Back in 1984, I think that was the year, I was a player in the lounge at Caesar's Palace, Atlantic City. I was working with Cheryl VanCleave, a Miss America contestant. Jennifer Holliday was at Caesar's while we were there so we all got to go see her. The band was a bunch of stragglers, some cover band out of Florida. They were ok. But Jennifer made them look good! Honestly, she could have blown us all away if it was a grade school orchestra. I remember crying through almost every song. I have never heard a live performance like she gave. Hands down, the greatest female singer that has ever lived. I got to see her right after the release of I am Love as a single and they played it all the time in the casino as a preview. But nothing compared to hearing this woman sing live. I still get goosebumps whenever I hear a Jennifer Holliday song. Thank you so much Jennifer for sharing your greatest gift with all of us mere mortals!
Just SPECTACULAR!! I'm 4evr crying just understanding what she had to go through -- however, I'm so happy that she has risen in spite of the many obstacles that she had to go through.
This is a GREAT performance of her hit. I look at these performances and wonder what the hell the music industry was thinking when they passed up an opportunity to promote this God's gift. CRAZY!!!
I am so "glad" to see so many other people using the word "underrated" when discussing Jennifer. I think she's a real treasure and should have had bigger commercial success. She's wonderful and one of a kind.
it was one fantastic season with beautiful songs and different life.... for all we are looks like a sweet dream who suddenly finish... amazing magic years ...i wish i could turn back that magic time. Now so sad there's no good music like yesterday.Jennifer Holiday she had strong and sweet voice,so beautiful song and words.
I don't know why this woman was so underrated. She has one powerful voice that stands alone without all the bells and whistles so many of these so called singers today have to have to sound good
If she had the body type of Whitney or the like she probably would have been big (no pun intended). But there wasn't all this inclusion stuff back then like there is now. It's not just about talent -- Universe's timing plays a big factor too.
Amazing! Every song that she has ever recorded soars with intensity and passion. Jennifer Holliday is undeniably one of this century's greatest gifts from God! Blessings Always ~
I remember being a little boy in the 80's falling in love with this song and Jennifer holiday' s voice . This is my favorite Jennifer Holiday song!!@ WOW ! Jennifer and Whitney had a sound on the 80's that has not been replaced.
Flatfoot, belting, squalling, and crooning.... giving us everythin we need....sang the song Jennifer!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! And she wasn't distracted by the background singers. Mama stayed right in her spot!!!!!!
She hit that song right out of the ball park! OMG!!!! I think she must have gotten to run the bases four or five times around with that powerful delivery!!!! Lol!!!!
I love this osng it brings back great memories of that era, she is one true Diva 4 sure. I would luv to see this beautiful woman in concert any day, im just happy that she is still here. The record industry is very vicious and rutheless, just happy that she's still alive among the living. So sad how all these artists end up dead these days and going broke with little or no money to live off, i think there ought to be a law to prevent this from happening. Much love to u Jennifer Holliday.
I LOVE THIS SONG U R THE THE LADY JENNIFER HOLIDAY I SAW YOU IN CONCERT IN CHICAGO IN 1996 ON & ON ALBUM I WAS ON A LAYOVER I TAKE YOU EVERY WHERE WITH ME WHEN I AM GOING THREW TURBALANCE I PUT MY EARPHONES AND I PLAY THIS SONG THIS SONG IS NOT JUST A MAN OR WOMEN IT ABOUT GOD AS WELL HE IS LOVE I LOVE MISS HOLIDAY AND THANK YOU FOR JUST BEING JENNIFER GOD BLESS YOU AND YOU DONT HAVE TO WORRY ABOUT YOUR AWARD HEAR GOD HAS YOUR REWARD THANK YOU FOR JUST BEING JENNIFER HOLIDAY.
Love JH. Sang this in 1989 for a talent show in college; got 1st runner up. I really need to get the cassette tape of my performance onto something current. ....
+Micah Kayslinowski The song hit #2 for 3 weeks on the R&B chart. Perhaps should have or could have made #1, but #2 is still wonderful. As for Pop/Hot 100 success, in 1983 Black artists were still struggling for crossover airplay as the dust had not yet settled from the disco backlash. This was the year that the success of "Thriller" began to turn the tide.
Spirit Angelfish Well that's great to hear! Some artists make such memorable and timeless music, that it only takes a few hits for them to remain legendary for life.
The music industry is a very hard one. She was too soulful and then the depression hit her to hard so she started eating and gaining weight . Well that mixture killed her success. People who sing like this are a dime a dozen, they are all in the churches , you have to have a balance, look the part have the stage presence. Oh at the end of the day you just may ask your self is it really worth it!
Didn't know that 😳!! But I can definitely hear it now that you mention it! His songs DEFINITELY have a signature just like Babyface or Diane Warren or Missy Elliot.
I always wondered why she never made it BIG. I think its because her voice was TOO BIG and she didnt LOOK like the IDEAL performer.. so sad.. shes a freakin vocal BEAST. AND SHE SOUNDS JUST LIKE THE RECORD..❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
That was amazing, powerful, touching and pure epic greatness! I am blown away by her performance!!!! If I was in that audience you'd think I was in church and was overwhelmed with the Holy Spirit, 'cause I would've jumped up with my hands in the air, waving like I just don't care during her here to staaaay part, lol! This was live and it sounds better than the recording...big or small, J.H. is fabulous!!
What did my edges ever do to you Jennifer, they will never grow back, you snatched them bald. Those were only words that Maurice White wrote and you made it masterpiece 🥰🥰🥰🥰👍👍👍👍
