Not only did no one have any reason to look back on him more positively... he was criminally underrated throughout his career. That is why he is more highly-rated now - because not a single stupid TV pundit or commentator said anything whatsoever about him when he was playing. It was all about Beckham, then Rooney, then Ronaldo. When Ronaldo9, Pele and Ronaldinho heaped the praise on Scholes, when Messi, Xavi and Guardiola, did the same, when Ferguson and Charlton did the same, when Zidane and Henri did too, when Figo, Mourinho and Ronaldo7 did as well, it wasn't because they had some revisionist, pro-ginger agenda. nwowolfpacdx Woodgate certainly didn't fill his potential but back in the day he was one of the few classiest defenders that made defending look so easy. Ledley King is another one.
