Thousands of junior doctors have taken to the streets across the country to protest for the 11th time as part of their long-running pay dispute.
Members of the British Medical Association (BMA) staged the first day of their five-day walkout in the early hours of Thursday morning.
The industrial action will continue until Tuesday, just two days before the general election, with NHS England warning of significant disruption to routine hospital services.

Pickets don’t effect change. It’s a protest, Corbyn is a protester. The election is seeking a Prime Minister who can effect changes like pay increases. This was always Corbyn’s mistake.

They are qualified doctors, working an independent practitioners (some junior doctors will have 300 patients under their care at one time). Plenty of junior doctors will have 10+ years working as a doctor under their belt. Their pay should reflect their level of skill and responsibility.

Excellent speaker. Junior doctors work for years just going through stress with past and future hardships and financial burdens for many years untill they qualify. That is without the financial burden of student fees that they have accrued whilst learning their skills. As a Chef I was earning more than that and I’m sure so are many other trades in many areas earning above that rate. Granted they will earn much more than I have done but there should be a fairer system even if it is a type of payback scheme when they are earning.

How misinformed you are . They signed their contract but want it go back to before they actually qualified. My appointments keep getting pushed back because of them . Leave & stop putting people at risk . Tell one of them to show his pay packet.

Long hours and shitty pay for our KEY workers, isn't justified, whilst the fat cats we elect fill their boots for doing F'all and keep giving themselves pay rises. Your appointments wouldn't have kept getting pushed back, had the junior doctors and nurses got what they deserve.

@@stuffandnonsense8528 less than 50k. Just under 41k but still higher than average junior doctors pay. And doing less hours than them (39hrs). With overtime I could potentially earn over 60k but I'm not one for overtime like my colleagues. Some of my colleagues really do earn 50-60k with overtime.

I'm pretty sure the apprentices working on airplanes are on a relatively low wage as well. However, as our stupid leaders can spend plenty of OUR money for war and very little for OUR services like the NHS, I'm not criticising them.

It is written law that nothing can be done once an election is called, absolutely nothing can be agreed. Striking during this time does nothing but directly hurt the patients you claim to care about! I would give you your pay rise but I would also have new contracts drawn up which would ban you from holding secondary jobs in the private sector completely, if you care about our nhs as much as you claim then you will have zero issue with it will you?? As armed forces we are not allowed to have secondary jobs, if it’s a good rule for us as public servants then it’s good for you, focus on the public you serve and who pay you with their hard earned taxes they pay, or does that not matter to you either??

The whole point is we didn’t know the age before we started training. It takes about 7-8 years of commitment to get to day 1 of being a junior doctor. In that time real terms pay has dramatically eroded. Unless doctors have suddenly worked out how to see the future they did not know the pay would be so poor. There are currently some junior doctors who started their medical journey nearly 2 decades ago, the pay in that time has fallen off a cliff

You can! Just go to medical school for 5-6 years getting in 100 debt, pay your registration fees/insurance etc and you can earn £15 too! Every junior doctor will be on different rota’s, although I’ve personally never been on a 10 hour, 5 day a week shift pattern

FY1’s pre strike started on £14 an hour, since striking its increased to £15. 15x 40 (hours per week) x 52 (weeks per year) = £31,200 That’s how much £15 is when you work a 40 hour week as your minimum hours (as per the English junior doctor contract).

It isn't. The armed forces are on less money and saves everyone's lives 24/7/365. Don't hear them whining and refuse to do the job they were trained for.

My point is it’s easy to tell other people what they should or shouldn’t do, how happy they should be with their pay but if you have not gone through what they have it’s just you whining. Their job is so much harder than most, life, death, grief, infection, disease, body fluids, injury. Most people do not want to go through that for 15 quid an hour. I respect the armed forces but by definition they also take lives.

If you think that's reasonable that a general 9-5 office person who gets to clock off makes the same or close to junior doctors (when we don't even have the staff to pull down the backlog as it is), then I know which side of the bridge you're sitting on. Plus while other countries standards of living have increased, our pay has stayed the same at 2008-2012 levels while everything costs more.

Well maybe we shouldn’t have agencies that charge crazy sums of money to the NHS. These agencies are the drain on the NHS. They can charge triple the usual hourly rate. If the doctors were paid more they wouldn’t need to work privately, it’s all by design of course

Junior doctors generally don’t do private work. As a second ‘job’ I pick up locum shifts in the NHS, as a third job I tutor GCSE and A-Level students (which actually pays 2-4 times my pay as a doctor)

@@mdog111 Defunding isn’t entirely to blame. The NHS is bloated and there’s too many cooks. Or middle management types with inflated wages sucking up all the funds. On top of that the funds they do have are wasted or misused or siphoned off. The irony is that on paper, American Healthcare is cheaper than our beloved NhS. It would cost us less as a nation to adopt that system than keep going with the NhS. Because honestly, no amount of money will fix it. It needs a shake up and lots and lots of useless people in useless positions need to be removed.

Since striking it’s increased from £14 to £15. I can assure you prior to the strikes I was on £14 an hour, my paycheque reminded me of that every month. It’s not JUST about the money, however as a doctor I can not perform my job if I’m living pay cheque to pay cheque, having to work second and third jobs to pay to live.

Are you genuinely asking this? If you are here you go: UK doctors are unpaid compared to colleagues in equivalent countries internationally and also compared to people in other fields with similar educational/training level in the UK. This has caused staff retention issues with doctors going abroad or into other fields like law, IT etc. By improving pay more doctors are likely to stay which will hopefully reduce the staffing crisis and thereby patient care. Currently due to staff shortages doctors are expected to permanently cover the job of 2-3 doctors without extra pay and are often stretched to care for significantly more patients than they safely can.

Its not hard, they are asking their employer (the government) to bring their pay back to what it was. If the workforce's pay continues to go down then doctors will leave the nhs (the nhs may sink afterwards) and be replaced by a laughably inferior system of 'apprentices' and 'associates'
