in all honesty, it wasnt bashing Kobe. It was a good refreshing story. If you look at it a certain way Kobe kinda pushed him to be better in the regard of speaking up to himself. This is one of the best stories I've heard about playing with Kobe. Just really honest about Kobe's ego from a perspective of wanting to win games with a person he had to share the ball with. I also think a lot of players resented the attention Jeremy Lin got from Linsanity onward. But this is a great story of figuring out how to work with people and connect with people during the tough times
I felt bad for him for Linsanity because Melo was 100% in the wrong and even came off as racist to Asians during that’s; that’s why I don’t like Melo, he’d rather bitch and complain instead of competing for a chip in NY.

As a die-hard Kobe fan, let's just get this out of the way. Kobe does shoot his team out of games throughout his career, especially toward the latter part of his career. If you don't realize this, you are not a true Kobe fan. Fans live with him shooting the Lakers out sometimes. You cannot only take the good without the bad. The way Kobe always plays has such a small margin of error. Those tightly contested fade away over multiple defenders. Off balance three pointers. Going through traffic with contact layups. His body just couldn't keep it up anymore at that point. Nothing wrong with it. We all get old. No one is immured to that. Respect for JLin for standing up against Kobe. RIP Kobe my hero
Facts I'm also a die-hard Kobe fan but I gatta agree with this take. I remembered that game against the Nuggets when he tried to get the game winner over 2-3 defenders and missed. The Lakers ended up losing that game in OT. All Kobe had to do was pass the ball and this happened in the 2014-15 season a year before he retired. I wish he would've change his game like Lebron a little and let his teammates scored and stopped being a 1 on1 player during his latter years. He's still my favorite player tho

JLin is a true warrior and just as he said, that season Kobe still had the "winning at all costs" mentality, that changed in his last season after he announced his retirement, then he became a mentor. JLin loves to ball and has an incredible IQ, but is a pretty humble human being.
Kobe was mad at the wrong people that year. He should have been mad at Byron Scott. Scott clearly had no respect for Jeremy Lin and had no gameplan to win games. Kobe wasn't mad at Scott because they were both teammates. Kobe also wasn't healthy and Lin had to be the main guy because he was the only one who could create his own shot.
It reminded me of when Jordan came back to the Wizards. Both these guys are great players, like Jeremy Lin said, Jordan & Kobe were 35yo guys who think they're still in their 25yo bodies. Because of their greatness, their coaches and organizations are afraid to call them out for shooting their teams out of games.
The fact that Lin stood up for himself against Kobe during that rough season made Kobe gain respect for Lin is awesome. Most players would be scared to stand up to Kobe but that’s how respect is earned, when you fight for your right and not run away like a scared punk.
Jeremy Lin is always articulate and respectful. It was a joy being a Knicks fan and witnessing his 8 game performance run. Unfortunately he got injured and never really got back to that level. Nonetheless, he worked and was resilient in spite of all of his roadblocks. Salute to J Lin 🫡

Nothing Lin said was bitch about Kobe. He just answered the questions of what happened. And in reality that's what Kobe was during that period. No one said he was a terrible person but its what he said to some people like JLin who was effected by him because of abusive treatment to JLin, but he never said that's how Kobe treated everyone else.

But in the 21century we don't use those old methods to motivation, rather we use encouragement and knowledge support which( frankly )just as effective but without the demotivation and insecurity attached.

Sounds accurate. I remember how painful it was to watch that season. Scott the Tank Commander. I lost respect for Scott that year. I think the Kobe being 35 but think like he was 25 was spot on.
Isn't CP3 35 and playing like he's 25? Had Kobe at 31 not gotten the CP3 deal vetoed there would have never been a torn achilles. Because Kobe would not have been forced into playing the point guard position and carrying too large a load. It was unprecedented and a criminal act to veto an already done deal. And back that up with a NBA created media fake narrative "that nobody wants to play with Kobe" to try to prevent him from getting any help.
This was a real interview. Everyone has their ups and downs and Kobe as expected is a passionate person especially about basketball, but in personal lives he has a big heart.
Can't comment on how he was in his personal life, but he was sure an asshole on the court. One of the most selfish players I ever watched, back when I watched the game. That's one of the biggest reasons why his teams only won 4 percent less games when he was off the court, as opposed to the 35-40 percent lesser winning percentage when Jordan and James were off the court (and that's despite the fact they certainly had a few selfish moments of their own).

