Mobile MLK Mardi Gras Parade 2020 Jefferson Davis High School Volunteers / Vols Marching Band 2020 Drummajor: Justin Heideman aka Vanilla Funk February 24, 2020 Mobile, AL @ShowtimeWeb #ShowtimeWeb
This is not a negative comment, but to all the people who say he doesn't deserve his spot, just look at how hard he is marching(stepping) compared to the rest of the boys. He got his spot bc he worked the hardest. There is no way in that a black school would just give the white boy that spot. My boy had to work for it.
Many of us don't see the color of racism. Those that assume we do are the true racists. It's not a color problem. It's a human perception problem that needs to change. Stop seeing ghosts where they don't exist. God made us all. Just leave it at that. God bless 🙏❤️🙏
And the reason why he’s one of the DMs for the Alabama State University Marching Hornets 🐝 for the past 3 years. Can’t walk into that position without qualifications.
Listen, I've replayed to watch each of them, just to make sure it's not because of the camera focused on him. He goes harder on his moves compared to the others. He worked for his spot for sure
"I have a dream that my four little children will one day live in a nation where they will not be judged by the color of their skin but by the content of their character." -- M.L. King
I am not surprised one bit how Justin was being cheered for and encouraged! Us folk are the most welcoming and inviting of all races!! We love to welcome folk to the party. I just wish it the same for us to be welcomed by all!
Honestly the black community is so welcoming and encouraging. I feel very fortunate that I grew up surrounded by all kinds of people different than myself. If only these beautiful aspects of black culture were more visible instead of reinforcing bullshit sterotypes.
See and those two people are listening to that reinforce bullshxt that they see on the internet, probably have not met black people and if they have, they met the minority. Black people are not the most racist race on the planet so gtfo, we love to welcome new people and teach them our culture simply because we like having new people interested in us outside of stereotype.
@bad Good then thats very unfortunate but most of us are fxcking not like the people your life, so don't say that like you know all black people, you dick.
@gray73 "I LiVe iN OnE...." one, single not fxcking plural asshole. So until you venture out to other black communities you dont know shxt about the rest of us, again very unfortunate but most of us are not fxcking like that, stop trying to catagorize us based off the MINORITY OF PEOPLE YOU HAVE UNFORTUNATELY MET. Plz and thank you 😁
Yes!! Major props to their music director. Clearly he or she either attended an HBCU or is a super fan...LoL!! I love it! And props to these young men and women for their dedication. You don't become this good over night
I used to be in marching band in high school, my band and the drill squad won awards on the regular. too bad when that year i graduated and the band director retired it isn't the same any more. We used to put on crazy shows like this
This kid is taking this thing serious!!He has a tremendous responsibility leading an all black band,he has no room for error and trust me he's holding it Down💪I feel honored 👍Go Vanilla Funk!😜 Awesome band! Awesome Drum majors!!👏👏👏
.... AND remembering yor choreography AND making it look good AND the stamina for parades that go forever AND beig a leader at for the folks lokking to you for direction... Ah hmm... that was NOT me at 17
Miss me with the we have to overcome and be above reproach when it comes to whites, Asians, and anyone else claiming minority status. Paul Mooney said it best “everybody want to be black but no one wants to be black!
First, for a high school band, they sound fantastic, on par with some college bands. Honor should go to the band director for that. Secondly, you can see the level of discipline inherent in the way everyone moves and relate to each other. Third, all the drum majors are great and there is a cohesiveness among them. They move as one instead of any one person attempting to outdo the other. That comes from a mental mindset that they work together and not as separates. Finally, a leader DM must set the example. Justin Heidiman has earned that spot and should occupy it even if he’s polka-dotted. Now that WOULD draw comments!! Besides, the attention he unintentionally brought the band can only be good for them. They aren’t just another high school band anymore. They have gone viral. All in all, I say sit back and enjoy the show while it lasts!!
