"Bop" is a lot older than the 90s. It is derived from bebop, a style of jazz that developed in the 1940s. The shortened form eventually became a description for any upbeat, catchy song. The family-friendly "Kids Bop" albums is/are probably one of the more recognizable modern uses of the term.