@@twondagreat8893 With James, I'm referring to events such as attempting to override his head coach when he was rookie, or more recently walking off the court with 5 minutes left. Generally, on the court itself, he has probably been one of the least selfish elite talents ever, at least for a non-PG. As for Jordan, yes, he was arguably more selfish than James on the court. In his defense, though, he shot so insanely well that he rarely shot his team into a loss. Kobe tried to shoot like he was Jordan, but he didn't have 50-55 percent field goal percentages to go with it, nor did he back it up on the other end of the court nearly so well. James is smart enough to shoot just the right amount to keep his field goal percentage way up around 50. But yea, MJ simply was so refined a talent that his selfishness rarely hurt his team. For Bryant, who was not nearly so efficient, it's a different story.

Kobe's been falsely deified since his tragic death but props to Jeremy for being honest about the ups and downs of Kobe's legacy. The best way to honor somebody is to be honest about who they were, to capture their full humanity. Kobe was as complex, mercurial and contradictory a character as the NBA has ever known.
Kobe was being an ass that year. Kobe was bad recovering from injury and was no longer himself but he still wanted to be the man, taking 30 shots with a very poor percentage. I remember in countless game, he was still taking bad shots thinking he was in his prime, but he couldn't do it anymore. So he would shoot Lakers into falling behind, then J Lin would lead the 2nd unit and catch up, but then Kobe had to take over in the 4th quarter and lose. Kobe couldn't have another guy run the offense and still had to be the man shooting 30 shots a game, that was why they couldn't coexist. Kobe couldn't admit that he wasn't who he used to be coming back from injury at 35. That year was horrible for Lin because he wasted a healthy year with the Lakers that was still Kobe dominant and was tanking by the middle of the season. Scott was limiting Lin's minutes because Scott was dominated by Kobe and was tanking. Whenever Lin played well and was making the Lakers close to winning, Scott would take Lin out. So Lin was coming off the bench in weird patterns, making it hard for LIn to get a rhythm. Lin still played well but he was often taken out when the Lakers were actually playing well without Kobe.
I am a huge laker fan and cannot recall between 2013-2017 where our second unit brought us back in a game led by jeremy Lin and Jordan hill. May be wrong but I doubt it. Lin was apart of our team for a season and did fairly well, but should have been a second option at PG. the PG position is the most competitive position in the sport right now and dude could only muster 11ppg in 25min of playing time. Like I said Not bad, but definitely not starter material. And most definitely not someone you should defer to in pivotal moments in a game. Last point: our roster was poorly constructed. there was no possible way we were going to win any games unless we changed our management. We had guys like Robert Sacre and Timofy Mosgov on contract. No way we were winning games

Τhe last two years of Kobe were just sad. Granteed the 2014/5 team was just garbage but seeing Kobe shooting 35% from the field was painful. Blame D’Antoni for that. Kobe basically ruined the last few years of his career by going all out to make the playoffs that year in 2012 since Howard and Nash were riddled with injuries and D’Antoni was overplaying Kobe to win games and make the playoffs which eventually led to the achilles injury, it’s a shame. Jeremy and Kobe weren't on board with tanking. The lakers were full on tank mode these years. It worked. We traded away young talent for AD and won a chip for it.

