Gotta love the big block chevy! Running a 555ci, Brodix BB2 heads, edelbrock rolling thunder,248/256 duration 632/648 lift. 11" vacuum, manley crank and rods, mahle 10.5 pistons. Runs on pump gas and drive it all the time. Fun to drive!!

Hi Jeff .! Love the video.. the explanation of the parts was very well done.. Man . I have a 468 /400 combo. 3400 stall Ford 9” n cased 31 mosers tru trac and 3:25 gear set . All marketplace bought and built for best dollar invested… The torque of these big blocks .. is really awesome. Timing flow and well .. Purple octane.. makes it that much more fun. The best of torque 1:1 at 45 mph with thrush mufflers … Sounds of a 9ft horse galloping down the road .. feather pedal. The oval ported head at 4500 and up insane.. My stock shifting 1-2 killed its run . 4200 stock shift . Dropped her right down . 5200-5500 is the happy spot on this set up.

I like it. Jeff Smith articles seemed to be right on point as well. I have a couple of big block 402 engines, I know they are not 454's but I am going to use them any way...in a street in my 78 Malibu and my 68 impala. I would like to see some combo ideas.

Couldn't help but notice that this video about bigblock Chevy combos has 50,000 views, and the video next to it about LS combos has 2700 views. That says alot despite popular opinion. And yes, that cam suggestion is pretty weak. Bigblocks like big cams, big heads, big carbs & intakes and big compression. If your gonna take the weight penalty of using a bigblock Chevy, it better make some serious power to justify it. A mild bigblock is a waste of a beast of an engine just waiting to be unleashed. MK4 BB Chevy was based on a NASCAR engine from 63. So it was born to run.

I have a comp cam magnum hf 286 its 236/236 @ .050 .555 lift with 1.72 rockers seems very similar to the roller cam he recommends idles at 800 rpm 11 hg of vac at idle 12 13 at a fast idle off idle power with a 2600 stall converter pulls to 6200. power brakes w/ vac can work great heavy car with ac been in car for years very reliable.if your on a budget and your first big block use this cam..

Hey Jeff I just watched your big block combo video I have a 427 that's 0.60 over so a 439 it's 10.5 to 1 compression it's got a Howard's hydraulic roller 235x241@50 with 618 lift and a 108 lsa it's got a forged crank good gm dimple rods and a set of AFR 265 oval port heads it made 661 hp and 605 torque on the dyno I know this is a great street combo but I want it to be a Lil more nasty I have a comp cams xr292r solid roller that is 254x260@50 with 660x666 lift on a 110 lsa what's your thoughts on doing this cam swap I don't mind the Lil extra mantnince with a solid roller?

I have a L78 with 840 heads, the thing will turn like a 327 but with the torque of a big block. What modern aluminum head is identical or as close to identical as possible to the 840 head?

What do you think of speedmaster cylinder heads? They make an as cast oval port with 2.19 and 1.88 valves.

all you got to look for is the 402s cubic inch Chevy big block engines in any of those double ports will work fine they also make aftermarket cast iron heads when I bought a set they were only $730 each can imagine what they would cost now

I read one of your articles where you did a roller retrofit on a 454 and you used the comp xr276hr cam. You said your friends car had 3.08 gears and with traction it would run 11.50 1/4 miles. What torque converter stall did you use in the simulation?

Good info. I bought a 84 c10 with a 454 +.030 over, icon pistons and a summit 1796 cam. I think it has stock iron 718 heads and stock springs, rockers etc. Holley 750 double pumper on top of a TSP air gap intake and a TH400, spin tech pro street 9000 mufflers. Runs smooth , sounds badass and fun but is lacking true HP. What should I do? I want a street 600hp motor.

Gotta port those heads and work on the short side radius and a good valve job and proper springs for your cam. Get with Chris Straub for a cam recommendation. Also 10.5:1 compression. That’s all you need to get 550-600 HP. If your heads need much work just buy AFR or Brodix 265 oval port heads, they’re good for 600+ HP out of the box.....

