Jefferson Starship "Count on Me", 1978.

Was fortunate to see this group over 40 times in my life. The first time I saw them at the Memorial Auditorium in Sacramento just happened to be the first night the lead guitarist, Craig Chaquico played with them. He went to La Sierra High School in Sacramento where he was tutored by Jack Traylor I believe. For many shows this song was their opening song in concert. Eventually they changed that and opened with Somebody to Love. Almost always finished with Volunteers. Great memories!

I saw the band play this song live at the Knebworth Festival in 1978, where the band was second on the billing to Genesis. At the time they were playing there was not a big hoarde of people at the front of the stage, so I was able to get up really close to the stage. Unfortunately, no Grace Slick, she was sick, so couldn't appear. The first night on another gig that Grace Slick was absent caused a riot because she was one of the main draws. The violin player is Papa John Crech. Thanks for the memory, I Like Jefferson Starship but I prefer the music of the earlier band Jefferson Airplane.

Thank you, for reacting to this song off of the Dragon Fly album.. They had 4 records of great material in the mid 70's.. Dragonfly, Spitfire, Red Octopus, and Earth.. you can dig and find some gems. "Runaway" , "With Your Love", and "Count On Me" were decent hits for them, and deserving..

look to the summer of 75, All the world is gonna come alive... what a great line in the song, I graduated High School in the Bay Area California in the June 75 and that year and the 70s decade was magical to say the least. Mellow beautiful times. Wonderful music, Rock, Soul, Disco, so so incredible. Great concerts, great sports teams, no overpaid whiners. Such a fun time to grow up in.

Grace slick..... are all worth listening to..... and I have never heard another rock violinist this good..... except maybe one named Mark Wood. But mark is a heavy metal violinist. He is worth giving a listem to as well.

Check out their love ballads: With Your Love, Miracles and Runaway. Marty Balin establishes himself as the Hippie Crooner with a lot of tasty guitar and keyboard licks from Messrs. Chaquico and Freiberg and smooth bass licks from Sears as Grace Slicks lays on the echoey feminine background vocals. They made some magic back then.😊

I saw this band during their Red Octopus Tour. I was REALLY young. I saw them later as just the Starship several years later. The history of this band evolves from Jefferson Airplane in the 60s to Jefferson Starship in the 70s and then the Starship in the 80s.
@thenissilent
@thenissilent 8 месяцев назад
Nope. JA and JS are two separate bands. JA's bassist and guitarist left in '74 to play as Hot Tuna full-time, and since they owned 50% of the Airplane name, Grace and Paul had to recruit new musicians and come up with a new name.

No, the core of this group was 1/3 or a 1/2 of Jefferson Airplane. It's not (and legally can't be) Airplane without Jack Casady and Jorma Kaukonen, who left JA to play at Hot Tuna full-time in '74.

Two of the best Jefferson Starship albums were the first ones. They were political and have been largely forgotten, but some of Paul Kantner's best work. 'Blows Against The Empire' and then there's ''Sunfighter' which like 'Baron Von Tollbooth and the Chrome Nun' aren't proper JS albums but Paul Kantner and Grace Slick with lots of friends from the San Francisco Bands. But actually, they're the root of the band. Still, some of their best. BTW, Paul is 'Jefferson' and Grace is "The Chrome Nun'.
@thenissilent
@thenissilent 8 месяцев назад
Thanks for doing this vid! There are a lot of other good JS songs if you want to check them out. I recommend Caroline, Hyperdrive, Fast Buck Freddie, and St. Charles from the same era. Their lead singers Grace Slick and Marty Balin later left, and the band hired Mickey Thomas to replace them, ushering in a newer, heavier sound before Grace rejoined. They did some good things then too, but it wasn't as good as their 70s material.

If you want something more like the *Cantaloupe Island* suggestion you loved, next I'd maybe try *Gov't Mule* live, doing *Sco Mule* or *Medeski, Scofield, Martin & Wood* live, doing Scofield's tune, *A Go Go* It's all funk city with cool drum grooves and cool keys. Based on watching you all the time, if you don't LOVE both I'd be shocked.

Great song man, I really loved them back in the day. I was So fortunate to see them, they played for 3 hours and at least an hour was Jefferson Airplane (who I also saw). They were magnificent both times! I also saw another spin-off, Hot Tuna, several times, another great band who could endlessly jam but never bore you, those guys gave you chills and the first time we paid $3.50! For 4 hours. LOL! Try Hit Single #1 by Hot Tuna, studio original, you will see why we loved them. Enjoy! 🎵🎸🎤🎹🎶

How about a reaction to the man who opened for Starship for several shows in 1979 and blew them off the stage? That would be the legendary Rory Gallagher. Take a listen to the 1979 Rock Goes to College video of "Do You Read Me?" for a sample of his skills. Or "Shinkicker" at Montreux 1979 for another explosive number. Rory never received the public recognition her deserved since he refused to compromise his vision in pursuit of his music. No fancy dress, no 3 minute singles, no elaborate stage acts. Just pure talent. He is, however, revered by many guitar players such as Slash, Brian May, Alex Lifeson, Joe Bonamassa and the list goes on. Please take a listen!

@dawnmoore4329
@dawnmoore4329 Год назад
@@cindyfalstrom7231, yes and there's a few stories in regards to that. Their sound engineer was one of the few people who disrespected Rory so badly that Rory actually went ballistic and used the "f" word (which he NEVER did-its one of two times that anyone can remember him ever swearing). He quit the tour shortly thereafter.
@cindyfalstrom7231
@cindyfalstrom7231 Год назад
@@dawnmoore4329 No disrespect to Starship, but that seems to be an odd pairing. I think Rory was a very interesting character along with his great talent. If you like to read rock biographies, there is a good book about Rory called "Gallagher, Marriott, Derringer & Trower: Their Lives and Music" by Dan Muise. I bought the book because I am a huge fan of Steve Marriott, but I really enjoyed the section about Rory also. I haven't gotten around to the Derringer/Trower parts yet (-: It's a very interesting book. I just checked, Amazon has it new & used. I really love learning the stories behind the talent...
