The Lakers acted this way toward Minneapolis for over 40 years, scoffed at any association despite Baylor and West playing there, acted like they were a different franchise, and then got sick of being so behind the Celtics in title count that they decided to tack on the 5 championships that nobody knows anything about
TRJ2241987 seattle was kind of still part of the modern day though. Lakers dipped Minneapolis back in 60’s there was still jim crow laws long ass time ago
Lucas Lehn why would it be a rivalry ? I don't think people in Seattle hate okc because they took our team prob more mad that we couldn't keep it . Plus the players that were on the team when they left don't even play on them anymore except collision . A rivalry needs two teams who's players hate each other

Oh thank you SO MUCH for deigning to allow that the 14th largest media market in the country which had a team for over 40 years and had it stolen by machiavellian douche bags from Oklahoma who repeatedly lied about their intentions "deserves a team".
seattle needs a team...why does la have 2 teams smh!!!!...give them the clippers...problem solved...no one cares about the clippers cause they are the biggest disappointment besides the cubs in sports history...and they still have the gay lakers...seriously 4 teams in ca but none in seattle ....not fair
+LegoJosh2003 No, Seattle should've stayed Seattle. Why does OKC deserve a team more than Seattle? No reason. Just a bunch if greedy bastards looking to make money.
The Browns kept the history while the Ravens were treated as an expansion team. The Charlotte franchise got back their history from 1988-2002 as the Hornets while the New Orleans franchise is treated as an expansion team. Seattle should get the history alone if they get the Sonics back
Not a fan of JVG but on this point he's completely right. When the Sonics come back to Seattle, in whatever form, they had better be allotted their old records, including their NBA Championship in 1979. The "Thunder" are a completely different team and need to earn their own records.
I would love to see the Supersonics come back. I love that 96 team and I like the idea of Gary Payton getting his franchise respects by having his jersey retired.
Also, some people have suggested relocating the Clippers... I think they have drawn a pretty big fanbase over the past few years, but the question is, how much do Clippers fans -really- care, and are they just bandwagons because the Clippers have been good in recent years? That's a legitimate question, not just an assumption. I can tell you Billy Crystal cares about his Clippers lol. I remember when he hugged Chris Paul after they won the first round of the playoffs one year, that was hilarious... he's been a fan since the 80's or 90's I think. Also, not sure if Steve Ballmer would be down to sell the team or move out of LA... he seems super into it
a sasuke seattle grunge fan...who would have guessed lol jk emo seattle lol...sasukes badass and so were the sonics ...if seattle just funds a new arena i guarantee the nba will come back there...they cant play until they get a new arena...they cant play in key arena...its not up to date ...i know seattle lost millions building the mariners arena and the seahawks arena so they didnt want to fund a new arena due to no money but thats why they left...
That's unfortunate because Jeff Van Gundy is very knowledgable when it comes to understand the core fundamentals of basketball. Some would say he is a good caster, but to me I will always view him as the coach who poured in his sweat and tears for the New York Knicks.
I love when Mike Breen says he wonders how many Sonics fans stayed with the franchise after the relocated, and Jeff Van Gundy bluntly says "zero". I really hope that's the way it is because I miss the Sonics and until Seattle gets a team back, Oklahoma City will remain my least favorite team in the NBA.
As a Seattle Supersonics fan, I don't give a shit about the Thunder. They are nothing but a bitter breakup with a girl. We cannot be friends or keep in touch. Keep the furniture, dog, plants. Just don't take any of my shit that I had before I met you!
‘How many Seattle SuperSonics fans have stayed with it and this is still their team ‘ ‘ZERO’ Tell Van Gundy I am one of the ZERO ……OKC mean nothing to me
I like how this is randomly in my recommended 5 years later when Jeff Van Gundy literally ranted about this exact same thing 6 days ago in Game 1 of the finals
After watching Sonicsgate blame Schultz and the city's politicans. NBA is a business and no one who owns a business wants to lose money like how that team was losing it.
they made it clear if they can't get the city to fund a new or rennovated arena. they will find alternatives including relocation despite being quoted about trying to move the Pelicians aka Hornets and if not Clay Bennet looked at Sonics. The city did not back the Sonics cause they fell off after GP left
fred coleman i know all this i live here but i don't care about why or how.I don't drink Starbucks and i don't watch NBA till we have a team again. That's the way it is.My protest
The whole debacle with Seattle and Oklahoma City is the epitome of why the NBA - and American sport in general - NEEDS promotion and relegation. Would eliminate so many of the major problems with American sports, with franchise relocation being at the top of the list.
