As a kid, this song would play in my moms lullaby list, whenever it played I either ran up and skipped it, or curled up in a ball and froze. The song still scares me.
I didn’t cry when Prim died. Rue took all my tears. Rue was the first mockingjay. The revolution started at her death. She didn’t deserve to die. No one did. They were all just children.
I've never seen Hunger games but I love this song. It reminds me of humanity's pride, wars, all the terrible things people have done to each other. I'm reading Hiroshima's diary and this song gives me chills when I think about what they had to go through. "They strung up a man, they said who murdered three" It's enough to make a grown man cry.
It's been almost a year since you made this comment but in case you have not read or seen the hunger games I recommend reading the books then then the movies (it's really Good 😊)
I have finished reading the books a long time ago, but I go back to this song in the book and just sit there singing it to myself😌 it's just so soothing to me. And then I found this and now I dont have to read it to myself. I can... just relax and listen😌
I just finished Catching Fire. I know what happens in Mockingjay but I still am reading the series. I really love the series, I can't wait to get my hands on the ballad of songbirds soon.
I remember watching this movie in the theaters with my mom. This scene shook me to my core, to see and hear this on the big screen. To this day I listen to this song and get chills.
she is young and the feeling did get across. and that is what was important. she stands for herself. and today, she will leed a group of fighters, a large group....and that is penance fro making fun of people....they are many the kids. and want to know why, why they are all dying.
For those who want the meaning of this song it’s about a man who was suspected and charged with murder the penalty was death so before he was about to go be hung at the hanging tree he called out for his love to flee (run away) or for her to meet him at the hanging tree to wear a necklace of hope side by side with him (means they would hang there together)
After finishing The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes, everything about the hunger games series hit harder than ever. All of the symbols, all of the hatred, the psychology... They come from there.
I loved the book. I was skeptical at first because I didn’t want to not hate snow. But she’s genius in her showings. Nobody is all good or all bad. And the connections between all the other books. She’s a god!
I can only imagine how much it must have affected Snow mentally, to hear this song again, but this time, as the face of the rebellion, so many years later.
+viki Boticki I was just reading it and thinking the exact same thing! First time reading, but definitely not the first time hearing the song. *shivers* This is fucking amazing.
the lryics are explained in the book, and if you know the full meaning you wouldn't say that lol Full meaning as explained by katness: "At the beginning, it sounds like a guy is trying to get his girlfriend to secretly meet up with him at midnight. But it’s an odd place for a tryst, a hanging tree, where a man was hung for murder. The murderer’s lover must have had something to do with the killing, or maybe they were just going to punish her anyway, because his corpse called out for her to flee. That’s weird obviously, the talking-corpse bit, but it’s not until the third verse that “The Hanging Tree” begins to get unnerving. You realize the singer of the song is the dead murderer. He’s still in the hanging tree. And even though he told his lover to flee, he keeps asking if she’s coming to meet him. The phrase Where I told you to run, so we’d both be free is the most troubling because at first you think he’s talking about when he told her to flee, presumably to safety. But then you wonder if he meant for her to run to him. To death. In the final stanza, it’s clear that that’s what he’s waiting for. His lover, with her rope necklace, hanging dead next to him in the tree." Katness version, while maybe incorrect makes more sense. Snows version is probally more correct however Snow: "Now he got it. The song, the speaker in the song, was Billy Taupe, and he was singing it to Lucy Gray. He’d witnessed Arlo’s death, heard the birds call out his last words, begged Lucy Gray to run away to freedom with him, and when she’d rejected him, he’d wanted her to hang with him rather than get to live without him."
I always loved this song but after reading the prequel, it has so much more meaning. Also the last thing Katniss told Peeta before they fell apart was that she will meet him at midnight in the lightning tree..
for me, i read the prequel first, and when i finally read mockingjay, i squealed and said 'that's it, that's the song!' it was an interesting experience, honestly, and one that i really loved.
@@Cj-lk6jp honestly i feel like reading TBoSaS before Mockingjay was better because im like “YOOO THATS WHY PEOPLE THINK KATNISS AND LUCY GRAY ARE RELATED”
The song will never be the same to me after reading The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes. Katniss would never know that this song was her biggest blow to Snow.
I love this song. In the books. In the movies. And when you learn about the actual meaning: The man wants his love to flee to him, not away to him. He things his love will be safer dead than alive. He wants her to run to him, so they can be safe in the afterlife. Sometimes a song doesn’t Need the best singer, it needs a singer who can sing it with emotion.
