Chancellor Jeremy Hunt is set to announce an increase in the living wage, bringing it to £11 an hour from next April. He also intends to toughen sanctions on people who are on benefits who fail to look for work.
Susanna asks whether '[he's] simply announcing a policy that is already in place because [he] thinks it's a crowd pleaser.'
Jeremy Hunt says they 'do have the legal framework to impose those sanctions, the question is whether that actually happens.'
The Chancellor will later announce people on state benefits could have their payments reduced if they fail to look for work or refuse a job offer.

No mention of when you do work and claim UC (like so many low earners do) that they take 55p out of every £1 you earn in deductions - thus taking away half your earnings. The slogan of "Making work pay" is just total rubbish.

It was 67p for every pound when I briefly used it (2019) whilst I worked voluntary after my degree. If I kept my part time job at a gift store (6 hours on Saturday) I would have gotten a grand total of £12 extra on top of my claim (travel and parking costs deducted). So I quit :') no way was i going to give up my weekend for £12

That's if the dolts at one's local job centre can even differentiate between those applying for the "Working Tax Credit" portion of UC from those who are looking for work. I gave up with my application last summer when they told me I wouldn't get help with my mortgage (which I was NOT asking for) for nine months and that during that period I was not allowed to earn anything!! Imho the system broke when they made it a "universal" benefit, instead of leaving WTC alone

If they are raising the living wage then they also need to raise the amount before you start paying Income Tax from £12,570 to around £14,000. There's no point in paying more to those on the lowest incomes with one hand, only to then start taking it away with the other, due to them now having to pay Income Tax.

Same old sh*t. I went through the Job Centre during the job crash in the late 2000s and it was hell. I witnessed JCP staff bully and harass people, they were just cruel to some people who obviously had learning difficulties or mental issues. At the start I was told to only apply for work I was qualified for, which I did, eventually they were not happy with this and told me to apply for any job and I was applying for 10-20 jobs per week--many of them I was simply unqualified to do. This was still not enough for my advisor, they did nothing to help me get work, it was just an appointment once a week to get bullied by some a-hole who thought they were bill big b*llocks because they worked in a job centre and could talk down to people. The only thing they cared about was filling the same old factory vacancies that have a constant conveyor belt of people because the jobs are so bad.

I had this one woman who was a supervisor. I am not very tactful, and just state the flaming obvious, so she blethers on about skills and applying for any old cr@p and how you cannot always be so picky…then makes the fatal mistake of saying ‘Well, look at me, I’ve got a sociology degree and here I am, working in a job centre.’ I dunno to this day if she was pausing for laughter, but instead I said ‘Hmm, but that’s what happens if you get a sociology degree.’ Her face clouded over, she got in quite a hostile mood. I just looked puzzled. How many social workers would we need exactly? Obviously, you get a sociology degree, you take any job that pays half-decent. I just left bemused. Take care all.

Why bring her into it, its jeremy c*nt making this decision, not only that she stepped down, the fact is that they find money for lots of other things but when they overspend the first thing they turn to is cutting benefits when they should be cutting funding to illegals, no more spending money for them and turned around by the navy, no more foreign aid until we are in better shape and no more paying countries money to stop things they seem to not be doing.

When I was signing on back in 2012/13 I went to my 2 week appointment with my advisor got there on time could tell them the job's I applied for but I had forgot my book where I wrote the jobs down, my advisor said because he hadn't seen the jobs wrote down I'd get sanctioned, so I rushed home, 2 buses, than had to barrow money to get a taxi back there before they closed but I got there in time and handed my advisor my list of jobs, but I still got sanctioned because it didn't matter to them that I had got the proof to them or that there was over 25 jobs I had applied for all that mattered was that I didn't have that list at my appointment so it was classed as me not looking for work. It was made very clear if people didn't show proof of looking for work or didn't attend interviews they would get sanctioned so no this isn't a new threat I think Jeremy Hunt and the people he works with need to go do a week of shadowing at some job centres around the country.

How illogical, unflexible, cruel and utterly ridiculous!!! They are paid solely to help unemployed people find a job one would hope & expect? What difference does 2 hours make when you clearly showed that you had applied for 25 jobs- which to me shows that you are a strong minded, genuine, determined person who is trying very hard to get into work, which surely, is the entire point! Sanctions, should only be for those who are fit and well (confirmed by their Medically Qualified Practitioner ONLY- not some arbitrary “test” run by a profit making private company) and refuse to work but would rather claim benefits. I personally am not convinced that there are many such people, in the current economic climate, that actually EXIST! Those with Physical, Mental, and Learning Disabilities need financial, practical & emotional HELP and support to work if they are able to do so, and that needs to be with empathetic, supportive employers who understand their individual challenges, medical conditions and needs to help to keep them in work feeling valued, equal, & supported. Shove your “Sticks” to beat the unemployed with Hunt. Where are the “Carrots”? The support, encouragement, reassurance & practical help that so many valuable members of society with Disabilities need to give them the dignity of working and improving their lives?