@@angelarubenstein4611 pol·ka-dot·ted /ˈpō(l)kəˌdädəd/ adjective (of a garment or fabric) having a number of round dots repeated to form a regular pattern. "a red polka-dotted dress" My reference was even if his color was round circles on a background if whatever color, he would still be as good.
ALL of the drum majors are excellent. Folks are just surprised to see a white guy as lead drum major (at a black school) and he's comfortable around us. I do love the entire JDHS band!
@@timtaylor4372 There are tons what the hell are you talking about! I was in high school in the late 80s, Between 10 and 15% were white students while 50% of the students were Black and the rest were Mexican, Asian and other! We were all just students stuck in High School! So stop spreading false information! This is what keeps the cycle going!
@@NeverEnoughPyro40I went to private school with 3 Black students. Our experiences are TOTALLY different! 😉 BTW, I graduated high school in 1975. I was in the USMC in 1979, so what the hell are you talking about. Listen to James Brown-Talking Loud and Saying Nothing.
These guys are fantastic! Marching is no joke! The Dancers, Flag girls and Drum Majors work hard as hell! As much as the Band itself! Their Parade Marching is aweome!
Baby Boy did not come to play! He's a good lead drum major and the chemistry between the four drum majors is captivating and exciting. Great audience!!
Love Jeff Davis Marching Band ..........love it ...much love from ...London England .....beautiful young laddies ....handsome young men .....Great band Thanks for lifting my spirits 💕
Love this band. Love how the black community is so accepting of Justin. I saw an interview with him on TV, and he seems so humble with all of the media about him, including the band in its entirety. I like the nickname he has been given "vanilla funk" ... lol
Who's the "EXTREMELY TALENTED" white kid??? Great rythmn, dance moves on point, confidence, strong presence, Excellent job young man. You're one of us!🌟
In 1986, dad took me to the MLK day parade. Being white and 13, I was kind of scared to go. Dad was a mechanic in the hood and was creole. He could easily pass for being black. The music and the bands were fantastic! It was a great time until the last float came. The guy threw a big box right at me. I thought it was a bunch of candy. I went to catch it and before I could, Dad grabbed me and moved me to the side. The box landed and exploded. It had a huge glass bottle in it that shattered. Everyone there was looking at me making sure I was OK and ran down the float and grabbed the dude off of it. I was shocked that those people looked after me like that. It changed my outlook on black people and forever changed my life. We left the parade in dads 69 Camaro blasting "the show" a Doug E Fresh song. It will forever be one of the fondest memories of my dad. He was later robbed and murdered in Mobile in 2013. R.I.P Daddy. I'll love you forever.
My hats off to the entire band. BEST high school marching band I ever seen. These kids are in Hella Shape.. marching in a parade & keeping that stamina up is amazing.
The discipline and ability of this whole team is amazing. The dance team has stepped up theirs routine and look great . The DM team is awesome to watch and they never seem to get tired.
I just love this kid and his passion for dancing!! I can see his love for all races of Color. Great job to his parents on Raising a beautiful son❤️❤️❤️
I was surprised to see Jefferson Davis at the parade. I've seen them on RU-vid. They were excellent. I love the drum majors but the band sound great. They sound like a college band.
As a veteran of marching in parades, during rainy season, in the south, I have to say that the endurance of EVERY SINGLE MEMBER OF THIS BAND IS AMAZING! There's absolutely NO WAY I would have been able to keep my trumpet chops sounding this 100% for this long (Had this trick where, after halfway in, we'd sometimes alternate every other member for every other song for long parades lol). Crowd response is also 100% the motivation. GREAT JOB, JDHS! 🤜🏽🤛🏽 👏👏❤️❤️
I recently went down a RU-vid hole of HBC marching bands and how fascinating the entire culture and structure in it. That being said, this band could compete against moat of them. I especially like the integration of the dancers with the drum majors.
