I had the good fortune to race as a professional cyclist for the Jelly Belly racing team for 2 years. One thing I learned there was that "Bean Boozled" was its own viral success with RU-vid reaction videos. The Jelly Belly factory was a favorite destination for our kids' school field trips and scout activities. The kids would ride the train around the factory, see how the jelly bellies and other candies were made, lots of artwork made from jelly bellies, and the saving the best for last -- the free samples at the end of the tour. But this came to an end during the pandemic, as they closed the Pleasant Prairie WI factory in 2020. I don't think they do anything at the North Chicago factory. California is still open, if you happen to be close to that location. Of course, the goal of the free tours was for you to buy stuff. Our favorite was getting the big bags of Belly Flops. Large bags of beans that did not meet quality control. Shapes were wrong, mismatched colors, etc... Tasted the same. Best thing was that these bags were at pretty good discount.

I remember once visiting the jelly belly factory. They say that they spend a lot of time experimenting with flavor until they get the jelly bean flavor just right. Like, I guess instead of just something that tastes approximately "cherry" they make sure that eating the jelly bean and eating a cherry both give you pretty much the same flavor. The blueberry flavor that they make is probably the only candy I've ever had that actually reminds me of a blueberry, rather than some abstract "blue" candy flavor like "blue raspberry" or some other made up one.

They used to have a jelly belly factory/distribution center in Pleasant Prairie, Wi. It was a fun destination for friends and family who had kids from out of town. They threatened to close it around 2017, then changed their mind when Haribo announced they were opening a factory up the street from them, and then suddenly changed their mind during the pandemic, and just ended everything. Haribo is either opening soon, or just opened.... The gummy bears guys. I thought they were going to keep it open forever and ever when I went on the tour in about 2018, and they had added a small batch test kitchen to the end of the tour where they could work on ideas and get immediate diverse public feedback. I have taken countless free tours of the Jelly Belly factory where they show you the history of the candy, the machines that make them, and tons of art made out of jelly beans! My favorite part was the free small pack of jelly beans you get at the end of the tour. The gift shop is enormous with every flavor and more. There's also a section just for fudge. My dad's favorite thing to buy was their "belly flops," which are 2-lb bags of jelly beans that weren't high-quality enough to sell (e.g., shaped wrong). Overall, I'm a big Jelly Belly fan and I think they deserve the credit they receive if not more! @@tylerboothman4496 Yes! Those things were softer and the "filling" inside felt like they took shortcuts when making and didn't heat up the sugar enough so it almost had a crunch to it when you bit down.

I love Jelly Belly so much to the point where I hope they never go out of business. I've tried every jelly bean out there and I have yet to find one that's better. The problem that I'm having is that they're getting harder and harder to find. A lot of candy shops that did distribution are closed and now most retail companies don't sell individual flavors anymore. Plus they don't have most of their big name licensing like Disney and Hello Kitty. Maybe things changed but something tells me they've peaked.

I’m canadian and I think if you had the time and energy to cover Giant Tiger it would be amazing. I would love to know why I’m so goddamn addicted. Our city is getting our second giant tiger (Sault Ste Marie Ontario) and it’s kinda bizarre. We had two Walmarts for like 2 seconds or so and it didn’t work out. I know giant tiger is a lot smaller and lower quality but frig Canadians love our GT boutique!!!

Nice video! Yes! Jelly Belly! Definitely my go-to when I visit mall candy stores (yes they still exist!). My favorite flavor would have to be the sour orange one from the Jelly Belly Sours set; the sours in general are the ones I go for. This is an interesting transition for the company too from one type of seasonal candy to another associated with a completely different holiday. Come to think of it though the big candy companies do make seasonal candy for every holiday that has a candy that goes with it.

I live in the San Francisco Bay Area and the location 90 minutes east of SF in Fairfield, CA is their corporate headquarters. I went there 9 years ago for the tour and it was awesome to see how they make the beans! They also have a huge jelly belly store on site with pretty much every flavor they make in bulk. If you come to the SF Bay Area, it’s a must see! You’ll only spend a few hours there, but it’s cool to be a part of history!

Back in August of 2017, I met Herman G. Rowland, the chairman of jelly belly. We got started talking about cars in Monterey and he said “wait here”. He went to his Ferrari, grabbed a box of bean boozled and a bag of not yet released Krispy Kreme jelly beans and he even gave me one of his business cards. It was shaped like a jelly bean and I still have it. Super cool guy.

A good rule of thumb when you're in the candy corn business is that you'll find a lot more customers manufacturing...well...almost anything else. And to answer the question posed in the outro, I'm one of those weirdos who loves artificially grape flavored anything, and that includes Jelly Belly beans.

I also like how they put out advertisements and packaging notes on how you can combine flavors to make stuff like peanut butter and jelly sandwiches, or various other combos. I was poor growing up, and Jelly Bellies were a little pricey, so I don't have a favorite, but generally I liked the fruity and soda flavored ones.

The Bertie Botts Every-Flavor Beans are a nice way to end up with a candy dish of nothing but pepper, earwax, and vomit flavored jelly beans after all the edible ones have been consumed. They really didn't have to stick with what had been mentioned in the books up to that point...

Very well done! And even though I was very familiar with every bit of the story, I really enjoyed your telling of it! I worked in sales and marketing at Jelly Belly from 1989 to 2005, my first 12yrs building the international (export) business, then the last few years as overall head of marketing. I was lucky enough to be there and play a part in JB Sours, the Harry Potter flavors, and JB Sports Beans. An amazing company and culture. Even on rough days, all i had to do was leave my office, walk 100yds to our Visitor Center, and see the joy in the faces of visitors from around the world. It would always put me back in a good mood! Oh, yeah, my favorite flavor is still Juicy Pear. Thanks again for a great portrait of a cool family and company!
