Ms. Coleman is an actor's actor. She puts in the work, grounds herself and gives remarkably truthful performances. AND she keeps getting better! Watching her grow from Doctor Who, to Victoria, The Cry and now, the Serpent into a singular artist is a real privilege. I can't wait to see what she accomplished next. Bravo.
After seeing how great of an actress she is on Dr. Who, I'll watch anything that has Jenna Coleman in it. Coleman/Capaldi, the best Dr Who duo in the whole franchise.
This interview was really insightful- you can see how much thought Jenna put in to bringing this character to life. I watched the show over the course of a week- it was captivating. For those commenting on her accent, I’d point out that this is a British production and that 99% of their intended audience wouldn’t be able to discern an accurate Quebec accent from a dodgy one. So, whilst they’d want to do their best, I doubt her being an English access gave them a moments pause. She brought a lot of publicity to it as she’s a critically acclaimed, well known actress. I think she did a fantastic job!
The way she looks at you when you’re asking her a question like at 2:00 and then that bonus nod and smile as she agrees and builds off of your comments thereafter You can see her drinking in your thoughts and ideas and honing in on the precise point of your question as she devises her potential responses As someone who loves the mind and intellect and the rich inner world that tends to come with a person more introverted and knowing Jenna is a pretty deep thinker, I just love those subtle moments
Absolutely! What a contrast from the usual products from the entertainment/fandom industrial complex! The art of filmmaking is unimaginably complex and depends so much on the effort of so many to act in concert to produce a work of art such as The Serpent. To have a great interviewer who’s intelligent and sensitive ask such insightful questions reveals a little of what contributes to that final result we see. Definitely subscribed to this channel!
I didnt know that the director changed. I didnt really like the first 6 episodes, kinda tiring. But the last two episodes have been great. Maybe thats because of the change of the director?
Brilliant show! Jenna is such an incredible, beautiful, talented and amazing actress. She played Marie Andreé to perfection. 👏👏👏🙌🙌. All our love to her. ❤❤❤❤❤.
i. fascinating thoughts from Jenna Coleman! ii. equally fascinating is Mara's shift from American English in her first segment to (Southern) British English in her follow-up questions...
Jenna was excellent in The Serpent. She looks so cute in glasses. Was so relieved when they finally caught Charles in Nepal. She sounded to me 100% French in the show which is impressive when you think she only studied it for a few weeks but the pronounciation was spot on.
Like M T said, it was terrible. Almost insulting. She doesn't have that specific Québec accent. How do I know this, well, I'm a Quebecer myself. However, even though most people think I'm French because I have what I call an international accent, I do know what the Québec French sounds like, I grew up surrounded by it. And Jenna... well... She sounds just like any anglo-saxon person trying to speak French. Takes time to master an accent. It would have been better to cast a quebecer actress. I mean, it's not like we don't have great bilingual talents here. I think Caroline Dhavenas of "Hannibal" fame could have been a great replacement!
@@alexandrecotetessier9959 I thought it sounded good but then again i dont speak French and certainly am not familiar with the Quebec accent.I realise it takes time to develop an accent. For me i can put on an Australian accent easily.
I thought it sounded amazing but given how unforgiving the French/Quebecois are with how their accents are handled I wondered what they would've thought about it. Now I know!
@@Katlick imagine that you are watching ‘The crown’ on Netflix but actually the actress playing the Queen has a huge Indian accent and Philip an Italian one. You might still enjoy the series overall but I doubt you’d find these actors very credible for these specific roles. Yet because you’re not French, nobody would tell you that you’re unforgiving I’m sure;) Also just to be clear, Im not talking about how she makes the French accent when she speaks English, Im talking about the scenes when she is supposed to speak French.
She's Marie, and Joanna, and Victoria, and Clara. And she's adorable. I have yet to see this one, and have heard 'the show slows down'; Jenna's explanation of the Covid-demanded changes in script and shooting explains why. She has become a favorite to watch; "The Cry" was a great study in victim to vindictive and back again. The International Emmy nomination was well-deserved. What will she do next? Love the look with glasses as well.
I like Jenna Coleman and she is a good actress including in this series. But her French was at times impossible to understand. It made it difficult for me to find her credible in the role in certain scenes.
@@walkwithnaios4334 I am a native french and it sounds horrible. I could barely understand and had to put the subtitles. She speaks very slowly and she spoke phonetically, some words just didn’t come out properly. It is quite obvious she doesn’t speak french at all. I believe she is a great actress but this was a wrong cast or they should have rewritten the character so that she doesn’t have to inflict that to our french ears.
I've lived with French, dated French and her accent was spot on in my opinion. She sounds just like a friend of mine, so to an English ear hearing a French accent I'd say 10/10. Infact, she sounds similar to Virginie doyen
@@misstijen4084 you mean Ledoyen? As for the accent do you mean when she spoke in English? I thought the french intonations was accurate as well if the intent was to portray a french person very fluent in English. But she is portraying a québécoise so they don’t have this “french” accent when they speak English so it’s not accurate at all. I guess you were not referring to her french. Just in case, let me repeat that to a french or Canadian French hear, it sounds ridiculous. It sounds like any Brit who doesn’t speak french and is trying to speak it phonetically.
