How fantastic that now, in 2022 the WBC has finally put matters right and awarded Fenech the fight and the title. First time I have seen Fenech fight and what a champion he was!

Great fight, great hearts. Saw this live in 91 and thought it was all Fenech, but now I see it was closer than I thought then. Cheerleading for Fenech by the TV guys maybe influenced the impression I had. Not taking anything away from Fenech's energetic performance, but Nelson was right there until the end, counterpunching beautifully.

Nelson was NOT in this at any stage, why do you say that when this video clearly shows what really happened....it is HERE for all to view..it was a con and a cheat and was never even close if one were to be honest.

i also watched it live then & i had no doubt that fenech was beaten. azumah was throwing wide punches in some bouts before the fench fight so that might have emboldened fenech to be gidigidi in ghanaian palance. but on the day azumah was very effective. azumah himself felt he had beaten fenech so @ the tail end of thwe last round attempted some teasing which infuriated fenech.

You're correct Mike, and I shared the same view back in 91 having only watched it once right through at that time, however having watched it again and put the commentators out of the picture the fight was very close. Nelson might have been a tad lucky to get the draw but it wasn't any robbery that it's been made out to be.

Nelson has to date been the best and most successful fighter to come from Africa. Jeff Fenech was two years out of the ring prior to this fight with issues with his hands so it should have been all Nelson with his years of experience. From round one to the final round Fenech drove a truck over Nelson and hurt him several times, most notably in the final round. Through the entire fight, Fenech forced the action and had Nelson against the ropes in every single round. Nelson's best punch was actually after the bell! This is a perfect example of the corruption in boxing and the term 'robbed' is the biggest understatement. Throughout the entire fight Nelson had no answer to Fenech with the exception of 'magically' losing his mouth piece between rounds!

I watched this fight in a pub that was packed. Cant remember which one. What I do remember was the reaction of everyone in the pub when the verdict was announced. All at once EVERY person in the pub uttered Huh???????????? It rang out right throughout the pub. No-one could believe it.This fight was pretty much the finish of Jeff Fenech as a fighter because it broke his spirit. He was never the same fighter after this!! What this video does not show is the look of anguish and disbelief on Fenechs face when the verdict was announced.

Sure we'll never know how Jeff's career would have gone if he was rightfully given the decision here but recently the WBC retrospectively rejudged the fight with ring officials from all over the world & the decision officially reversed, NONE of them scored the fight for Azumah. Fenech is now officially one of few 4 time world boxing champions in history. Decades later justice has prevailed.

@@Charlie_Fucsard Thanks for this. lm glad to see Jeff take what was rightfully his. After this fight Fenech never looked after himself properly and this led to his demise in boxing. A true shame!!! ln Jeffs latter years l remember discussing with my karate instructor why he started losing. We agreed he had started to lose his famous hand speed. This was another reason why he became prone to being knocked out. Had he been awarded this fight however, he would have taken more care of himself and lasted longer in the sport.

Nelson :- " Fenech never faced someone like me before " . Thats true because your promotor Don King rigged the fight Fenech could have knocked you clean out and King would have still made sure , that the decision would have went your way Azumah . Oh and if there is any doubt over this statement of mine , the WBC last week reversed this decision because they knew King rigged it

25:25 After the 5th round Johnny Lewis has a look at Azumah and says, "This bloke is absolutely rooted, Jeff, it's just a matter of us not getting hit at all over the next couple of rounds, c'mon." Jeff just pours it on for 7 more rounds, any fair judge has him winning by 4 rounds .. Ferdie Pacheco has it 117-111, but is wise enough to say "one never knows in Las Vegas, but even here this has got to be a clear cut win for Fenech, who has covered himself with glory".

Still for me this was a toss up fight and not a robbery .... happy with a draw. Aussies saying this diminished Fenech is utter bull. Ask 10 NON boxing/MMA people who Mayweather is and most if not all will know who he is but ask those same people who Jon Jones is and chances are most if any will not know who Jon Jones is. Nelson did not educate Fenech, Fenech was a one trick pony a very tough and very good one trick pony,they had one battle plan attack regardless and at his peak it was the only plan he needed as his record shows.It was a Nelson team that was educated,as proved in the second encounter.I personal have witnessed Fenech being knocked down twice,and it was the same punch that got him on both occasions,a looping over the top right hand. the first mans to nail him with it was Martinez in Melb,he hit Fenech ,Fenech hit the Ground,got up took the 8 and back pedal for the remained of the round,very close to being beating if not for the bell,come out the next round and destroyed Martinez.I believed Nelson went to school on that fight,he was very patient until got the opportunity to hit him with the same punch.And Nelson was a more talented boxer than Fenech,not a better brawler.

Granted Fenech was robbed by this decision, i believe any mentally tough champion would have been so outraged by this decision that they would batter their opponent in any rematch. In the final analysis, after several rematches, the ultimate warrior was left standing. The Professor!! nuf said!!
@killcancer6499
@killcancer6499 5 лет назад
Are you saying Fenech wasn't mentally tough numb nuts? If two closely matched boxers fight each other ten times, it is unlikely that the same fighter will win each time. By my count Fenech won 2 out of the three, including the last one. That would make him the "ultimate warrior" left standing by your criteria.

JUSTICE HAS FINALLY BEEN SERVED ON THE BIGGEST ROBBERY IN BOXING HISTORY! "Aussie boxer Jeff Fenech has been retrospectively awarded a fourth world title, 31 years after being controversially robbed of the super-featherweight belt" "All the ring officials from all over the world score the bout in favour of Jeff Fenech" Better late than never I suppose. Countless Aussie boxing fans turned their back on boxing & never watched a single boxing match ever again after this blatant robbery, it was a masive stain on the 'sport' & has never fully recovered in this country.

He lost 3 of his last 7 fights after this, so you might be right - but I also think he didn't carry as much pop on his punches when he moved up to 130lbs. - won the the 118, 122, & 126lbs titles, & he wanted to win a fourth at this weight - his strength & power had to give out at some point if he kept moving up......

Shameful decision :/ boxing is so corrupt. If Ferdie Pacheco says you're winning the fight easily at the start of the 12th round, which you then dominate, you've won the fight easily .. end of story.

Fenech won this fight by about a million points. He hammered Nelson severely. In the other matches one has to feel sorry for Fenech as his hands were totally gone. To prove this point listen to the Deniss Andriess V Jeff Harding fight of 1989 and the commentators making the point THEN that his hands were gone! Fenech was about twice the fighter than Nelson and wow HOW DOES this get the decision it did? Cheat is about the BEST thing a person can say!

If you look at Nelson at the end of the fight,......he looked very gaunt. He was sick, just getting over Malaria. I'm not a fan of either guy and not making excuses for Nelson, but he was a warrior for lasting the 12 rounds and staying on his feet in the last round. The difference is seen in their 2nd fight when Nelson was healthy. He walked right through Fenech when Jeff was in his prime at about 26 or 27, and Nelson was past his in his 30's. Both were tough guys.
