I remember watching this match at the time and it was the first time Capriati looked so stressed and clearly feeling the pressure of expectation and she was still only 15 here. Phenomenal talent but way too much for someone so young.

Damn Capriati was hitting with some serious heat during this era. The only thing that kept her away from winning slams at this time was pressure, inexperience, and the juggernauts that were Seles & Graf.

I think Jen actually hit with more heat in the early part of her career than during and after her comeback. Her serve and backhand actually seemed bigger when she was a teenager. Later, she had her best results when she was super fit and played great defense. I thought it was a little perplexing that she held back on her power.
@zeddeka
@zeddeka Год назад
@@1Rdby I think her technique changed quite a bit on her comeback. She seemed to have changed her forehand quite a bit to make it a bigger shot, but her backhand seemed to suffer. Her also also seemed patchier.
@zeddeka
@zeddeka Год назад
I think she also could be a bit one dimensional, and was very vulnerable to players who could mix up the pace with slice. She lost every single one of her matches against Novotna for example, and of course only beat Graf once. You can see Gabi using the slice well here at times too. she also of course had that shock loss at the 1992 US Open Patricia Hy who also had a solid slice backhand.
@1Rdby
@1Rdby Год назад
@@zeddeka Yes, the forehand became her biggest weapon, but the serve and backhand were a weakness later. Backhand to backhand battles she was struggling with the likes of Serena, Venus, Lindsay, Monica, Kim and Justine.

Capriati always vulnerable to players who could mix up pace and spin, particularly with slice. She had a particularly bad record against Novotna (losing all her matches against Jana).

Gaby was the best of her peers at playing with the most variety, and an all court stacking style. She won this match with that variety and managed to put enough pressure on her opponent at the net. Jen had beaten Gaby at the prior grand slam, but this time Gaby was more assertive. Gaby on the other hand played so timidly in the semi to follow and was oddly flat and passive for some reason.
@zeddeka

It's strange - Gabi lost all the Australian open semi finals she reached really easily. She barely showed up mentally for them.
@moviefan4life166

It’s so true. Monica in 93 was always going to be tough, and Monica was so on fire in that match as was Steffi years prior, but the loss to MJ after having beaten her so easily two weeks prior was a very bad result. In 94, I think it was bad luck as Gaby was quite sick after her win over Jana in the quarters and was physically exhausted in the semi. I’d say of all her most regrettable career losses, the 92 semi must be one of the top few. I will say, MJ did play so uncharacteristically aggressive and came forward way more than usual. She knew she had to change something after the loss at Sydney and did play very well. Still, Monica are her up easily. I think the slow hardcourt hurt Gaby because it was hard for her to come to the net and that’s when she was at her best. The quicker us open courts suited Gaby much better.

@@moviefan4life166 I was re-watching the 1989 semi final against Graf recently. Steffi played well, but it was really striking. After the first 6 games or so, Gabi just stopped playing. It reminded me very much of the 1991 french open semi final against Seles.

Gaby played a fantastic match and was at confident best. She had a great 1991 year winning 5 titles and almost wining Wimbledon. She won in Sydney thumping world No.5 aranxtra Sanchez Vicario 6-1 6-1. Jennifer was playing great tennis too but gaby’s variation and net play won get the match. From 1990 to 1993 Jennifer was ranked always between 6-10 in the world whilst Gaby was ranked 3-5. Jennifer at this stage of her career really did struggle in big matches v the top 5 players at the time steffi, Monica, Gaby, Martina and Aranxtra. 1992 was Gaby’s last great year winning 5 titles including big wins over steffi, Monica and Martina Navratilova. Thr she started to struggle. Especially after her horror 1993 qtr final loss to Mary Joe Fernandez at the French Open after being 6-1 5-1 up then losing 10-8 in the 3rd. Tho she would still continue to be ranked inside the top 10 till April 1996 she was never a threat at majors tho she always reached the qtr finals or better she struggled to get past players ranked highs then her such as steffi, Monica and Aranxtra

Well said. Gaby played inspired tennis right up to that French open loss in 93. She was never the same thereafter and had too many coaching changes from Kirmayer to Vilas to Ralston and back to Kirmayer and then finally Juan Nunez. Juan was great for her. It’s a pity she didn’t find him sooner, because her outside interests were taking over.

