How fantastic that now, in 2022 the WBC has finally put matters right and awarded Fenech the fight and the title. First time I have seen Fenech fight and what a champion he was!
Great fight, great hearts. Saw this live in 91 and thought it was all Fenech, but now I see it was closer than I thought then. Cheerleading for Fenech by the TV guys maybe influenced the impression I had. Not taking anything away from Fenech's energetic performance, but Nelson was right there until the end, counterpunching beautifully.
Nelson was NOT in this at any stage, why do you say that when this video clearly shows what really happened....it is HERE for all to view..it was a con and a cheat and was never even close if one were to be honest.
i also watched it live then & i had no doubt that fenech was beaten. azumah was throwing wide punches in some bouts before the fench fight so that might have emboldened fenech to be gidigidi in ghanaian palance. but on the day azumah was very effective. azumah himself felt he had beaten fenech so @ the tail end of thwe last round attempted some teasing which infuriated fenech.
You're correct Mike, and I shared the same view back in 91 having only watched it once right through at that time, however having watched it again and put the commentators out of the picture the fight was very close. Nelson might have been a tad lucky to get the draw but it wasn't any robbery that it's been made out to be.
It's taken decades but be happy my friend, the WBC have rejudged the fight retrospectively with ring officials from all over the world & the decision officially reversed, NONE of them scored the fight for Azumah. Jeff is now officially one of the few 4 time boxing world champions in history!!!
i don't care about points, fenech won that fight period. he was on the attack the whole time. One of the best fights ever. I reckon jeff fench and Tyson are the two most exciting boxers ever. Hard to watch any other fights after watching fenech and Tyson.
Nelson has to date been the best and most successful fighter to come from Africa. Jeff Fenech was two years out of the ring prior to this fight with issues with his hands so it should have been all Nelson with his years of experience. From round one to the final round Fenech drove a truck over Nelson and hurt him several times, most notably in the final round. Through the entire fight, Fenech forced the action and had Nelson against the ropes in every single round. Nelson's best punch was actually after the bell! This is a perfect example of the corruption in boxing and the term 'robbed' is the biggest understatement. Throughout the entire fight Nelson had no answer to Fenech with the exception of 'magically' losing his mouth piece between rounds!
I watched this fight in a pub that was packed. Cant remember which one. What I do remember was the reaction of everyone in the pub when the verdict was announced. All at once EVERY person in the pub uttered Huh???????????? It rang out right throughout the pub. No-one could believe it.This fight was pretty much the finish of Jeff Fenech as a fighter because it broke his spirit. He was never the same fighter after this!! What this video does not show is the look of anguish and disbelief on Fenechs face when the verdict was announced.
Sure we'll never know how Jeff's career would have gone if he was rightfully given the decision here but recently the WBC retrospectively rejudged the fight with ring officials from all over the world & the decision officially reversed, NONE of them scored the fight for Azumah. Fenech is now officially one of few 4 time world boxing champions in history. Decades later justice has prevailed.
@@Charlie_Fucsard Thanks for this. lm glad to see Jeff take what was rightfully his. After this fight Fenech never looked after himself properly and this led to his demise in boxing. A true shame!!! ln Jeffs latter years l remember discussing with my karate instructor why he started losing. We agreed he had started to lose his famous hand speed. This was another reason why he became prone to being knocked out. Had he been awarded this fight however, he would have taken more care of himself and lasted longer in the sport.
Utter nonsense… no robbery here. Depends how you wanna score. Azumah might be on the ropes but in Fenech’s work I see a lot of missed shots ! A lot. And greater connectivity from Azumah. And anyway in the rematch a non malaria affected Azumah showed the gulf in class, boxing, strength and dog mentality 👍🏾
@@delerotimi7006 lol The WBC retrospectively rejudged the fight with ring officials from all over the world & the decision was officially reversed, NONE of them scored the fight for Azumah. Fenech is now officially & deservedly one of few 4 time world boxing champions in history.
