This is called "planting green." It is a relatively new practice that has not been researched extensively. Please consult other farmers or ag educators about practices in your areas. See also the links below. Depending on your system (no-till, organic), the cover crop is usually terminated very soon after planting the cash crop (within a few days - before cash crop emergence). The advantages are that the cover crop has a couple of weeks of extra growth. Also, it is often easier to plant through green cover than through partially dead cover crops, which can become very tough.