Talented without a doubt, but she never even made a slam final prior to her comeback and she took full advantage of that window when the Williams were just beginning to establish themselves and Steffi had retired and Hingis was on the decline. She would never have been goat and was fortunate to win 3 slams, one of which against a nervous and very young clijsters and one of which hingis gifted by blowing a commanding lead and a number of match points. Her one shining moment in the early part of her career was the Olympics. However, that was the weakest Olympics ever as Monica, Gaby and Martina weren’t even allowed to play so the event lost the number 1, 3 and 4 before it even started. I do think she could have won more slams, yet Davenport only won 3 slams too and she was incredibly talented too. I’d say Gaby and Jana definitely should have won a few more too. The 91 Wimbledon for Gaby and the 93 Wimbledon for Jana were too examples. Arantxa on the other hand was one heck of an over achiever who maxed out her capabilities 110%.

Actually most of the top players starting playing the aus open by the early 80’s when prize money increased. Probably around 1982 when evert and Navratilova started attending the aus open. Gaby was ranked 3 in the world and seeded no.2 as steffi did not play due to injury. Jennifer was seeded 5 ranked no.6! Gaby was on a huge winning streak won in Sydney and made the semifinals at the Australian open without dropping a set. Then played a shocker the next round and lost 6-1 6-4 to Mary Joe Fernandez who Gaby played in the semifinals in Sydney and won 6-3 6-4 then trashed aranxtra in the final 6-1 6-1

I’d say Monica probably was the first. She was a few years older than Jen and when she arrived players noted that they didn’t see anything like it before. Jen was part of the change too and their us open semi in 91 was a great example of some amazing tennis. Monica was just so much more successful than Jen though.

@@moviefan4life166 Seles did hit hard but not as hard as Capriati or Graf. What Seles did well better than most on top of hitting the ball well was retrieving and made less errors and hit great angles. Though Jen and Graf ( especially on forehand even before stabbing ) hit the ball much harder.

@@andrews6341what a joke comment. Mary Carillo often said no one hit the ball harder shot for shot than Monica. Monica had better rally tolerance and point construction than either graf or Capriati. Plus Monica was much more accurate and hit far fewer errors than the two.
@moviefan4life166
@moviefan4life166 5 месяцев назад
Chicago phd. I agree. Monica hit the ball harder than most ever did and she took it so early that she robbed you of time. The only player who actually hit the ball even harder was Mary Pierce. Even Monica said Mary hits the ball so incredibly hard it’s amazing. When Mary was. Dialed in she was able to rout anyone, even Steffi prime Steffi 6-2,6-2 in the French open. Jennifer did not hit the ball as hard as Monica and Steffi did off the forehand side only. Then the Williams sisters arrived and they hit every ball from serve to groundstroke harder than anyone and started a new generation.

@thb1091 5 месяцев назад
@@andrews6341You're right in a way. Seles ended points with power but set up those finishing strokes through a lot of variety (in terms of both pace and tactics) and point construction. Her average rally ball was looped for the most part and she generated pace via taking the ball early (I think in the moment the combination of how early she took the ball to rob her opponents of time + how synchronized her grunt was with her stroke motion resulted in people overreacting and thus overstating her actual power). That's different from both Capriati (whose shots were harder/heavier on average given her grinding style) and Graf (who hit flat FHs into the corners at every opportunity and thrived on accelerating pace).

Jennifer somewhat unlucky to draw Gaby and Steffi in the Australian open quarter finals in 92 /93. On rebound Ace, she may actually have had a slightly better chance against Monica Seles.

Jen drew Gaby and Steffi a lot for sure. She played Gaby in the 91 Wimbledon and is open, and the 92 AO and Wimbledon. I do think Monica was incredible in the AO though. She won 3 in a row from 91-93 and then stopped playing. Monica could have easily won at least a handful more. Jen rarely had good slam performances against any of the top 4-5.
@zeddeka
@zeddeka 7 месяцев назад
@@moviefan4life166I think against Monica, Jennifer might have got more into the kind of slug fest match that she liked. Jennifer was on record saying that she didn't like slice backhands and didn't deal well with them. So on rebound ace, she might have had the style of match with Monica that she was more comfortable with. Was thinking also of how Jennifer beat Monica a few months later on a different type of hard court in Miami.
@moviefan4life166
@moviefan4life166 7 месяцев назад
Th8257. That’s a fair point. I think a lot of their results hinged on serve. Jen had an effective first serve and when she got in a high percentage on a hardcourt it helped her beat Seles. Clay suited Monica well vs Jen as she thrashed her 2 and 2 that year. Jen was definitely a threat on any hard court. I feel the first serve was actually critical for Gaby too. When she hit her high 80’s low 90’s well placed serves and got a high percent in, she negated her vulnerable second serve.