Nelson :- " Fenech never faced someone like me before " . Thats true because your promotor Don King rigged the fight Fenech could have knocked you clean out and King would have still made sure , that the decision would have went your way Azumah . Oh and if there is any doubt over this statement of mine , the WBC last week reversed this decision because they knew King rigged it
25:25 After the 5th round Johnny Lewis has a look at Azumah and says, "This bloke is absolutely rooted, Jeff, it's just a matter of us not getting hit at all over the next couple of rounds, c'mon." Jeff just pours it on for 7 more rounds, any fair judge has him winning by 4 rounds .. Ferdie Pacheco has it 117-111, but is wise enough to say "one never knows in Las Vegas, but even here this has got to be a clear cut win for Fenech, who has covered himself with glory".
No refs decision at the end?? Video cut off way to fucking early! and a fucking draw?? I respect both fighters but this fight was lob sided to Fenech, at best 10-2 in rounds!!!!
It doesn't even matter what the scorecards say, both these guys fought like champions. If Azumah wasn't the belt holder, this could have easily been called a draw.
The WBC recently retrospectively rejudged the fight with ring officials from all over the world & the decision officially reversed, NONE of them scored the fight for Azumah. Fenech is now officially a 4 time world boxing champion
Yes jeff won the fight i think he also was fighting with a broken hand and no one new his that type off warrior had fights with his hand broken and did not make excuses his real boxer legend as kids we all loved jeff fenech god bless him.. would be good if they gave him a tv channel for boxing and news
Can anybody explain to me why Fenech looked so tough up to this fight like nothing could break him down and in the second fight he suddenly couldn't take a punch? Was it that he stopped training properly? I heard that he had some problems with broken hands.
i honestly blieve that the disgraceful vegas decision, which technically didnt take away jeffs unbeaten record, was the end of him mentally,i know he was affected much more than the public knew .the blatent ripoff made him feel that it didnt matter how well he fought or how easy he won ,if the money men bhind the scenes didnt want u 2 win ,u couldnt win.the dishonesty took that little thing inside ,that made him get up on freezing mornings n put those xtra miles in2 his training n just put in the little bit more that made him a winner, he lost that desire, almost like fuck it,no more. if he got that decision in vegas,i blieve history would show a completely differant story. i feel sorry 4 the man.
Aussies chatting shit as normal. The truth. Nelson snapped of his usual fitness as he contracted malaria in run up to the fight being announced. Still for me this was a toss up fight and not a robbery .... happy with a draw. Aussies saying this diminished Fenech is utter bull. If anything it made him more determined to right what he saw as a robbery and do it on home turf. A fit Nelson went into the lions den and gave him a boxing lesson like rarely seen and a manhandling!
Azumah settled up in the rematch and showed who was supreme! Never give Azumah Nelson a rematch, big mistake, once he works you out its K.O time! 👑 😂🤣😂
Azuma was on the back foot for the entire fight with Fenech coming on throughout nearly every round. Cannot believe Fenech lost. How do you not give the fight to aggressive who pours it on non stop?
IF MMA/UFC is killing Boxing than how come Boxing STILL outsells MMA/UFC in PPV sales? Jon Jones is never going to come close to making 40+million dollars for one fight nor will one of his fights ever sell in the millions like Floyd Mayweather or Manny Pacquaio fights. Ask 10 NON boxing/MMA people who Mayweather is and most if not all will know who he is but ask those same people who Jon Jones is and chances are most if any will not know who Jon Jones is. How was Fenech robbed in the second fight? He was KO'd.
What are you talking about...how was he robbed in BOTH fights???????..he was knocked senseless in the rematch...in his own hometown ! How is that a robbery Are ya talking outa yer hole? It certainly seems like it.
what a fucking robbery. azumah only won the first 2 rounds and i tried to give him the tenth round as he was goin well in the beginning of the round but still so easily could of gave it to fenech but gave azumah benifit of the doubt. still got it 9rds-3rds for fenech maybe even 10-2. absolute robbery. fenech is aus best
In the 4th round these two paid off commentators say Azumah has greater skill outside the corner yet later on they say Fenech is the man who wrote the manual of ring general ship - what a corrupt couple of commentators!
WOW I am watching this again after 2 years and not meaning to NE mean..but the commentators....they are making ludicrous remarks..I wonder if later in in life if they were ever embarrassed by them?????
Pacquciao is a masterful legend. He outboxed that no name school teacher. If you call hits to the gloves and air swings a win you need a kick up the arse too.