Unicorns and beyond! I know, I know, I’m sorry if I came off as condescending, I’m just literally the worlds biggest grammar Nazi, so sorry. Accept this peace offering:🎂🍰🍾
Who else feels like there's something about this song that's so special? To me I'm just attached to this song, there's something bout it that I like idek what it is
@Allison Gargiulo yes it feels like they sang the song with real emotions, like they were actually the characters in the movie not actors. It feels so right I can't fully explain it
The voices of the District residents would echo as they sang, rain pelting their bodies as they did so. They were undeterred. Neither the rain nor the danger of the coming battle. Many knew they wouldn't they wouldn't make it. But they weren't fighting for themselves. They were fighting for love. For their children and for the hope of a better future. And as the Peacekeepers lined the bridges, their vision obscured by rain and mist, the song was broken as a war cry fills the air. Tyranny would fall. No matter how many bodies fall, more replace them as the Peacekeepers fire. The Resistance fighters had no weapons of their own, and could only charge straight towards death. But for every one that fell, 5 jumped over their body to keep running. And as the defense is overwhelmed, the fighters quickly move their precious quarry into the dam. Large crates rigged with TNT. With the charges set, the survivors run. There would be no time to gather the dead. Their bodies would remain where they lay alongside the fallen Peacekeepers, and when the dam exploded, all bodies, from both sides, were swept away by the water. This was only one battle. Many more we're to come, but with me song, the people were given the hope they needed to finally fight for a future that many knew they wouldn't live to see. *Kiss* *2 fingers up* *Call of the Mockingjay*

After reading The Ballard of Songbirds and Snakes, this song hits so much different because now I know why Snow hates it so much because 1. He was actually at the hanging tree when the events in this song took place. He was a peacekeeper there at the time. 2. His girlfriend from like 60 years ago made up this song. 3. He also killed her. (Probably) 4. In the song it talks about a necklace of hope. The real words are necklace of ROPE...
I don’t think he killed her, he just left her alone in the middle of the forest after destroying the only thing that could’ve get him killed by the Capitole
Beautiful voice, beautiful face, beautiful acting skills, popular yet well made movies; I don't know who's guiding her career but they're doing an amazing job! It's about time Hollywood created a gigantic movie star on the level of a Julia Roberts in the early 90's. Well, actually Jennifer has surpassed Julia at this point in her career; every movie she's done since the first Hunger Games has been a hit and the blockbusters have been billion dollar grossers, way past Julia's big hits from back in the day. Good to see the movie star is alive and well.
Book Lyrics: Are you? Are you? Coming to the tree Where they string up a man. They said he murdered three. Strange things do happen here No stranger would it be if we met at midnight in the hanging tree. Are you? Are you? Coming to the tree Where a dead man called out for his love to flee Are you? Are you? Coming to the tree Where I told you too run So we could both be free Strange things do happen here No stranger would it be if we met at midnight in the hanging tree. Are you? Are you? Coming to the tree Where I told you to wear this necklace of rope Side by side with me? Are you? Are you? Coming to the tree? Even thought one word was changed necklace of rope makes it more creepier and suits better with such an ominous song
After reading THE BALLAD OF SONGBIRDS AND SNAKES, I can only imagine the feeling of President Snow hearing Katniss and the rebels sing THIS song as the theme of the rebellion... 😮
His just rewards if you ask me. knowing now what that song means ro that asshole makes it so much more powerful. He literally say lucy reborn in her that's why he was instantly against her because were lucy was vengeful and manipulative like him [in a way] Katniss was genuinely good and he couldn't understand it and hated her for it
After reading A Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes, this song makes so much sense. You see the song was an actual event that President Snow witnessed in district 12 when he was a teenager.
After listening to it now, I see a whole different meaning in the lyrics. Just seeing how passed down through the generations and yet no one knows where it REALY came from other than snow
I just finished it an hour ago. I am thinking about it but I don't know what to think. It's fascinating really and I was shocked to know about Tigress. This book just made me hungry for more information and some kind of ending. This song does really hit different.
Was reading an article about how singing during this scene gave JLaw anxiety to the point where she truly didn't want to do it. Very happy that she did :)
Fun fact about thomas Jefferson: he had at least 4 children with a slave named Sally, he justified slavery by saying they were all children even though he said all people are equal, and he fought for the federal government to have less power but when he became president and bought the Louisiana purchase that was actually out of his part of the governments power. He's the biggest hypocrite among the founding fathers😉
@@sabrinabrown4581 judging the actions that were deemed right by today's standards doesn't work. Was it wrong? Yes. But you're complaining that a sail boat can't fly like a plane. We acknowledge the good and the bad and move forward.
