Watching this in 2019 makes you remember that nothing in the car world is definitive. “Unlikely the F40 will ever be beat because today, the supercar is a dying breed” So thankful that couldn’t be further from how things turned out.

yep, Jeremy was wrong. At least Tiff realized how timeless and special the McLaren F1 was.

It's just nice to watch how Tiff thrashes that McLaren on track. He makes it look as simple as driving Vauxhall Corsa in 30 mph.

Tiff is serious car enthusiast and professional reviewer. Jeremy is more like a funny man reviewing cars.

In terms of entertainment I'd go for Clarkson obviously but when it comes to serious car talk I'd pick Tiff no doubt To quote James May's opinion of Clarkson "the man's a knob"

You guys know if 60 something year old Clarkson drove an F1 today he'd absolutely love it for how brutal and mechanical it is.

There was a definite lull at the end of the 90s for proper supercars. This was first broadcast in the year 2000. Just five years after this we had entered a second golden age of supercars. Lol all these had been launched in that short period: Murcielago, Veyron, Enzo, Carrera GT, Ford GT, Zonda, Koenigsegg CC, Maserati MC12, Saleen S7 and a list of other smaller but notable efforts. Ooops!

Oh, how wrong was Jeremy Clarkson. Not hating on him, he doesn't have a crystal ball to see the future. Supercars are now selling more than ever before, they are practical, fast, safe and reliable. And that is what people want. Nowadays nobody wants to check oil, sparks, leaks, flooded engines, a car that wont start in cold mornings. Whatever the car, people just want to get in and go, regardless of the environmental conditions. And that is what the McLaren F1 gave the world. It was expensive, yes it was, but the technology developed for that car has been made cheaper and it is now seen everywhere, from Nissans to Paganis.

Tiff is a far better driver than Clarkson, hell he had to teach Clarkson how to slide cars.....and Tiff is an ex Le Mans racer.....such control. I watched him playing with an R34 GTR like it was a go kart......sublime to watch and yes I am green with envy

Tiff Needell is probably the last driver ever that drove a McLaren F1 to its limits on a race track.

It's hilarious how wrong Jeremy was, all the supercars we have now is absurd. The likes of McLaren and Ferrari are building some magnificent cars, hell even Porsche is making some serious monsters

Tiff is by all means, one of the best drivers the UK's ever produced.

Top Gear has seriously gone to shit now. Having said that, so has Fifth Gear. Tiff Needell though is someone I take much more seriously and actually reviews the cars.

So miss Vicki and Tiff. I would take Tiff's opinion over Jeremy everyday all day. Tiff and Vicki were both professional drivers and Jeremy is not and the difference is staggering. Vicki is a real delight to watch and Tiff has so much more knowledge than Clarkson. Please bring Tiff and Vicki back they are so much better than their James, Richard and Jeremy and 1000 times better than the latest Top Gear lineup which is a huge bomb. The only one of the latest lineup that has any credibility at all is Chris Harris and his enthusiasm is so forced that it makes me want to vomit.

The big difference here is that Tiff can actually drive. In most of the scenes where Jeremy is sliding or drifting cars it's not actually him driving.

These two gentlemen should be presenting a show called 5th Top Gear, pure nostalgia!

For those not old enough, the previous incarnation of top gear had among others clarkson, tiff, quentin Wilson and vicki butler Henderson.

WOW was Jeremy wrong as hell XD. I think this was made in 1999, and the 90s were pretty good for supercars but I guess things were looking grim on the outside for the 2000s. However the 550 although it had problems was pretty decent and would only be replaced by the tweaked 575M. Despite what Jeremy says the 360 was actually quite good and the F430 would only make things even better. Admittedly hes right about Jaguar. Bugatti would go on to make the Veyron, the fastest production car in the world after its release. The "big Mercedes" would become the excellent SLR McLaren and the Diablo would be replaced by the awesome Murcielago. Not to mention the Zonda, Carrera GT, Enzo and tons more to come. The early 2000s would turn out to be some of the best years for cars in general.

Jeremy didn't see the future. Now he says all the good bits of the supercars he drives.. tiff is spot on.. Jeremy claxson is wrong and Timothy tiff is right.

In that times you can say that supercars were dying, until Saleen S7, Carrera GT, CCX, Veyron, Ultimate aero, Murciélago and Enzo came and save the day. Also the SLR Mclaren is great!!!

I believe Clarkson was right back then but only 4-5 years later it changed. Now we have the P1, LaFerrari, Bugatti, Pagani, Koeningsegg and so on.

I love the long-standing on-screen rivalry between Jeremy and Tiff it always makes me laugh. Yes JC was wrong, but being controversial is his thing and still is, hence why he is a marmite character and he divides opinion. I have always been a big fan and still am. I miss his top gear reviews, his satire, and humorous analogies, but the thing I find most fascinating about this particular video is JC's conclusion that the supercar was dying out and that the F1 was the pinnacle, the end of the line(which some say it is- I would certainly agree). but it is such good proof that even though somethings in life and in the world seem so obvious we really don't know f@$k all, and what the future holds. What will the car and the world look like in 20-25years time? Goodness knows.