The reason Kobe got his unprecedented CP3 deal vetoed was because Kobe "with help" was the biggest roadblock in the way of Lebron James ( the NBA's poster child) winning championships. The reason why the Lakers got to put together a instant all star team was because Lebron James (the NBA's poster child) came to the Lakers and did what the league allowed him to do in Miami. You know when they allowed Lebron ( the 3rd best player in the league at the time) to join teams with D. Wade ( the 2nd best player in the league at the time) to beat Kobe (the best player in the league at the time). But they said it wasn't fair to small market teams to allow Kobe to get CP3.
biggest problem with Jlin was that with his play style, he has to be the play maker on a team.. which Jlin is pretty good at... But rest of the league did not give him a lot of chances, because he would be competing with Harden Kobe and Camelo on the same team.... and the few chances he had in Knicks and in Brooklyn..he blew it with bad luck (injuries)... If Jlin was a specialist, or after going to Hornets if he had trained to be a specialist.. knocking down 3s and occassionally being a sixth man... then I think JLin would be still playing. Oh well, Im still a fan tho... Hope he gets to play a few more seasons :)
I'm a Nets fan so it sucked to see him go out with an injury during the first game of the season and only play 37 games in 2 seasons. I wish he got to prove himself in Brooklyn. As a matter of fact, I wish he got to keep doing his thing with the Knicks. When Carmelo came back, it was said that Carmelo didn't want Lin to have the ball as much bc it would lower Carmelo's scoring.

I love that he felt honest enough to give this story. The entity of "Kobe" is so romanticized these days that people forget that he was a flawed person like everyone else. Don't get me wrong, he is the "black mamba" and we can learn a lot about growth and becoming great via the way he approached the game, but we can also learn from his flaws and mistakes as well. There are different leadership styles but I feel that every great leader is someone who can both command respect but also give out respect to the people that he is leading.

Star players sometimes understand the game more than their coaches. But Byron Scott would have felt disrespected by Kobe action.. Kobe was very disrespectful like MJ..
He wasn’t as bad as MJ to his teammates. Don’t do Kobe like that. Jeremy is right about post Achilles injury kobe though. It’s tough when you have been so great, but can no longer lead by example in the same way. In contrast to MJ, at least he let go and showed respect. MJ has not even cared about any of the ppl he hurt and moves on like it’s just part of the game

Popovich should pick up Jeremy Lin on a veteran minimum contract and see how he does for a year give the man a chance and I think you'll be good in San Antonio system he's a past first then score guy so and he can make plays on for himself him and DeMar DeRozan together on the wing I would like to see something like that

Even after winning finals mvp in 2007 he had to take a step back. Jeremy Lin had a moment and a decent career but much respect but Parker was next level.

What is sad is that, because Jeremy lin will speak up to kobe. It pretty much shows Jeremy definitely respected and valued himself, he probably spoke up for himself to other people. We all know the NBA management don't like when a player is like that, and look what ended up happening to lin's career.
Dude has a lifetime contract with xtep in China. Regardless how badly some players resented and treated Jeremy with his time in the league he got his ring got his shine and now he’s a made man for life. Humility and respect prevails

Exactly. Them not speaking for the last months after the convo wasn't about resentment. It was about having an understanding and taking it from that point to emplementing it into the game.
People like Lin and Dwight Coward had no respect for the proven champion and goat that was holding their sorry asses accountable. Because they didn't have the work ethic and discipline to follow and respect proven leadership.

problem was kobe still didnt talk to him till the end of the season. at least if that was jordan hed still mentor you to play better. kobe was like its me or nothing ill train by myself and let you lose cause i am not the superstar.
Nobody wants to talk about part. Kobe took a contract that crippled the Lakers, got injured, came back losing a lot of his mobility & acted like an ass to young players. RIP to Mamba but those were horrible times.

Kobe was a good player, but also an egotistical prick. The problem with him was, his ego was always greater than his skill, thats why a lot of people didn't want to play with him. Yes MJ also had a similar-sized ego but MJ was the goat. He was everything Kobe wanted to be.
very true.... and yet over almost every sport in every decade, name all all time great, a goat per say with their perspective pears who wasn't egotistical? Hard to find..... from Babe Ruth to Randy Moss, Kobe to Maradona (soccer) and the handful of greatest players in between. Even the successful money makers in this world. Its almost like their egos and lack of empathy is also watch pushes them further than others who hesitate as most humans do.

