that he wrings from his guitar grabs you, together with his total command of it. When I first saw this on TV, it left me in tears. There are few players that can do that.
Beck's a loner in the music world but what he does..he does incredibly well. I don't think anyone even attempts this style of playing. He's truly in a league of his own.
JB, is the complete Stratocaster master! His touch, dynamics, feel, tone, and mechanical mastery are solefully superb. His adduction the centre plane of his guitar in musical space and time is second to none in the this song example. My arm hairs stood on end, Bravo!!
Speaking as a highly educated and experienced classical composer (wink wink) , who grew up playing blues, this shit is AMAZING! He is so creative, so soulful...He has been such an influence on me, since I was 15.
Jeff is the ultimate expressionist on any instrument, that's what separates him from the rest of us. His ability to precisely express his feeling through his instrument is something that he is just best at. He has a lot to say, and always the perfect way to say it, or convey it. Pure emotive connection. Rock on, Brother Beck!!
Let's be fair Van Halen sounds awesome. "Shredding" often sounds great when in even good hands but it takes someone as good as this to show you what real playing is about.
My fav bit is at the end where the sax player applauds Jeff. We think its fanstasic, but a fellow musician really knows what he has just witnessed. Pure genius.
Glad you finaly "got" him. I have followed him for all his carreer. and he never stops amazing me and still continues to advance. He is unique and there is no one like him. I am 64 and he is 68 and still blowing everyone away. I have played lead guitar for MANY years so I know waht I am talking about. Thanks for you post.
No kidding! I've seen Page, Clapton, and many other players over the years. Beck remains one of my top 3 because he keeps evolving, has techniques that are all his own, and is ALWAYS melodic, no matte what he does. Too bad he's never achieved wider recognition.
The guitar hero's guitar hero. My dad was friends with him and did studio time with him in the 70's and 80's, and almost ended up selling our hagstrom swede to him, but if Jeff Beck falls in love with your guitar, you keep it, because if its good enough for Jeff, its good enough for anyone. Met him a couple of times, very young though. Hes the reason i leared guitar and started writing music. This man is the guitar heros guitar hero.
Out-(expletive)-standing. This made me want to stand up and cheer! That is how great a guitar should be played. Deliberate, purposeful, powerful, and full of meaning! Not "Hey, I'm a great guitar player. Listen to my 3 minute solo." This was simply fantastic! P.S. Can you imagine what Simon's response to this performance would be if Beck did this on "American Idol"?
Wohhh... Jeff makes us fly high... Like a pilot flying his ship !!! ... One of his best performances (everyone seems to be the best). We love you Jeff !!!
the best thing about watching or listening to a Jeff Beck version of anything is YOU never know which way he is going to go with it until you here it and then all you can do is gasp and say " hmmmm i never saw it coming" got to love it. the unpredicatability of beck is the magic... well for me it is.. anyway thanks for posting this..appreciate it :)
I love he can makes it sound so simple-the way he takes his time and doesn't speed through or hammer every riff to shreds. Yet , he is so imaginative and you never hear him play the same set of notes the same way twice, a true genius, simply the best guitarist out there.
Beck es un genio del sonido, el no sabe que toca una guitarra, de hecho no le importa que instrumento tiene en las manos, saca sonidos que nadie jamas logrará. Ha sido mi guitarrista preferido de toda la vida, nadie como el.
When I first listened to Jeff Beck, I didn't "get" him. I don't know if it was the song I listened to (don't know what it was), or I just didn't understand his style, but after a few years, I listened to him again, and he blew me away. Once again, I don't know what caused it, if it was his amazing ability, his emotion, or what have you, but he now is one of my favorite guitarists. Watching a video of him from 20 years ago, to now, there is such a huge gap in his ability that it's astonishing
I dont see how you CAN'T like this video. Probably one of the best if not THEE best rendition of this song to date. So clearly the 70 ppl who disliked it DONT LIKE REAL MUSIC..
holy crap- that harmonic pull up at 1:43 to 1:49 is spine chilling/shaking awesome! this is the best blues guitar I have ever, ever, ever, ever, ever heard- I'v been playing strats for 40 years, seen JB several times but I just ran into this video, this guy is good for the guitar industry in general, most people have no idea how many guitarists JB influences- I have to get better amps- tone baby, I might have died of a heart attack if I was watching this live;-)
In my opinion Jeff is the best I seen him in concert its much better seeing him on screen where you can see everything he's doing. It is absolutely amazing all the things he's doing at the same time and controls all the notes.Really beautiful stuff! I'd give anything to play with him once!
I was there also seeing Beck here in LA and it was awesome! Another reminder to those of you who take high-volume rock playing for granted--Beck was among the first to master it enough to make it into an unheard-of-at the time full career that we take so much for granted today. We were in an era of Chuck Berry and the Beatles at the time playing WOUND 3rd strings...
just saw him about two weeks ago! 3rd time... Always a GREAT show! and he is always pushing into new areas with his technique and style... one of a kind!!!
You are sooooo right! It's always from the heart & soul with Jeff. And what a mind! His imagination & creativity is his strength & what keeps him light years ahead of all the rest.
i always think of Jeff Beck as a Mad Scientist in a laboratory, always trying new things and making absolute beautiful sounds from an instrument that no one else has figured out how to do it like him.. Rock On Jeff :)
Astonishing isn't he? I got into JB back in the 70's when I first heard 'Blow by Blow'. Outstanding album. BTW, the 'Tambourine' player is Ray Cooper . He worked with Elton John for years, as well as Clapton and many, many others... Thanks for posting
you know guys, it doesnt matter if you only use pentatonics, the important thing is you use it BEAUTIFULY, MUSICALY, WITH LOTS OF HEART AND SOUL LIKE MR. BECK CAN DO! there's no contest with him bcoz jeff beck write music more than 30 years and he's still making /playing music to the world! if you dont like him, very simple, dont listen! jeff beck is a musician i like to listen to! cheers!!
There are the most amazing little things in here- F'ing amazing passion, soul & feel in some of those licks, not the lick, but the way it is played- that overtone harmonic with the pull up made my month, just that 4 second clip- tone baby, tone!
I started listening to Beck back in the 60's with the Yardbirds. We were saying "Oh My God" back then too. And then he really got good!!! Very unique style. Pluck the string once and see how many sounds you can squeeze out. The guy is an amazing guitarist!
As an aside to my other comments here I'll add this. Besides being a mind blowing guitarist, Beck is as loud or probably louder than anything you've ever heard in your life. I'm a New Yorker and went to a concert of his in The Garden. The streets with the bustle and the traffic in mid town Manhattan are loud yet as I was walking to the concert, late, I might add, I heard him playing from INSIDE The Garden out on the street 6 blocks away. When I got inside it was like another planet!
it is amazing to think about how many years you have to play to even KNOW that it is possible to get these sounds out of a guitar. and then to MASTER each of them...and then to know EXACTLY where to drop each one so its not over- or underdone. and to do it in a blues song - a structure that everyone knows and can judge. I have seen Him (caps intended) a few times, and not everything works every time he does it, but his balls are SO BIG for trying this stuff i am amazed he can find pants to fit.
What a way to drown in your own TEARS. Such sweet sorrow. :-) Tears and empowerment what a combination. Let us just ascend right now, I am ready. Peace and Love to all. TO those we care about may they feel the LOVE flowing from Jeff's beautiful artistic hands. :-)
Tasteful, technical and soulful. You can work a lifetime for any of those qualities in playing an instrument. Rarely does one write the book on all three.
