Wow, is that the actual River Thames that Ms. Jacques is swimming in?? London has come a long way since Dickens’ day! Although, on second thought, I suppose I knew the Thames is clean? Ages ago I lived on it, after all - albeit in Oxford, where it’s called the Isis - on a moored double-wide barge, and I’d watch swans paddle around right outside my berth’s “side scuttle” aka my berth’s window… and my two barge-mates, who were both gay, would gawk at the fit rowing teams as they zoomed by outside. The water always seemed quite clean and lovely! I guess, in my mind, downstream in London it was somehow a different river - and in fairness, from our boatyard on the Jericho commons we could easily fling a stone across the Thames, it felt more like a deep fast stream! But I don’t know why imagined London’s stretch of the Thames as being polluted… and I’m so happy to be wrong!!