Where’s the full interview? This one starts off several minutes after it started. I’m looking for the full interview I saw awhile ago to send to friends. Couldn’t even see it in my history! Weird!
Strange question to ask about "the moment" when they decided to have her reading magazines. Of course it must have been in the script...you can't just suddenly improvise some magazines from the 1970s into existence. But interesting interview and actor.
You can tell she is a good actress in the show but her french is really off. Not really her fault as they still casted knowing she doesn’t speak a word. For all the natives every scenes when she speaks in french are catastrophic as it is impossible to believe that a French Canadian would be so bad in their own language and have this weird pronunciation and such a non neat and slow flow.
She was fabulous and gorgeous, but as a Canadian, I couldn't buy her accent. She would have seemed less glamourous if she wasn't speaking European French, I think.
@@guydeborde299 I was just wondering because I have learned and able to coomunicate in 4 languages, I would never say anything like you did if you know how hard to learn other languages :)
@@ayakafujita i’m a french teacher (from quebec) and the king is right, her accent is awful. i wouldn’t say this about my students, even those struggling, but this is her job, the castings’ job, and it was horrible. i also speak 4 languages, and yes, learning a language is a challenge. never put someone down for trying, but this part was not for her. in hollywood, quebec roles are always played by anglos who do a bad job of imitating parisian, while there are plenty of bilingual canadian actors who don’t get cast. i’m used to beginners’ french from learners with a wide range if accents, but i had to rely on subtitles for a lot of her scenes...
It’s a British production and I’d guess 99% of their intended audience would have no idea if the accent was off. They would notice a recognisable actress with lots of critical acclaim. She was a fantastic choice IMO.
@@WIDBAU I understand the marketing logic but from an acting perspective it’s quite troubling. I think they probably thought they could make her sound convincing.
Why cast a French actor to play someone from Vietnam? And why that horrible and completely wrong French and English accent for a guy that is supposed to be from south-east asia?
Are you joking? Her accent is horrible. It’s like any British trying to speak french. If there is one thing wrong with the show it’s her french and I am a native.
@@boink800 what does my English writing have to do with her accent? And i am native french / Italian. The French Canadian accent is extremely famous in france as we like to poke on it. But it’s not Jenna’s french, hers is very similar to any anglophone speaking french. It is evident she learnt her text phonetically without really understanding what is the French Canadian flow.
I dunno how it’s possible that they put so much emphasis on her being a French-Canadian but her accent is purely Parisian. Did they not have enough in the budget for a dialect coach? She did a fine French accent all thing considered, but the Québec accent was non-existent
Ok so if you say that her accent is ‘purely Parisian’ you probably don’t speak French, which is okay, but before saying this it would be good to make sure it’s correct 😅 Or maybe this was ironically said? Actually the question is ‘why did they choose an actress who clearly does not speak French AT ALL to play the role of a French speaking character?’ It’s a pity because I can see she is gifted as an actress but how can she play that role while having 0 basics of French? Really the enigma of this series!
@@MathiasTrb That didn’t address anything I’ve said. I’ll say it again in case you misread, she does not sound Québécois when she speaks French. That dialect, regardless of where it’s from in France is not from Canada, which is where the character is from.
@@FireRayquaza24 No, you didn’t just say she doesn’t have sound like she’s from Québec you said ‘her accent is purely Parisian’ and ‘she did a fine French accent’. I mean it’s clearly written in your comment so I don’t really see what ‘misunderstanding’ there could be here...My answer clearly address what you wrote.
Actually her accent was a bit problematic (speaking as a french person). She has a very thick british accent when she speaks french, and needs subtitles to be understood. Her french was very good grammatically, but really nothing to do with Canadian way of speaking, which is how they characterize her. I think every french-speaking person was really confused by this :)
I guess that the key audience is english-speaking and if that is your case then the quality of her french is irrelevent. As a French-Canadian, I can tell you that her french is incomprehensible and that I had to read the subtitles to understand what she was saying. Even the off-screen voice of her mother was completely detached from anything Québécois. She did a wonderful acting job and I totallly got into the show as well as her performance but the french was a disappointment.
Maybe it is her acting in this serie ? I don't know, but I thought it was her work in portraying Marie-Andrée and Monique. She had a lot of facial expressions in Doctor Who. And a lot of emotions in The Cry. I don't know, simply my point of view.
Really dude!? Don't you think you have to be cold and restrained when you're drugging people and scaming them all day long? She was playing a a real life person who didn't have a lot of personnality
Jenna's extremely versatile and when she's playing an expressive character, she nails it. Just watch her in Doctor Who. She can say more with her facial expressions than most actresses can with their entire bodies. Monique was SUPPOSED to be a cold person and therefore less expressive because she's the lover of a serial killer.
