Jeremy Mayfield shares on The Dale Jr. Download about the day he planted his flag in the ground -- Pocono in 2000 when he moved Dale Earnhardt, on the final corner, to win. Mayfield details to Dale and co-host Mike Davis the controversial tangle and what the Intimidator's reaction was the next time they saw each other.

I met Jeremy 2 months after that Pocono win at 12 years old down here in FL 20 mins west of Daytona international speedway. He and a few other drivers were singing autographs at our local grocery store and I handed Jeremy a page from a magazine that showed him giving the bumper to Earnhardt. I said Mr Mayfield can you sign this please he said hell yeah of course thanks for coming out I said that was one hell of a win man he laughed and after signing his name he wrote one hell of a win man on that picture.

That was actually the first race I ever attended with my then girlfriend now wife! We worked with somebody who knew somebody who helped us get pit passes through Steve Grissom's team. And we enjoyed all the perks of following Dale's car through inspection and hanging out in Dale's pit all day! We even helped cover the toolboxes and such when it started raining in one turn. We were so pissed when Jeremy knocked Dale out of the way but it's kind of cool to hear the story behind it after all these years. We weren't allowed to have alcohol in the pits during the race but after we left and we're sitting in traffic in the parking lot folks kept giving us beers and we were pretty lit by the time we finally left the parking lot. When we got home I watched the race and saw myself taking pictures of Dale getting his pit stops! I screamed to my wife "I'm on TV!!!"😁 The Square D car had issues and left so their pit was empty and that is where I stood! Those were fond memories of our trip from Ohio to Pocono!!! Now we live next door to Mooresville NC!!!🏁

That's an awesome story. I was behind pit wall at Auto Club this year during pre-race. It's so cool seeing the crews set up for the race. My friend asked one of Chase Briscoe pit crew members about the tires, and I jinxed Blaney's pit crew by wishing them luck 😰🤣. You can also watch tech inspection and see the cars go by in the Infield at Phoenix. It's an experience like no other getting that close

I remember my first trip to pocono, dale sr won both saturday and sunday that year! Never will forget waking up sunday am and realizing I'd forgotten tooth paste (i camped out in my '77 chevy van) asked some good ole boys camping next to me if they had any, one hands me a jar of shine and says, "nah we aint got any, but here this will work as good as any mouth wash"....I damn sure needed something, so I took a swallow and swirled it around my mouth and spit it out as fasts as I could! Then he give me a drink of orange juice, which I definitely swallowed in one big gulp to put out the fire from that shine! super cool memories thanks for sharing.....I'm about 30 miles or so north or Martinsville here! Wish I'd have been there live to seen the "hail mellon" a few weeks ago!

Loved being able to hear this story! I was watching that race as a huge Earnhardt fan. I wanted him to get that win and I was pissed. After about an hour, I realized that was pretty effing cool given how many times we saw Dale on the other side of it. And he didn't try to just wreck him. It was ballsy and he deserved to get a race win for it. And if he hadn't won, I'm guessing the big guy would've been way less understanding. I can only imagine how pissed-off he was in the moment. Makes me laugh to think about. Being a Dale Earnhardt fan was an amazing ride. That said, Jeremy Mayfield has a golden moment in big-time racing that no one can ever take from him.

This podcast has created a lot of interest in Jeremy and a few people have posted some of his highlights. This race being one of them. Watching it again what you see is Jeremy really did race him with respect and class - Dale got loose and Jeremy helped for sure, and he was probably going to move him if that didn't happen. But like the announcers and Jeremy said, Dale would have done the exact same thing. I do think Jeremy's comments were a little too cocky, by repeating the "rattle his cage" part. But Dale's comment that the one finger hand signal was just him letting Jeremy know, "you're #1" is Classic.

He flipped off Ray everham pulling into the pits in 1997 Daytona after the ambulance incident. But he had a big smile on his face while he was doing it. - Dale did it in the sense of “I’ll get you next time, or I’m still here btch!”. 2001 Daytona 500 lap 88 Dale flipped of Kurt Busch for ice skating off turn #4 I imagine Kurt did the rookie move of getting air under the car coming off 4 and you lose traction and start ice skating or we would back in the day I’m the gen 4 before the repave
