Jeff Gordon on Driver Personality, Charter Negotiations & What's Next For HMS | Dale Jr Download

In an effort to learn more about the current charter negotiations between Cup team owners and the NASCAR organization, Dale Earnhardt Jr. sits down with Vice Chairman of Hendrick Motorsports Jeff Gordon. If a guest makes a repeat appearance on the Dale Jr. Download, it’s likely because they are such a monumental subject that it's impossible to cover with just one interview. That can certainly be said about Jeff, who first appeared on the show in December 2018 as he was working at Fox Sports as a commentator following his storied racing career. Since then, he has moved into an integral role at the Hendrick Motorsports organization, and provides listeners with great insight into the current talks between the Race Team Alliance and the NASCAR brass.
Dale also inquires about Jeff’s thoughts on the NextGen car in Cup competition, to which Jeff details the challenges teams face in the race shop and how consistency is crucial to on-track success. The story of transitioning from the broadcast booth to an executive role at HMS is covered, which began all the way back in 2000 when Jeff signed a lifetime contract with Rick Hendrick. Dale fields a few questions from fans for Jeff, and they chat about how post-racing life has affected their at home environments with their families.

Spot on man! I was a Sr fan and loved when Jr showed up and showed out. Not that he was even close to being as good as his dad he did prove he was a damn good driver and now he has this opportunity to bring the encyclopedia of NASCAR to us as the interviewer and killing it. Love this show!!!

Dude I think jr is a decent person absolutely. But as far as driving, he was a Busch series driver all day. He was slightly better than Paul menard and had top notch equipment. Interviews were downright awful for jr when he was being interviewed. He was like a mix of boomhauer and Ricky Bobby. I had to change the channel from second hand embarrassment. His podcast is good though. I’m sure he has a good team of writers and all. But yeah, JR when it comes to being the interviewer or interviewee is the equivalent of ozzy osbourne singing vs talking. Night and day difference.

I have always had huge respect for Jeff Gordon, not only as a driver, yet also as a spokesperson for NASCAR and in particular for the drivers. This time though when Jeff came into the studio it wasn't the Jeff Gordon that I have seen over the past few decades. It was very different. Jeff has always had a confident aura about him. Now though, his leadership presence opens up the room. He's not overpowering. However his presence is commanding. He gives respect, and that is what I am seeing. His commanding, respectful presence levels the playing field.

@@djmohab2 I understand your point and I respect it also. For me it was his passion for the sport that overrode the fact that he didn't take his helmet off. Would it have added to the impact of the moment if he had taken his helmet off before getting all up in another drivers face? Sure it would. Would it have been any more meaningful? Not for me it wouldn't. That's because he took action instead of waiting until a camera was on him to start running his mouth like many other drivers do. I respect that he went and confronted the driver; action, that's my main point.

I think the thing that I most appreciate is how much Junior has become an analyst of the sport and it shows in his interviews. Like he mentioned at the end, he covers a lot of stuff with his guests that usually don't get asked anywhere else. As an old timer I can appreciate this kind of interview because it is so boring watching the same interview time and again with the same questions and stories with everyone involved. Dale Jr breaks this mold. ps - I miss Mike also being at the table during interviews.

As a long time far of NASCAR Cup, a true admirer of Mr. H and, a forever fan of #24 Jeff Gordon all the way back to his USAC Open Wheel days. I must say that HMS and all involved could not have a better "Man at the Helm" than Jeff. Kudos to Jr. for having this great conversation. I believe that Jeff knows the "Change in Business Model" that the series is going through and hopefully, the powers that be in the sport will realize that all of the current "Gimickery" is not real racing and the new audience they are hoping to attract will soon see this fact for themselves and prove to not be the long term fans that they are hoping to cultivate. Thank you Dale Jr. for this enlightened conversation.