I love this song because it's so easy to sing. No vibrato or higher or lower octaves, basically an acapella, easy to remember the lyrics, easy notes to hit
When the crowd of people joins in it gives me the goosebumps every time. It is soothing to my soul. She has such a beautiful voice. I LOVE IT !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
It's funny how Jennifer Lawrence sang this song which has become our anthem and she is a complicit. Goes to show us that they truly are ACTORS, who act all the time and even after playing characters like Katniss her soul is very hollow.
Now the song has whole new meaning after the ballad of songbirds and snakes.. it made me wonder how snow must have felt when this came on crushing on him after 65 years of the origin
I believe it is ultimately why he succumb to the rebellion. Lucy was the only person that ever worked her way into his heart and exposed his weaknesses. He tried to kill her so that part of him would never exist. Weakness. With Katniss' rise, he was reminded of his weakness and Lucy, to which his actions then turned from that of a ruthless leader to a weak man trying to quell a raging fire. This book is a brilliant companion story to the original franchise. It tells us that the rebellion didn't start with Katniss - it had been brewing long before. Before the dark days.
I never appreciated the genius of this song until I read "Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes" The fourth Hunger Games book that explains about Jabberjays (who can repeat human speech perfectly) and Mocking Jays (who can only make melodies of the speech.) First verse is the original source, stood on the gallows. Second is the first Jabber Jay to pick it up and repeat. Third is where the rest of the Jabber flock in the trees pick it up and fill the forest with sound. Fourth is instrumental only when it has faded away only carried/remembered by Mocking Jays in their tuneful way.
I don't know if you guys felt it, but I think that this is the song that tells the whole story of all of the movies that are part of "The Hunger games"! It starts with only one voice, the one of the lonely girl that stands against everyone, just trying to help her sister. Then she becomes a leader, and she is not the only one that is singing, more and more people join her. And in the end, her voice is silent and only the people are singing... This is a great song that shows a great story!
Owen Caple Katniss stops singing because she's worn out from Prims death and many others, and falls into peace with Peeta. So the people forever sing with her to keep her fire burning for her even though it's been put out so much from the war and the games.
This song scares the shit outta me but it's so good. And knowing why Snow hates it so much just adds to it the most. THG is the best story I have ever read in my live. So glad it was written.
@@guilhermeluccacl to be completely honest with you, I forgot. It's been a year since I read and watched The Hunger Games. I think the song had something to do with hope. It's been a while. @@guilhermeluccacl Its sort of explained in " Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes". I'll try not to spoil anything, but Snows ex-lover is the one who wrote this song. So it always reminds him of her. Hope this helps
@@guilhermeluccaclwell I haven’t rlly read the prequel but in the trilogy Katniss and her sister Primrose made literal necklaces of rope and her mom saw this and banned the song cuz it was too creepy for young children to sing
@@ArkineYumaki it means to be able to @ someone like you did and be able to check your notifications and be able to report someone and upload a video and even know how to remix one
I realized after all this time is what the song means. The other half of people that didn't make it is what they're talking about. "If we met at midnight in the hanging tree." That means the ones that died were supposed to go to the fence. The fence is the hanging tree. But they were to scared to so they ran, trying to make it out. All 10,000 were supposed to make it to the "hanging tree". The quote "If we met at midnight in the hanging tree." also refers to when Snow sent in the peacekeepers to kill and destroy District 12. In other words,Gale and Katniss made a pact that they would run to the forest with both their families but since Katniss was not present,Gale had to do it himself but instead rescue almost all District 12. Once again, that quote also means that "If we met at midnight in the hanging tree." then it wouldn't have been a stranger. The verse before that quote explains it. "Strange things did happen her,no stranger would it be,If we met at midnight in the hanging tree." It wouldn't have been bad if all 10,000 made it and weren't scared. Sorry for the long explanation but I wanted to comment about what I realized.
it also refers to if Katniss and Peeta met at the lightning tree so they could both escape. "where I told you to run, so we'd both be free" - she wanted to escape the plan and run away with him. "dead man called out for his love to flee" - when he warned her about the air raid coming "man who murdered 3" - snow had three victors "necklace of rope" literal meaning of the hanging tree.
This was so deep.. I think the reason that everyone loved this franchise it was becouse jennifer Lawrence brought up a real performance as katness everdeen.. This song was so deep that every time I came here fire me goosebumps to listening to it.. such an honor being part of it and right after that any franchise was so succesfull as hunger games.. This song it's amazing congrats Suzanne Collins who wrote it so exceptionally..
