I too was a child in Germany and taught myself to cross stitch and embroidery. This brought back so many memories and happy tears to my eyes. My father was stationed in Peden Barracks which was near Wertheim am Main which was near Wuerzburg south of Frankfurt/Weisbaden. We lived in housing and on the economy. I don't think I have any treasures like you have. Only memories. But it was fun remembering going to the store down the hill and shopping and coming home and making things. My mother did not do hand work. She sewed by machine. As you know tv was limited and there was not a lot to do if you were between 9 and 12 years old. The time period was 1960 to 1962. As the Berlin wall was going up. Thanks for the trip down memory lane. It was fun.
I love how one of the flowers in the print makes it look like Ellie has an eye! That flannel looks divine! Flannel on the front and minky/cuddle on the back.....super cuddly!! The GingerSnaps are sooooo cute!!
I only have three jelly roll blocks left to make. Can’t wait to start arranging them on the design wall. I remember doing latch hook. It made my fingers hurt from pulling the yarn tight because I would sit and work on the canvas for hours.
Loved the stroll down memory lane. I remember embroidery knits, beading, and my mother and grandmother doing latch hooking in 60s and early 70s with kitsch and old wool clothing. I did the Reader's Digest crafts but made Angel's and trees. Happy memories. Happy Holiday to all.
Reader's digest Christmas 🎄!!! I'm part of that club too! My mom taught me how to embroider, see and crochet. She tried to teach me to knit, but I think by that time I was in high school and had my mind on boys. Making things with your hands is sooo good for the soul!
The Gingersnap Kids are sew sew cute. I am going to use the planning sheet in shorter timeframes right now - reviewing my year end, end of the year projects, and then to plan my "to do" for January. You and I did many of the same crafts - they were such fun. I love the Sampler treasure. Thank you for sharing these treasures.

❤️ the gingers! Such wonderful treasures and keepsakes you have - thanks for sharing. I'm having my first experience of using cuddle on the back of a quilt. Unfortunately I put it on the back of a queen size quilt panel that is part of an online class of ruler work. WOW! So heavy to do FMQ and wrangle it around on my domestic machine to use the rulers! Won't do that again but it will be wonderful once I get it completed. It will just take a lot longer than I planned for. Cuddle is on the back of another queen quilt - I won't be using rulers on that one! So the latter, and a jelly roll quilt may not be done with my FMQ by the end of December. 😅😂
When you were tallking about the tree, I remember when I was first married you took the big thick phone books and folded the bottom in and sprayed it and it was a xmas tree.
Gingersnaps mug rug is so so cute. Just love it. I need to start a sewing list for Christmas 2021 and put this on it for granddaughters. I am proud of myself this year as I finished 3 full size quilts as Christmas gifts. One was the jelly snowflake. Put the binding on last one Saturday. That’s cutting it close. In the early 80's I taught all types of needlework and sold kits through a "party plan". I enjoyed the teaching more than the selling. LOL Not the best business model. I still have some of the samples I made and a couple kits. I still love needlework, but quilting has become much more important to me.
I also have made things, but with my aunt and cousins. We made Christmas trees with a pie pan, plaster of Paris and silver holie foily stuff that you would around a stick in the plaster and decorated. We also baked cookies and sent off to my cousins husbands in Vietnam.
I took inventory of the baby quilt tops that needed to be finished a few years ago. There were 11. Made a goal to quilt and finish these doing at least 2 a month. Then I had to find a place to donate them. They are all done in about 3 months.
My mother and grandmother taught my sister and I how to cross stitch when we were very young....on gingham. Then our work was made into an apron. I still have my first apron....no I do not make spaghetti sauce in it. Merry Christmas Pat....thanks for the stories.
Yeah I went through my whole projects to finish. I found 26 projects to finish and only three that need binding and so far six to quilt. I also separated a lot of stuff to start and only ended up with 36 projects that I really want to finish next year. All projects are in my planning book and scheduled out on my 12 month calendar. Then I have a cross stitch journal that only has six projects to finish. I only have two sew along projects that start in March and are done monthly so I need to add those to my project book and schedule on my calendar.
I love the basket and the stitcher. I love the dates and the kits. The Gingerkids are fantastic. Isabel did a fantastic job. That is so cool. And the pages to get organized are working for me. I have plans and projects written down. I am.on a mission..I am going to get organized. And clean up and find all my projects done. And Christmas presents early for next year.
I would love to use minty on the back. But in Louisiana, I don’t know if I would get to use it very much. Also I use small tag labels that I sew into the binding on the back of my quilts. I prefer these to sewing on a large written label.
I've worked with flannel before and it always stretches. I really think if I'd paid more for it, the fabric wouldn't have shrunk. I took a good look at the stuff I have and it seems to be somewhat loosely woven. That's not good, is it? LOLOL I think I'll go shopping when my local fabric store opens again and see what I can find for "better" flannel. Maybe I'll have better luck. Thank you for everything you do, Pat. I don't think I've met a person with as much energy as you have. Always smiling with a few giggles thrown in. Some days this year we've all needed that and you provided. Oi.... samplers in cross stitch have a huge following- very historical and geographical pieces- it’s a whole genre of cross stitch of its own in my opinion
Just wondering, the quilting on the front looks different than the quilting on the back. The minky side has rows of round circles. I know I have quilted with minky before and found it difficult. Was a special technique used here?