It’s not that big of a problem. You’d have to create a second tier league just for that. There isn’t even a close second to the NFL, for instance. So where would a bad NFL franchise be relegated to?
@@luciusdomitiusaurelianus774 Top 4 clubs in second tier get promoted, winner of the second level championship gets number one draft pick. Not that difficult to implement.
The announcer has it 100% wrong, there is no shared history for the Sonics and Thunder. It was the only part of the settlement that benefited Seattle. No self-respecting Sonics fan would ever root for Clay Bennett's team.
There actually is shared history. Nickels settled and gave it up. That's why Sportscenter will show Kevin Durant as breaking Fred Browns franchise records and other BS like that. I agree whole heartedly with Van Gundy and I get pissed off everytime they do that, but they do technically have our history.
Thanks *****, I went and reread the settlement and it does say that they are sharing stats. At least Greg Nickels had the stones to keep the name, logo, and trophies all for Seattle. Still makes me mad that Nickels settled when it appeared that he might be winning the lawsuit.
Nope, it was part of the settlement Greg Nickels made. OKLAHOMA CITY -- The championship banners and trophies from the SuperSonics' best days will be staying in Seattle. But the flat screen TV in the coaches' locker room, that is going to Oklahoma City. sports.espn.go.com/nba/news/story?id=3545175
Right, the number of Sonics fans who are OKC Thunder Fans - very close to zero, if not zero. You can still admire Durant (and his sonics gear wearing ways) and never ever ever support the Thunder (The most ridiculously named team in the NBA up until The Pelicans.)
***** Or just add two expansion teams to make the divisions like the NFL. Sonics in Seattle, and maybe add a team in Baltimore. We don't need to take Oklahoma's only pro sports team.
WAY TO GO, THANKS FOR YOUR HONEST ASSESSMENT OF THE SEATTLE SUPERSONICS TRAJEDY,MAN,IT FEELS SUPER GREAT TO HEAR SOMEONE TELL IT LIKE IT IS, YOU'RE THE GOAT COACH JEFF VAN GUNDY,ALL THE PROPS TO YOU SIR 👏💎✌️✅✅✅
What's weird is we kept the name, logo, and jersey rights but lost the stats and shared history. I hope when the Sonics return that something is devised to return the rest of our heritage.
Man I miss my Sonics! And I was born and raised and still live in Indiana! Yes the Pacers are my favorite eastern conference and number two team. But I stopped watching the NBA and all other pro sports when the Sonics were taken.
Happy 35th Anniversary on winning NBA title Seattle! Well, no Championship again this year for OKC. Well Bennet, back to the drawing board. Hey, maybe you can blow up the team, trade Durant, Westbrook, Ibaka, get a shi#!load of #1 draft picks and try again in 10 years lol!
Thanks Jeff Van Gundy!! That's spot on buddy!! Soon as the Sonics left, these boys didn't follow to OKC. We followed Ray Allen to Boston, later BURNING his Sonics jersey when he went to Miami, These days we follow Portland!!
When JVG said they had 15 years of greatness from Kevin Durant taken away from them...that hit me Imagine the history of the Sonics PLUS Kevin Durant's career. A guy that "just wants to hoop" was perfect for Seattle.
We had Ray Allen here in Seattle. If you look it up on RU-vid they literally traded him at the same EXACT time they drafted Kevin Durant. Got Russell Westbrook in that same draft too if I recall correctly. Now while I personally think they traded Allen to dwindle fan attendance to make them easier to steal them from Seattle, imagine if they kept all 3 and added other pieces at the time like James Harden…
hope seattle gets the sonics back and their history like charlotte got from new orleans but jeff van gundy also has to respect some of the teams in the nba jumped cities, the nets are from new york then moved to new jersey then back to brooklyn. the clippers were once from buffalo new york. haters to this day point out the la lakers championship is 12 and not 17 because the first 5 nba titles came when they were in minneapolis. the grizzlies are from vancouver. the jazz are from new orleans. okc having the history of the sonics is not an isolated case, several teams have done it.