@@kenthegeneral4088 what they did with The hunger games series were amazing. Bcoz books only showed katniss view only, she's the voice of the full book. If they followed book like copy/paste it would be different, maybe worse But they changed the pov for movie, which worked very well. It is the best way for the movie adoptions based on the books. But as a lotr fan, i read those books(lotr) bcoz of that film's, but after reading those books, i nearly forgot the film. Bcoz in the books, everybody respects everybody, dialogs are different. Same with the Hobbit - that book is lighter than lotr, but pj likely destroyed that story. Those movies are good(best too), but after read that books, i can't watch the film peacefully.
This song transcends the space of being just a good song and enters into the realm of being a true song. It has so many layers. Like many others, I get chills when the crowd joins in because of what that signifies. Most revolutions spring from the spirit of the individual and blanket the collective group with courage. Then we see the leader vanish into the people because any successful revolution consumes the hero. Fortunately the people don't need the hero anymore until the next time they do. This song is true. So very true.
Okay, everyone’s here because of Tik Tok, but Is there ANYONE here just because they love The Hunger Games? Edit: I'm so happy so many people can relate. Edit 2: I finished The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes yesterday, and wow, this song makes so much sense now.
+Ender Child ye, it's the rebels. they brought boxes with explosives to the capitol dam, which is what provides the capitol with power. they were chanting the song when they were marching towards it.
I watched the Hunger Games Mockingjay Part 1,and from THAT I didn't know nor realized that JLaw could sing! Nice voice. I have the book so after this I'll be reading one and is now a certified avid fan of Hunger Games❤❤❤ I'm also gonna download this song on my playlist
I know right? I've been scrolling for what seems like forever, and all that people want to talk about is: *"WhO iSnT HeRe FrOm TiKToK?!" And "TiKToK RuInS EvErYThInG!1!"* We get it... You hate people that share great songs and give them incredible exposure, that they probably wouldn't have gotten otherwise. Can we please talk about the amazing singer and meaning behind these beautiful, yet unnerving lyrics?
it was district 5' dam that was blown up! District 7 makes lumber. why would it have a dam. District 5 makes the electricity of the country. that's why it has a dam
I love how Katniss talked about how Prim ACTUALLY made “necklaces” of rope Also this song is sooooo good and very dark and it’s been stuck in my head forever
Apparently Jennifer was self-conscious of her singing voice, and wanted a voice over from a professional singer, but i think she has a beautiful voice.
Here’s what I think this song means: This song tells the story of a man who was charged with murder (who did not commit the crime). He was targeted and he tells his love to flee for her life and in her he would live on. He asks her to return to the tree when she can return. Something happens and she is either unable to go to safety or chooses not to and consequently is killed. In the end, both of the lovers are killed and therefore lost to time. His spirit still waits for her, but as she is dead, she never comes.
It's more about this: A man is convicted of murdering 3 persons. He gets the death penalty and gets hanged. Before his hanging he tells hi love to flee or tho hang herself beside him, the necklace of hope.
Why is everyone saying that Jennifer is a bad singer??? I think she is SO good (especially compared to me) and Jens voice went exactly with the movie I can't imagine it in a diff voice so HATORS BACK OFF
+Angela Zetou well, she is not really singing, dont know why do they say she sings bad when she is half talking half singing and she is tuned, not like most singers nowadays xD
+Mistermathew999 True that and not just that she hadn't really practiced the song when the screned this scene and the song so i think she did pretty well
I love how she says "wear a necklace of hope." Because hope is said to be the greatest evil as it prolongs the suffering of man, in fact it's hope that is keeping him alive even after he is dead, another metaphor for how it keeps you hanging & waiting, yet terrifying that he wants her to also wear hope and suffer as he is, by HANGING on to hope.
And ironically the ACTUAL line was a necklace of ROPE implying that the visitor is hanging there with their lover. This makes it more about not sharing guilt for an action, rather than uniting in hardship.
*Spoilers from The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes* 🌹: This song, written by Lucy Gray Baird (the first District 12 victor), narrates the execution of Arlo Chance, a miner and a rebel who was hanged by the District 12 Peacekeepers for being responsable of an explosion in the mines that killed three people ( _They strung up a man they say they murdered three_ ). His last words, to a girl named Lil are “Run! Run, Lil! Ru-“ ( _Where a dead man called out for his love to flee_ ) after his death, jabberjays (they were not yet extinct) along with mockingjays hauntingly repeat his final moments. Coriolanus Snow is present in this event and in the performance on this song at the Hob, as he was punished to become a Peacekeeper for cheating in the 10th Hunger Games, he mentored Lucy Gray and he chose District 12 to fulfill his punishment, as he fall in love with her.
Additional information, this song can also related to Coriolanus Snow himself. As he also kills 3 people (Bobbin, that mayor girl, Sejanus indirectly), and he also ask Lucy (his lover) to run away too.
