I never really saw it in that way. For me at least, from the multiple versions I've both seen and heard, this scene is always very soft and full of half-spoken thoughts. Jenna doesn't know what to do and neither really does Pomatter in this situation. They both mean a lot more to each other than they're willing to admit, even to themselves. They can't say "I love you" because they can't afford to, especially with the circumstances. So this is them expressing their emotions to each other as much as they both know they safely can. It's a reassurance of something they both feel but know they can't really say out loud. Pomatter isn't just giving her the minimum amount of her "mattering" to him. He's literally opening himself up to her saying that he's willing to give her everything he can for "as long as" she'll let him. He's giving her himself and then giving her the lead, giving her the control that she does not have with Earl. This is straight-up a love song. Edit: That is not to say that your friend's experience was not very real and hurtful. That's a horrible situation. I just personally don't think that that is what this scene and song were trying to convey.