Learned a *lot* about Jeff *and* about the charter stuff and where the owners stand by watching this podcast. Had no idea that Jeff left broadcasting for the reason that he did. RH is *such* a class act. Now wondering what happens when RH is gone. How much equity does Jeff have? Will he have to battle some of the Hendrick family? How much "class" does NASCAR lose when Rick is gone? That "leverage" question seems huge. Do *any* of the big teams turn a profit? How many tracks does NASCAR own? Does NASCAR know how important Junior is to the sport these days? Isn't Junior buddies with Bruton Smith's son - whom I presume now owns a bunch of tracks? Might Junior be the leverage source that the owners need? The "TV deal" struck me as being rather bizarre. Already thought it was bizarre that the season was split in two. That lack of continuity sure didn't seem like a positive to me. Now, heck, I've never even flicked a net and ain't sure what "streaming" even is, though I may have already unknowingly tried a bit of it with one of these smart TVs. We're driving over to Daytona today for the postponed race, expecting the big one. Hope all the proper safety features are in place. Did I ramble? Oh, and I certainly agree about the gimmickry (had to google the spelling). 🙂

These are 2 of the guys that need to be "ambassadors" of the sport. NASCAR still has a stigma, but I can send ANYONE in my life a clip of these guys chatting about the sport and know it will be received well.

You know I thought Mike Davis being out of the booth was gonna be a letdown... and while I do miss Mike (no offense dude, love ya, crash Door Bumper Clear more this year please) Jr. really has come into his own and this interview nails it. Gonna be a great year.

Jeff would have been competitive today I feel like if he was still in a car. Just like Dale sr. I think Dale Sr would have retired competitive just like Jeff did. Jeff is definitely one of the greatest. I miss the days of Earnhardt, Dale Jr, and Jeff Gordon. I guess that’d be the year 2000.

Never realized Jeff Gordon was still this involved with Hendrick. I grew up an Earnhardt fan, but when he went to Hendrick I began rooting for the teammates, obviously that includes Gordon. Rick has entrusted his brand with one of the best guys to do it. Gordon is such a staple in NASCAR, he’s definitely motivated and you can tell he loves it. Hendrick Motorsports will continue to succeed for years to come with Gordon at the helm.

As a fan for 40 years....I just wish we could get back to racing. Back to real emotions. Real attitudes on and off the track. Then the sponsorship would follow on best, most popular, most controversial, etc.

Man, i remember gordons dominance for years, and of course, since my dad was an earnhardt fan, i gravitated to him and naturally was a fan of Jr. Anyway, my dad said of gordon that you can't argue with success and therefore must respect his talent and ability to be the best at what he was doing at the time.

Great download with Gordon. Has there even been another Cup driver that has hosted SNL ?

I'm not even that old, just 40, but the charters just make me think of Alan Kulwicki and the like. Like, they could never even survive in today's NASCAR, and that's sad...

Jeff Gordon, I'm trying to motivate all the drivers... I'm trying to help Rick Hendrick ... I write messages to point out things ... They post the race after the winner ... And I like to congratulate the driver , if they drive a Chevrolet.... I pull 💯 % for Hendrick Motorsports Teammates ... I always followed Rick and Papa Joe Hendrick.... And now I'm following Rick Hendrick & Jeff Gordon at H.M.R. I've been into racing all my life .... I helped a few drivers in the smaller class for local racing.... You ever heard of Sunshine Speedway... I worked on J.H. Racing Open Wheel Modified ... He won a championship, Jimmy Houle ... I didn't get to go to his party after the season ended.... So I moved on to other drivers, and then I dropped out .... I did drag racing myself and my father... Moved from drag racing to circle track racing.... I just couldn't get use to the rod.... You pull the rod and it shifts the car ... And you push it in to far , it goes in reverse .... And I tour up several Transmissions , because I push the rod all the way in .... Which is to far.... But I posted a message today .... And they deleted the message because it to big ... But I heard you can write as much as you like... But no bad language

It’s interesting to hear Jeff appreciate the importance of things like the new Netflix show when Hendrick really didn’t give much access for it. Hopefully they open their doors more for the next season (if there is one).