For the street a set of Brodix Race-Rites can't be beat. But, a nice set of 781's or 049's will get you close. A old Performer RPM intake with a 1" spacer will duplicate the performance of a Air Gap. Look into the Chris Straub hydraulic roller grind sold by Clay Smith Cams, especially with the GM iron heads.

That cam with oval port heads is a torque beast! Just got my 72 C10 454 +0.030” running with that HR cam and when the back barrels open up on the 3310 the truck goes sideways in 1’st or 2’nd gear. Cam is 221/235 @ 0.050” and 0.578”/0.578” lift on 109* LSA

What’s your thoughts on the Dart 360 super aluminum head rectangular heads? I have a 496 custom cam and am wondering if this head is up to task running a 8 stack efi

Kenneth - I think that would be a good choice. I don't have any personal dyno experience with that particluar head but Dart knows how to move air so it should work well.

Nice to see you on video. I realize you are a hot rod guy, but wondering about building an L18 496 for towing. I would like to build for 89 pump gas. What would be a good compression ratio with aluminum heads? Also cam spec with said head as 3,000rpm is a good cruising range. 500 to 550 torque and 400-450hp is enough. Been a diesel guy, but emissions are an expensive problem.

You do know that this is a different engine from the MKIV and Gen V and Gen VI big-blocks. Your engine was a complete redesign. I do know that the heads do not interchange so you will have to work with that casting. As far as compression - I would keep it around 9:1 just so you could use regular pump gas. I'm not sure there are aluminum heads available for this engine. I know Dart used to make iron upgrade heads - you should contact them to see if they are still available - I think they stopped production on them last year. Comp does offer a few camsahfts for this engine. The XR264HR - PN46-413-9 might work well. Hope this helps.

@@jeffbarnes9331 I think a 9.5:1 compression ratio would be okay. It really matters more how efficient the chamber is rather than aluminum vs iron. I did a test on that many years ago and the aluminum made more power! I don't think the material is a concern. Aluminum is beter because its lighter and easier to repair.

I am rebuilding a BBC 408 and wonder how this cam would work in this smaller BBC. Will have ovel port heads with 219 -188 valves and around 10-1 compression

How did your rebuild turn out? I'm building a 408 now. I got a custom roller cam from Cam Motion, Johnson roller lifters, Brodix RR Oval ports with a downsized intake value to add clearance and Icon forged pistons. Should be at about 10.5 compression. The tech at Brodix that helped me choose the heads said it should be good for 600+ hp.

Mike - yes teh lift specs are a bit soft. There are some new lobes that Comp has created that offer more power with similar lifts specs - the key is additional lift is generated on the closing side of the lobe - where you have lots of velocity even with the valve closing. I did an A-B test on an LS engine with similar lobes and picked up 15 hp from peak torque to peak hp rpm point. Otherwise the specs were almost identical! I need to do a video on that.

Pretty weak. I'm using a .748/.748 lift, 288/296@.050, 110 lobe sep stick in my Rat. I'll probably drive it more than he does that mild engine. And I'm using a tunnelram and heads that flow.

The factory aluminum heads on that particular engine were not ported but the combustion chambers were milled before I received the engine so the compression is right at 10.5:1.

Dear smith and garage, would you help me? What is the smallest cam i can get away with for a 607 BBC ? i want to run the smallest comp cams XR hydraulic roller. And AFR 265cc heads or smaller. And building a cross ram intake for it with modified holley carburetors. It is for a 2nd gen camaro with a mile of set back, daily driver.

Not a expert but I have a rolling thunder in my 555ci. It has 248/256 duration 632/648 lift. 11" of vacuum. I drive the car all the time. Might be a good cam for you. I really like it!!

Im building a 9.6:1 496 with worked 781 GM heads. This engine will be going in a 1985 K5 blazer. How do you think the Comp Cam XR282HR which is the 230/236 camshaft would perform in this application?