Clay Bennett was winning the fight to move the team, and Seattle's only defense for the Supersonics was Howard Schultz who just gave up after doing nothing to help. But the original argument was that Key Arena was an unfit basketball stadium, which is crazy. But hopefully the NBA opens an expansion draft like they did in 2004 to bring the Bobcats in( now the Hornets again) maybe Seattle is in line next.
John Jones The championship itself is still in Seattle at a museum but the Thunder essentially have our history which is why all the stats are merged together.
I was a Sonics fan from the beginning. Do I follow the Blunder? FUCK. NO. Do I hope they win a championship? FUCK TO THE NO. There's my answer. FUCK THE BLUNDER!
JVG will be missed. Hearing someone's genuine thoughts, for better or worse was unique at ESPN lately. Now with him gone, that disappears and lying and propaganda takes its place.
Why don't they do what the Thunder do what the Ravens and Browns did. Just keep the team and its history in Seattle, just take it's players and management and act like they were an expansion team that replaced the Sonics with all of it's players
But its not intelligent. No matter what any dumbass has to say about it. The Thunder and Sonics literally are still the same franchise. Facts are facts. Just because sonics fans and van gundy got their feelings hurt and rant people think that hes right when its literally wrong
seattle literally had the sonics stolen from them by david stern, clay bennett, Howard Schultz, and the rest of the okc people. Watch the documentary sonicsgate, explains pretty well what happened and how messed up the process was
The worst part about it is that they moved the team to the wrong place. If you were going to move, why OKC? I understand there was the whole New Orleans Hornets thing after Katrina, but damn. They should've just stayed in Seattle man.
+FonchCakes clippers to Seattle wouldnt be a bad idea. L.A. is a Lakers town anyway. problem is I think the clippers probably make too much money in L.A. as far as the media market
I'm sure the NBA is planning on returning to Seattle, but I think they're afraid to return to the market too early. They did so in Charlotte ('04), San Diego ('78)... but of course they should've never been moved!
That sad thing is, is that there are still a few remaining so-called Sonics fans that still think that the thunder are still the Sonics. I miss my Supersonics, the heart breaking thing is that right when we were about get stars they take our team from us. It would've been the Sonics and Seahawks running things and I think that's why they took our Sonics from us. Its a conspiracy lol
one day.... right? someday? Its been 12 years. They said it would be 5 years max. 0.00% of the population who were in sound mind when the SS were stolen, now are fans of OKC. In fact, Bron became my favorite player for beating them in the finals. GSW fan too. Everybody that beats OKC I got love for.
I think a really great model for how team relocations should go is what happened with the Charlotte Hornets and the Baltimore Ravens (same situation basically). In the end everyone is happy and has their own team and it doesn't feel like anyone's team was stolen. The original city gets to keep their name and records provided they can support a new team, and the new city gets an already established organization (so they don't have to deal with the troubles with success that most expansion teams face) and they get an original team name unique to their city. I really don't understand why this isn't the norm with relocations, seems like the most fair option that ends with the fans happy, instead of bitter and turning away from the league (I.E. losing the league money)
Im pissed my dad didn’t listen to me and buy the bucks for 500m and bring them to seattle.. I could of gotten giannis as a star player and just sign shooters like reddik, KCP, etc hire an assistant coach in ty lou, sign a pg someone get like rondo start running the motion fast break offence like steve nash taught me how to do when i went to his camp in victoria... then start trying to recruit a star player to team with giannis in the offseason no matter what the tax would be..
Why couldn't the NBA just give OKC a new team to begin with? If they got any team it should have been the Hornets/Pelicans because when Katrina happened OKC was home for them, the fans were good so they wanted a team there.
thx jeff! so glad okc lost durant!!!!! as a seattle fan, I can now wear some KD gear!!!!! didn't send 1 damn penny okc's way.......I want Durant to get a ring, so glad it won't be with that thief Bennet!