I used to work with the JC work coaches and the problem is with how the job centre is run itself. The work coaches are sat around having private and often inappropriate conversations instead of actually helping claimants look for work yet they earn £30,000 plus a year. They've taken away all of the facilities that claimants used to be able to use to job search while in the actual job centre itself and alot of these claimants who are out of work suffer with some kind of mental health problem usually anxiety and depression that the doctors don't give out fit notes for. UC work coaches also refer claimants on to another service half of the time anyway so most long term claimants aren't even dealt with by the job centre and 9 time out 10 there's a communication issue between the outside organisation and the job centre itself. So this whole sanction thing won't work, you're not offering the correct services to get people back into work to begin with. Taking their money away won't do anything other than force someone not to eat or get electricity for a month. It won't work.

I once worked for a private job agency for a few weeks getting fired because l couldn't place enough people in jobs. I turned up for work ten minutes early one morning to find a salesman phoning up firms who'd advertised jobs in the newspapers selling them the idea they should readvertise the jobs with the agency who would save them time by sending them only well qualified professions etc. This was to create the idea they had files of good applicants which wasn't true at all. They just pulled people in from the street or by newspaper ad like anybody else. The employers would be phoned by several job agencies this way saying a fee would only be charged if they took on the applicant from them. Many employers would tell the agency where to go but some accepted the no taken applicant no fee arrangement. This meant these jobs were advertised in newspapers, job centres, private agencies. Since slightly different wording was used in each case they wouldn't be seen as the same jobs giving the impression there were more jobs available than was the case. There were even jobs invented that didn't exist in job centres to make the ads look more numerous. A friend once applied for a job advertised in a job centre only to be told the job was taken. A month later the card with the ad still hadn't been removed.

ohmygosh I am Canadian and i am horrified at the whole sanctions thing. some of these people dont have cell phones, some cant afford transportation, it is unthinkable to punish someone for not turning up for a meeting by taking away some or all of their money, how does that help? they then get behind in rent, they go hungry for weeks. they cant recover. find some other way.

A rise in the living wage could do us out of business, increase the wages of the lowest, then you have to increase the wages of those above them, and the wags of those above them, all the way to the top. I'd rather have a low paid job than none at all. Getting rid of zero hours contracts would be more sensible.

@@Uno-1968 Our management have chosen to use the living wage. And they are daft enough to stick to that, even if it risks the company.

Yeah, raised the national minimum wage, but guess what there’s something called tax which means more tax money for the government because you are earning more so you won’t see much of a difference in your pay packet

Kudos to Ed and Susannah with this and especially pointing out that IFS said this tax was already higher prior to Covid and the energy crisis! Great interview!

Skirting round the issue that Austerity failed, it inhibited growth and forced up taxes. Sadly now both Kid Starver and the Tories want to do it again. We need investment in public services, not cuts

Why do they assume that raising MW helps workers?? This is just a policy that they hope brings in more tax for them when in actual fact it slows down employment rates because employers will lay off people where possible and squeeze the most out of their now smaller workforce or raise prices on goods/services to make up the difference which impacts everyone. Next year we will have decrease in employment rates

They are not raising Minimum Wage, they always raise the 'living wage' which companies don't have to sign up to, very few jobs pay this living wage. Most pay minimum wage. Great point on the tax

In Britain we have got dictatorship of punishment system rather than reward, so if people finds out a suitable job with decant wages for good living standard then they will prefer to work instead of humiliated by inhuman idea of gangs like Jeremy Hunt or others, and don't need to go Job centre every week looks like temporary custody.

£11 an hour is still bad. Thats not enough for a single person to move out and live on and im so fed up with these people who don't know anything about UC works, or the things that claimants have to deal with when it comes to the job centre and the fact that their staff dont help you at all when it comes to looking for work, telling claimants that they're going to take their money away. That's a real clever thing to do in a cost of living crisis isnt it. Absolute joke. It's also no good saying that there are a million vacancies that need filling, most people are not qualified to do 99.9% of those jobs. It's not as simple as just putting any old person into any job available.