An answer is it depends upon how you intend to use the Blazer. If it intended to pull torque at low rpm like out in the woods or four-wheeling, something like that then the cam is probably one size too big. but if street performance and more midrange to top end power is your goal then that cam is probably a god choice. Sure, the big difference with Gen V is the change to the one-piece rear main seal, hydraulic roller cam, and no mechanical fuel pump provision. But the same potential upgrades can be done to that engine. Gen V modified the water jacket outlets on the deck surface slightly, but most aftermarket heads now have been modified to accept those revisions. You will need a camshaft that has a stepped nose that accommodates the limiter plate used on the Gen V which is nice because then you don't need to mess with setting camsahft endplay with a cam button - the factory did that for you! There are stroker cranks available and piston selection is roughly the same as Gen IV stuff. So yes, there's a ton of potential for the Gen V engines.

Fel-pro says they head gaskets that allow you to Mark4 head on later blocks and vice versa. I can't get a handle on the details, can you shed any light on this subject?

Generally speaking most aftermarket BBV heads will work on either MKIV or Gen V-VI blocks. Where you run into trouble is with production heads. You cannot run a production MKIV head on a Gen V or Gen VI block as this will cause coolant leaks because the Gen V and VI blocks coolant holes have been modified. This is a much deeper subject but the above statements should keep you out of trouble. I can't answer with more clairty since you didn't offer any specifics as to what you are trying to accomplish. Hope this helps.

@@jeffsmith2003 Thanks for the reply. What you stated is the common wisdom, don't try to put Mark-4- 781 heads on Gen 5 or 6 blocks. The potential coolant leaks aren't worth the risk. Most if not all aftermarket heads with work on either. Don't get too fancy with the mix and match. Thanks again your videos are very helpful.

Jeff:I found an XR 282 HR-10. With an Exhaust lift of .510 instead of .520. Is that the same cam? I was thinking maybe it was a misprint or something. Let me know if you can and I appreciate all your help!

If you look at the video at 8:56 - inside the dyno curve is the information on the camshafts - specs and grind numbers. At 9:04 is a list of all the parts we mentioned and the part numbers.

This sounds more like a commercial pushing products for sponsorship than a practical guide. Not everyone can afford aftermarket heads and mega dollar carbs or even need that for a street engine.

A valid opinion. First of all, there are no sponsors of Jeff Smith's Garage. I did this video to pass along some of the things I've learned from years of dyno testing engines for the major magazines. None of the manufacturers mentioned in this video asked me to do this. I did it as a service to our viewers. The only agneda here was to put out some information that some might feel is helpful. I want to make that very clear. There are perhaps 5,000 different combinations depending upon your specific needs and budget. Sure, there are other less expensive avenues. For a typical street 454, the 049 iron oval port heads can be built into decent street heads especially if you can afford to have the intake valve size increased to 2.190 from 2.06. I would leave the exhaust valve size at 1.7 .2-inches but you could increase the diameter to 1.88-inches. But - by the time you invest that much money into the increased valve size, you have spent about 70 percent of the cost of a set of Edebrock Performer RPM aluminum heads - nobody tells you that until you've already spent the money. I'm telling you this now to save you the grief. Plus, the 049 heads are becoming hard to find. So then you're down to stock heads - sure you can run stock heads. Perhaps I should have made that point in the video but it wasn't really the focus. So the question becomes would you want to spend $900 upgrading a set of iron heads when you could have a set of aluminum heads that would also shave 50-60 pounds off the nose of the car all for less than $1,500? The Edebrock Performer RPM heads are currently selling at $1,500. Frankly, if you can't afford another $600 then we really are not talking about performance anymore. Hot rodding has never been and never will be an inexpensive hobby. In keeping with a budget approach you could certainly go with a flat tappet hydraulic cam. Again to match this package a cam with roughly 225-228 degrees of duration at 0.050 would work well. I would match the iron heads or the Edelbrock heads with a dual plane Edelbrock performer RPM or Holley intake and a 750 cfm carburetor and and HEI and that would be a nice street package that would probably make around 540 lb-ft of torque and 525 hp.