All of Kobe's greatest strengths - his intensity, his work-ethic, his demand for perfection, his self-confidence, his never-give-up attitude - were also his greatest weaknesses. It's a shame he didn't mellow out until after he retired, because I think had he balanced all those traits with the generous and mentoring attitude he had post-career, he would have been even greater.
@@Vinny.Xsee that's the point: J Lin is a much better person than Kobe ever was, but Kobe won multiple championships and other accolades while on the other hand J Lin is out of the league at this point. Kobe himself said he sacrificed many friendships for the sake of greatness. J Lin didn't prioritize winning over being a good person. Personally I would go the J Lin route, but I can't fault Kobe for the way he chose to go about things during his NBA career.
@@voldmerot Nicely put. Many people hate Kobe for his personality, but I think people mistake him to a certain extent. I mean yes, Kobe was egotistical and his self confidence was through the roof, but it was those qualities that made him successful like you said. He sacrificed one part of his life to win NBA championships. I mean majority of people will most likely take J Lin's/Tim Duncan type path but Kobe's way of approach also worked out. It is just matter of personal style and philosophy.
Kobe never shot over 40 times when Lin was on the Lakers. In fact, Kobe only shot over 30 twice while Lin was with the Lakers. Kobe did have a low shooting percentages in both of those games, and he did have a game where he went 1 for 14, but he never took 45 shots.
Lin is a pick and roll point guard who needs for the middle not to be clogged by some prima donna. Unfortunately, outside of New York he never really got that chance when he was healthy.
His NBA career could have gone better but at the end of the day he’s a great person, played for years & def made HUGE $$$ with all the commercials and endorsements he had in China.
It's not in Jeremy to say anything negative about anyone. He's too humble a guy. An extremely rare thing in the NBA. Ego and Pride are the essentials today.
Looking at this situation I feel like Kobe validated Lin as someone who has Mamba Mentality too. I feel like he wouldn't just be talking to anyone in the middle of the night about the game if he didn't respect their opinion. For instants MJ used said that Kobe used to randomly message MJ in the middle of the night too and they'd go on for hours about the game. It's rare that someone has this type of dedication studying film and doing OT work, NBA stars included. So, yea... I think Kobe low key fucked with JLin, it's just JLin ultimately didn't meet his expectations, which you gotta believe is the epitome of performance. Also from Lins style of play in which he's had success, it seems he needs to be the IT guy, which on a team with Kobe, Kobe already fulfills that role.
Thanks Jeremy for giving us this story. Love here more and more about Kobe. I knew his attitude wasn't for everyone but no one ever wants to me speak down him cause of the respect for him.
Two takeaways ... not speaking to your own teammate for the last 4 months of the season must have been AWKWARD as hell. And how does Kobe perform at that level with 2-3 hours of sleep? That just blows my mind and really exemplifies mind over matter
A really humble dude. He was playing on my craps table asking me how to play craps. At first I didn't recognize him then I realized who he was once his big mouth agent started talking.
Kabwe was in the process of being washed up. He had something to prove, but his body wasn’t keeping up. His low stats in those two years proved it. To someone living in self deception, the thing they hate the most is someone telling them the inconvenient truth.

Props to Lin for standing up to one of the goats who was just goin thru it at the time and tripping out on his teammates. So many Kobe diehards are some of the biggest ball hogs ever thinking they can make all those crazy shots and do it all themselves like he did but not even Kobe could do that every night
I remember that season. The Lakers wasted a whole season. Kobe was the scoring leader at the beginning of the season because he was taking like 30-40 shots a game but shooting like 30something%. Lin actually made Lakers competitive and shared the ball but then in the 4th it would be Kobe time and lose. Then Lakers management decided to tank the season for the draft picks. That when it got really weird because Kobe still wanted to get to the playoff, Lin wanted to play well, players wanted to win but and Coach Scott was ordered to tank yet he was afraid of Kobe. It was just weird. So what happened was Lin who still wanted to win started getting these really weird, in consistent playtime and Kobe and Lin couldn't really play together because they both needed the ball. So it was just a awful season for everyone except the management who were successful in tanking the season.