There goes those amazing young people again! They're all so talented! Hard to believe this is a high school. Go'on young people with y'all bad selves.😍
These young men and women just make your heart smile!!!!! They are all so talented!!!! I watch them when I feel sad from being closed in the house so much!!!!! You make your school, your parents, your community so proud, without seeing color!!!! The way should all be! We are all Gods children.......we need to love one another, stand strong together and be proud of these beautiful students who have worked their hearts out!!!! Love from Indiana!!!!
Not sure why there would be any thumbs down. I thought that these kids did an excellent job. Maybe those people don't realize how much work goes into a marching season which starts well before school starts. Not too mention working those parades is also hard work. Excellent job kids. Would have loved to have seen your performance in a stadium, I bet it would be an awesome performance.
Love watching these young men and ladies. #PositiveVibes! Kudos to the Director(s), Administrators, Teachers, and especially the Parents / Guardians along with the Montgomery community for supporting them! GOD bless them ALL! Now, on to NEW ORLEANS! Show up and SHOW out Baybees!!! ❤️
Justin Heideman has so much talent. Wonder what the future holds for him. Can't wait to see what he does next. Onward to College. Band is a catapult for so many Student !!!!!
Damn! These kids have taken this to a whole other level! That kid Justin gets the crowd and band really worked up. I bet he doesn’t just get out of bed in the mornings, he jumps six feet in the air, lands and dances! And the band sounds sweeeet! Kudos to their leaders. Lots of pride!
I love how everyone loves and supports this amazing & talented group of young people! I love them too and don’t even know them, so I can only imagine the intense love their community has for them!❤️❤️❤️
You are right Fig, Love is all we need to heal the entire world not just here in the state, exercise like this brings people together from different race, culture and ways of life... We all have something to teach and educate each other. Ones life is for everyone's life and everyone's life for someone's life. Let Love lead.
I truly enjoy watching these young men & women! It's hard to believe they're high school students. I just hate I wasn't in my hometown (Mobile, AL) to witness it in person! Great Job! Keep Up the Good Work!
The School Pride is Beautiful to watch. Even the turn out of the community is Awesome...Rain or Shine, they're out there enjoying and supporting them. I love it! Loads of Love from NYC🤟
Nice to see more of the others. The girls are great and the band. How on earth all of them including the drum majors keep up the pace without mistakes. Amazing . I would love to see them in person. From Australia. Never get tired of watching of their videos.
I just want to see Justin's family tree....thats all 😂 This band is Amazing just to be a highschool band, the choreography, drummers, dancers, noones lacking in this band. I wish these talented kids nothing but blessings & much success, they deserve it 😘😍❤
I still find myself watching Vanilla Funk old high school band video's 4 years later and I still watch I have a lot of this highschool band video's download and to the camera men they need a raise job well done ✅💯👏🏾👏🏾
Kudos to the faculty and band director who make this a top notch program. The sound, the moves, the energy all looks like a college program. Justin is doing a great job leading, and the other drum majors are also phenomenal. These kids are putting on a better show than so many professionals. Good for them!
I enjoy the JD band very much. Great director. He brings the spirit. The students take over. Fun to watch and listen. And whatever ‘it’ is, JH has ‘it’. Wishing all Seniors much success.
I see a young man that didn't fallow the normal set in the air. He knew he had the talent, drive, and love for it. I was raised to accept everyone for the person not color. I love marching bands and where I live they are not big like other places. So I watch here. This band and others I see young men and women learning skills that will fallow them into their adult lifes. I am proud of every one who does it.
@@MrGrifter123 Just three graduated. They're all going to HBCU. The poor kid that's left behind has big shoes to fill next year. The four of them killed it this year!
I would love to see them here in Holland. To perform when the DCI starts again. Not this year, next year.. and with Justin, the DM.. my oh my.. THAT is something else..😍👍 That energie from the whole band... wauw, Just wow!
Sorry for the terminology and I don't mean any hate whatsoever but I must say this, THAT WHITE BOY BE ROCKIN! I know his name is Justin but I'm just sayin 🤣🥰
