Retrospective look at the life and work of Jeff Buckley, marking the 5th anniversary of the American musician's premature death at the age of 30. Contains rare archive footage of Jeff in both interviews and performances, as well as clips from family members, friends, work associates, and celebrity fans. Other material includes early childhood photos, news reports on the drowning tragedy, and background on estranged father, Tim Buckley.
- Kay-22: www.imdb.com/t...
Jeff Buckley, a prodigiously talented guitarist and songwriter, drowned accidentally in 1997 at the age of 30.
Actor Brad Pitt, fellow musicians (Jimmy Page, Chrissie Hynde, Elizabeth Fraser, Patti Smith, among others) and Buckley's mother are among those contributing to this portrait of a cult performer who, with his 1994 album Grace, emerged as one of the most acclaimed, eclectic and original rock artists of recent times.

Grace is the only album I precisely remember where I was, what I was doing and who I was with the first time I heard it. I totally relate with what Brad Pitt's telling in this great documentary. I was with a bunch of friends for a dinner party, we were talking and joking around as usual. Suddenly I hear the intro of Mojo Pin flying in the air, I freezed out, asked my friend what is this music and ran in a quiet room to listen to the whole record alone. I was speechless for the rest of the evening and it changed me forever. I was lucky enough to see him live in Paris twice, and when he died, I cried like I lost a brother; Maybe the songs he never had time to compose are here somewhere, waiting to be made...

A major label deal is a devil’s bargain. For the label, it only works if sustained at a near impossible pace, or so they think. The more time that goes by out of the spotlight, the more discounted in dollar terms is their investment. I’m really impressed to see the rare patient label that knows it’s either the artist’s way or no way at all.

Also I’m asking because I saw that you replied to someone’s comment on one of the Toronto vids u posted, you said you posted an uncut version of something on Vimeo due to copyright?? @@somes3cretcat Cool. I live around the Don Mills area of Toronto, if you’re familiar. The video that you’re referring to is Jeff’s episode on the MuchMusic program, The NewMusic. When I originally uploaded that video to RU-vid, I had to cut roughly ten or fifteen seconds, due to copyright detection. The unedited version merely consists of those added seconds. Sadly, that’s all I’ve got.

@Nathan Wolfe It’s called, Back in N.Y.C. It’s a Genesis cover/demo that Jeff recorded with his 4-track recorder, shortly before he died. It can be found on Disc 2 of his posthumous album, Sketches for My Sweetheart the Drunk.

HOt take: IMO Jeff was surrounded by so many pretentious people trying to manufacture a "theme" or a construct for him to exist inl. And they weren't happy if he tried to deviate from that. Fraser is one of the worst. Just looking at her face and hearing her talk i get the feeling that this is the type of woman who would accept nothing less than a reincarnation of Tim. And her blinking and fertile but not pregnant pauses and her nodding head smack s of a person who has an expectation that everything will be as it is in her head. Jeff's life would have been filled with maneuvers and tactics on how to avoid being pigeonholed, how to outwit everyone and pre-empt every pretense. And this would have SUCKED ass for an artist who was just trying to create in an honest way and tap into a primordial vibration which might have incidentally carried his father along. But all these fake people hung up on appearance and determined to exploit every little nuance that echoed Tim. They were almost using Jeff as a talisman or a medium in order to conjure Tim's soul. Ive heard an innate darkness in Jeff's deep cuts that doesnt exist in Tim's music. The spirit of Tim's music was FREEDOM> The spirit of Jeff's music and life seemed to be that of torture, loneliness, innocence, and wit, cunning, calculation. Its an aroma u smell with some people. I feel like Jeff's nautral talent was hijacked. And the darkness and foreboding i hear in Jeffs music seems planted. And finally, that this doc is saying that this odd ritual in a church started Jeff's career. Im rubbing my chin and saying quietly to myself, who were all these people? Tim's music was FAR from mainstream and all these people claim to be such devoted fans. and yet very few of them even old enough to have had the chance to see him perform live. Who were these so called devoted fans of Tim....and what REALLY was this tribute? what was its purpose? what were all u people UP to? And what business would u truly have with this kid who supposedly needs a jumpstart to a career? I smell a hint of something untoward, wicked.

I never heard or understood the appeal. MOR music and singing. Definitely the kind of artist life and tragedy that appeals to Brits. It’s the same repetitive mythology we always get from the Tavistock music industry. Young people with real or imagined “genius,” struggling with emotions and/or substances, dying prematurely. It’s routine to the point of ritualistic (as in sacrificial lamb ritualistic). And then comes the real cash cow for the profiteers. No more living artist complaining about contracts and royalties. Only an eternity ahead as “Celluloid Heroes,”rereleases, documentaries like this one, Hollywood renditions, Spencer’s gift shop posters and Ts etc. It’s hard not to be cynical and deeply suspicious at some point.

@glicmathan1771 I’m sorry, but this comment betrays enormous ignorance. Calling Jeff ‘middle of the road’ is absurd. As the narrator says, “Grace stood out a mile.” No one during, nor after, Jeff’s time has ever sounded like him. I can’t think of a single musician that has ever lived who could pull off what Jeff did in his performance of Van Morrison’s, The Way Young Lovers Do (Live at Sin-e). Jeff’s talents were unparalleled. If you don’t believe me, then just read what some of the world’s most respected musicians had to say about him: en.wikiquote.org/wiki/Jeff_Buckley#About_Jeff_Buckley

I saw Jeff Buckley on 22nd June 1985 in the UK at the Junction, Cambridge. This was a warm up show ahead of his Glastonbury appearance. I remember how mesmerising he was as a person and as a musician. There was men and women openly crying as he played, never experienced that ever again in a gig. I am so lucky to have see him, iconic.

Glasto 1995, was the 25th anniversary year, the only time I've been to the festival,, and ever will. It was in my opinion, the greatest line-up of Glasto, period, and not least because Jeff Buckley played. Great memories.
