Jeff takes this episode of History Hunters to Modesto, Turlock, Riverbank and Escalon which was home for a time for some well-known famous people!
The celebrities who lived in Modesto include Jeremy Renner, Tim Olyphant, Carol Channing, George Lucas, Harve Presnell, James Marsters, 1972 Olympic swimming champion Mark Spitz, and rock musician Mike Allsup.
In Turlock, Jeff stops by the house stayed in by actress Hedy Lamarr, and where Jack Elam lived in his youth. Elam also had his first job out of college at the Bank of America in downtown Turlock. James Mitchell also attended Turlock High School.
In Riverbank we visit the site of leveled house where country singer Merle Haggard lived with his uncle.
In Ceres we'll swing by the house of former Congressman Gary Condit where he lived during the Chandra Levy scandal.
Actor and team roping champion Ben Johnson had a ranch on Skiff Road north of Escalon and rural San Joaquin County.

Holly Mackerel Jeff, this video brought tears to my eyes. I aways learn a lot from your videos, but this one went over the top on people I knew and places you filmed. When I was young kid, my family were bowlers at McHenry Bowl. I knew Art and Lee Renner at McHenry Bowl. We were at the bowl all the time. My dad has 2 - 300 games on the 300 board if they still have the board up. Then you showed my high schools. My freshman year was at Downey High. Beyer High was finished the next year and I was transferred there because we lived closer to Beyer. I went to Somerset Junior high too. Hope to go back for my Beyer High 50 year reunion next year. Lakewood Cemetery is where my family is buried too. Some of the markers you showed had the same design as my mom and dad head markers. Great job on the video of the famous people, I learned a lot about the folks from Modesto. There were other places you showed that I knew very well, but will spare you haha. What a nice job on the video! ( As usual)

Back when I worked at Gallo Winery, I remember Tim Olyphant sitting in the lobby where my wife would try to talk with him when she was the receptionist at the operations building; he was a lot quieter back then. His Father Chuck was our VP of Operations. Another famous actor lived in the same rest home that my mother in law work in Turlock…Slim Pickens.

Oh my, memories!! My husband was from Modesto and we visited and then lived there about 1972-1975 when it had a population of 65,000. All the little towns around it were mentioned and brought back memories! We saw American Graffiti when it came out at the theater on McHenry Avenue and cruising commenced on the avenue just like in the movie after the film was over. I loved Harve Presnell in Paint Your Wagon and was thrilled when my MIL said they attended the premiere when it was held in Modesto with Harve. Modesto was a pretty town, my FIL had two Dennys franchises in town and realized his dream of building a boat shop Bob's Marine named for him and his BF (both boat racers) but he died not long after of cancer. He and my MIL are resting at Lakewood Cemetery in Hughson among the Presnells and Renners (I now see). Miss the Modesto of that time but it grew to over 250,000 in 80s and probably much more now.

I heard a story about Merle Haggard on Paul Harvey. It could be apocryphal but it was very intriguing. When Merle was in prison, he was given the chance to escape with a guy. He turned it down, because he was almost out. The guy wound up getting caught a given a life sentence or death penalty, can’t remember for sure.

As a kid, we watched all the westerns so I have to add Jack Elam to the list - he was a great actor. So sad hearing about the injury to his eye. It was so interesting hearing about all the show biz personalities and seeing where they lived and went to school. Another great video - thank you!

Jacks story about his eye, reminds me of my late dad. He went blind in one eye 👁️ when he was accidentally stabbed in it with a pocket knife, in his first year of high school. He pulled the knife out, put his hand over it and ran home (which was on the same street, about 500 meters away). Thank you Jeff. ❤Jodie 🇦🇺

I live 3 blocks from Carol Channings house, 5 blocks from George Lucas parents house in North Modesto. I went to Beyer Highschool from 1990-94 just missing classes with Jeremy Renner. My father born in 1931 had me at 45 years old, who went to high-school with Harve Presnell (Fargo) and played football together at Modesto high wearing leather helmets. My father died at 91 years old just 2 years ago, he talked about Harve often, especially when he was in a movie we we're watching. It's amazing all the history that is around me, Modesto is such a small historical town. I'm sure I will never leave, and looking at what's going on in the rest of the world makes me think, there's no place like home. ❤

Some claim that one of them played the first rock and roll riff on his bass guitar in the late 1930's. Back in the '30s, '40s, and early '50s Modesto was a western hub of C&W music with a lot of musicians living in Sunrise Village Mobile Home Park.

I retired from trucking 4 yrs ago. Spent alot of time in the Central Valley 30 yrs ago running back & forth to the various coolers & produce sheds. Orange County boy developed a love & affection for the CV back then. I used to give tours of the homes of the stars about 40 yrs ago and knew some were up that way. I think after meeting a couple over the years and as I watched your video is just how regular folk from otherwise unremarkable and humble places become "somebody" with time. It really is a construct of our culture, isn't it! Otherwise, we are all really just the same, putting on our pants one leg at a time, like everybody else. Thanks for the great video. Had me remembering the smells of citrus trees and the heat all over again. Greetings from Utah brother! 😊

Ben Johnson and Jack Elam were two actors I enjoyed watching while growing up. As always Jeff this is super work you do, and so so informative. You covered some ground in this one. Really enjoyed the video.

That was a long one but packed full of information that you found and reported to us, wow! I had no idea there were that many movie folks who called central CA home. Thanks for enduring the 100° heat as all of us are experiencing. See ya next Sunday!

Jeff. Thanks for the video. Out of all the people you show cased. Ben Johnson would be my favorite . He was one hell of a cowboy who could ride a horse to no end. Plus im a big John Wayne fan . So there's that . Keep up the good work . Todd from Chicago.