What, no decision shown ? Then I read fenech lost. The Germans couldn't defeat the Maltese in WW2. guessing by this, if it was judged they would have. Though I didn't look hard enough at the fight to know who won ? But most are saying fenech won. So ille accept that.
@@alhajiishak2924 Fenech destroyed Nelson in this fight but unfortunately the comment section is polluted with delusional Nelson fanatics who can't accept the reality of this shocking robbery.
Aye, he is a proper tough lad, "The Marrickville Mauler", a right hard man, to be sure. Shoulda heard some of the legends of his antics on the streets of Sydney, before he became the incredible, relentless multiple-weight world champion boxer that he went on to become. A true fighter and warrior, and an absolute legend of boxing, through and through. Max respect, Jeff Fenech, "The Marrickville Mauler".
I'm sorry.. not sorry. Fenech BRUTALISED Nelson for 10 of those 12 rounds and the last was the most dominating... the last 30 seconds he was HAMMERING his face in... and "they" gave it to Nelson???!!! That is the very definition of RIGGED... right there.
Adam Zillin Fenech did not “brutalize” him for 10 rounds. A lot of those shots in round 3 and 4 when Azumah and Jeff was standing toe to toe was landing on forearms and gloves.
@@pauloskidane2819 Fenech clearly beat up Nelson and in the last round was on the verge of KO Him and they gave it a draw, because Don Kings hair was in the house ? Idiots from America complain about the Horn vs Pacquiao fight in Australia, but what about this shit ?
Adam Zillin what were you watching, pugilism isn’t about throwing punches it’s about landing punches. As to how you see French winning 10 of those 12 rounds is amazing. Please get your eyes checked or better still get a lesson in boxing.
@@victorasalu4466 He must have been watching the same fight I was. Fenech landed plenty of punches and they did a good deal more damage than Azumah's punches as the fight wore on. Why do you think they "lost" Azumah's mouth guard? He needed a rest. Why do you think Azumah took a swing after the bell? He was frustrated. He had reason to be. I had Azumah winning 2 or 3 rounds. I guess I could give him four if I were being generous. Fights like this have me wondering who is more corrupt? Politicians or Boxing Judges. Btw, Azumah has always been one of my favorite fighters. I had never seen this fight before. The only time I previously saw Fenech was his second fight with Nelson. We know how that went.
absolutely whenever i watch it i think of the possible super fights for fenech over there i mean could you imagine the clash of styles fench v whitacker
Nelson did not educate Fenech, Fenech was a one trick pony a very tough and very good one trick pony, they had one battle plan attack regardless and at his peak it was the only plan he needed as his record shows. It was a Nelson team that was educated,as proved in the second encounter.I personal have witnessed Fenech being knocked down twice, and it was the same punch that got him on both occasions,a looping over the top right hand. the first mans to nail him with it was Martinez in Melb,he hit Fenech ,Fenech hit the Ground, got up took the 8 and back pedal for the remained of the round, very close to being beating if not for the bell, come out the next round and destroyed Martinez.I believed Nelson went to school on that fight,he was very patient until got the opportunity to hit him with the same punch. And Nelson was a more talented boxer than Fenech, not a better brawler.
Ali even said Jeff Fenech won easily. If the fight had of gone 15 rounds, Nelson would have bean knocked out. Fenech held him up at the end of the fight.
@@sashasarronen6300 What about all the WBC ring officials from all over the world who recently rejudged the fight & officially retrospectively reversed the decision with NONE of them scored the fight for Azumah? Do they all have parkinson's disease also? lol
Jeff was insane. He would throw 300 plus punches per round. His biggest downfall were his hands they were smashed all the time. Watched him win the world title against Shingaki. Was lucky enough to be ringside for most of his early fights in Sydney.
Granted Fenech was robbed by this decision, i believe any mentally tough champion would have been so outraged by this decision that they would batter their opponent in any rematch. In the final analysis, after several rematches, the ultimate warrior was left standing. The Professor!! nuf said!!
Are you saying Fenech wasn't mentally tough numb nuts? If two closely matched boxers fight each other ten times, it is unlikely that the same fighter will win each time. By my count Fenech won 2 out of the three, including the last one. That would make him the "ultimate warrior" left standing by your criteria.
