He is right, portraying Buggy without defaulting to Joker must've been really hard. Especially since the script kind of calls for a Joker take. But Jeff managed to bring his own nuance. He did not play Buggy as a psychotic villain. Instead he played Buggy as someone, who pretends to be a manic clown, but deep down is a brooding, neurotic and kind of a mundane person. It is easy to imagine Buggy doing ordinary stuff like shopping for food in a store, while it is hard to see Joker doing the same. Like how in Episode 2 Buggy's mask slips few times and he talks to Luffy in a serious, weathered way instead of laughing or screaming for the public. An excellent performance.
Jeff's Buggy has a lot of "disgruntled artist" energy too. He feels like a director on an ego trip, or a bad actor hogging the spotlight. You're so right that the masked mundanity is a really important part of his character, and these theatrical elements Jeff brought to his performance all service that idea really well. The theatrical bluster hiding his pouty and childish attitude and insecurity was the perfect way to make Buggy not feel like a Joker knockoff
Oh my god, the story about Iñaki incessantly yelling for his hat and interrupting Jeff Ward's villainous dialogue, thus annoying him, is so ridiculously on brand for both of their characters. Luffy obsessively protecting his hat while not giving a damn about whatever else is happening is so quintessentially One Piece.
I could imagine that, in this specific dynamic, annoying the shit out of Buggy's actor brings out an even better performance. It's just one more example of how well these actors understand their roles.
He definitely succeeded in having a unique take on Buggy- sly, brooding, desperate, and witty. He feels more like a con man than a clown and I really like that. Moreover, Joker you couldn’t imagine ever breaking character, but Buggy has a kind of pent up rage and resentment that he lets slip constantly. Kind of makes you feel bad for him, like he actually hates his situation in life, whereas Joker lives for his never ending game show.
@@Dendansa Buggy to Luffy in Orange Town : "If you're the king of the pirates, what am I? A GOD?!" Notice he says "kami" in Japanese, which is different from 'God Usopp'.
He's really just got that resting mishievous face like he made his parents crazy when he was a kid haha. He'd be right at home in any of this sort of role for sure
He was the reason i watched the show. He went all in with the Chop Chop Cannon! and i looked at it going "ok this might not suck," i enjoyed his Buggy.
wow, well done. before I started watching the live action, I was also afraid that the Buggy character could feel similar to Joker persona, so well done to Jeff for consciously trying to avoid it.
I would like to see a Jeff Ward as Sanji. Just for like 10 glorious alternative universe minutes. I like Taz, but I feel like Jeff could take Sanji in a wild direction.
for some reason i had a feeling buggy wouldn't be like joker and that's cuz the think process of buggy and joker is different and their environment is way too different the only similarity is both are psychopathic clowns, one of em would take loan from irs and forget to pay cuz he doesnt have any while doing tax frauds and one would burn his own money so he won't have to pay irs taxes. On paper they might seem similar but they're in no way similar aside from being clowns
In the manga and anime? No not really, Joker is intimidating and unhinged, buggy is more a well actual clown, he’s a veteran pirate with an interesting past, he’s surprisingly realistic but still has a dream.
@@jeremygeller9145 i still feel like buggy was inspried by joker... jokers mouth is buggy's nose... i mean not modeled after, but just inspired by... like how every second character in onepiece is inspired by some real figure or in reference to some hisrtorical happenings. my gut feeling when writing this is: naah buggy is way to sweet a goofball to be compared to joker... on the other hand, he did try to make nami execute luffy with a cannon point blank... that's some kim jong un type execution pocedure stuff :D i am not saying buggy is like joker... joker would not fit into the onepiece world... but if you where to make joker fit into onepiece... that's buggy.
@@MrMCKlebeband I’m not saying buggy isn’t harmless, man is rampant murderer but we’ll are you caught up with the manga/anime or did you just watch the live action (don’t want to spoil)
@@jeremygeller9145 i've seen/read all the onepiece content multiple times, besides anime specials and movies... if the joker was a joke joke and fit made to fit into onepiece... that's buggy