To this day it's the greatest robbery I've ever seen in boxing. I remember just flipping channels and caught the beating Fenech gave Nelson. And then he was ROBBED!!!!
@@tata011670 You mean like the WBC ring officials from all over the world who recently retrospectively watched/rejudged the fight & the decision officially reversed, with NONE of them scoring the fight for Azumah? :)
JUSTICE HAS FINALLY BEEN SERVED ON THE BIGGEST ROBBERY IN BOXING HISTORY! "Aussie boxer Jeff Fenech has been retrospectively awarded a fourth world title, 31 years after being controversially robbed of the super-featherweight belt" "All the ring officials from all over the world score the bout in favour of Jeff Fenech" Better late than never I suppose. Countless Aussie boxing fans turned their back on boxing & never watched a single boxing match ever again after this blatant robbery, it was a masive stain on the 'sport' & has never fully recovered in this country.
He lost 3 of his last 7 fights after this, so you might be right - but I also think he didn't carry as much pop on his punches when he moved up to 130lbs. - won the the 118, 122, & 126lbs titles, & he wanted to win a fourth at this weight - his strength & power had to give out at some point if he kept moving up......
@@kufujitsu Fenech took the power and strength with him, unfortunately he suffers from "Brittle Hands" and broke them in every fight. His undoing to his hands came from "Street Fights".
nelson won the first 2 rounds then fenech bullied him for the next 10 ..... was the aggressor the entire fight, landed the better punches, what were these judges smoking? a robbery and a travesty ........
Shameful decision :/ boxing is so corrupt. If Ferdie Pacheco says you're winning the fight easily at the start of the 12th round, which you then dominate, you've won the fight easily .. end of story.
Fenech won this fight by about a million points. He hammered Nelson severely. In the other matches one has to feel sorry for Fenech as his hands were totally gone. To prove this point listen to the Deniss Andriess V Jeff Harding fight of 1989 and the commentators making the point THEN that his hands were gone! Fenech was about twice the fighter than Nelson and wow HOW DOES this get the decision it did? Cheat is about the BEST thing a person can say!
Just another controversial promotion of Don King. He had this fight fixed and what more could you expect from a street criminal and two time murderer. It could only happen in America.
Only Whitaker v Chavez was a worse decision. Fenech won every round from 5 to 12, you could argue he won round 4 too. It was a clear win for Fenech. Bullshit decision.
This video is many cuts , fenech has been knock out 3 times on this fight . i dont know whats happening in the video , hats off to azuma nelson , great boxer from ghana to be remember .
Your nut case......fenech was never in trouble and a close look will reveal he never lost the first two rounds either..Azumah always hitting after the bell.
Don King is too cheap to buy off the judges. Even if Nelson lost he could make more money on the rematch. Don King made a lot of his money by cheating his fighters.
If you look at Nelson at the end of the fight,......he looked very gaunt. He was sick, just getting over Malaria. I'm not a fan of either guy and not making excuses for Nelson, but he was a warrior for lasting the 12 rounds and staying on his feet in the last round. The difference is seen in their 2nd fight when Nelson was healthy. He walked right through Fenech when Jeff was in his prime at about 26 or 27, and Nelson was past his in his 30's. Both were tough guys.
its amazing that in the corners between rounds nothing was mentioned about this at all and with the medical necessity of fighters actually being tested to ensure they do NOT have any conditions this is just BS!
I met Jeff Fenech in a shopping mall one day and asked him for an autograph for my kid. ‘The King Effect’. Nelson, champion boxer and elite fighter was clearly eclipsed in this particular fight by Fenech though.
Edwin how you been bro ? You used to help me and my bro out when you were in Lynn. Catch me on facebook (AL Mckenzie)...I will stop by thru your gym one day.
Fenech won round 12 hands down. What about the rest? I urge you all not to be carried away by Fenech performance in the final round. He so lucky to get a draw decision.
If you've come to fight an Aussie make sure u bring your Hart! We love a bang on only problem is we don't have enough fighters to bang on with to get to the high levels!
Great fight... Fenech was a machine.. One of my favourite fighters..them judges were bought.. Fenech won that by a wide margin.. Respect to both fighters.. But damn judges suck
