As I just watched "Alien Covenant" this week, and noticed music from the original Alien interpolated into the soundtrack, I thought I'd have a go at re-recording a cue from Jerry Goldsmith's incredible score to "Alien". This has been created with virtual instruments.
Sounds used:
Strings: Spitfire Audio Chamber Strings & Albion
Brass: Cinesamples Cinebrass Core and Cinebrass PRO
Woodwinds: Spitfire Audio Symphonic Woodwinds & Orchestral Tools Symphonic Sphere
Percussion: Spitfire Audio Joby Burgess Percussion
Harps: Orchestral Tools Symphonic Sphere
FX: Mixed in using Waves Abbey Road Vinyl and Studio Classics, U-he Satin and T-Racks.
Composition © Jerry Goldsmith

Ludo Somnus Thanks. Yes, all vsts. Sounds listed in the description. One trick I use is dropping in the original recording in and tempo mapping it before I start so that my version will push and pull in all the same places. Works well on this one I think.

Thanks. Listening back, this one came out well. Better than others probably. Someone suggested doing a break down of Goldsmith's "Total Recall" score, so was thinking that would be a good one to do at some point.

"Wonderful" is maybe too little for this! You did a fantastic job, it sounds 110% convincing, were it not for the Cubase screencast I could have mistaken it for a real orchestra. Plus, this is one of the best movie's score ever, those initial flute triads... thank you for this video (just subscribed, of course).

WOW. This is what i call solid editing skills. Good production, convincing result, good room feel, perfect use of articulations. Composerfriend - you got a new follower ;) What did you use for the strings if i may ask? The tone has got a lot of air. Spitfire? All the best and keep up the great work! P.s.: The only thing that didnt work well IMO is the transition at 1:04 which feels a little bit cut off. Maybei wouldnt let the notes stopp so abruptly here
@AlexBallMusic
@AlexBallMusic 7 лет назад
Chris Schlee Thanks Chris. List of sounds used in the description. But yeah, it's Spitfire. 1'04". Know what you mean. Did spend a lot of time trying to make it sound like the original, which does also sound like a fairly abrupt change at that point too. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-J1sV-E6S7x0.html In hindsight, also should have made more of the delay FX on the woodwind as they're more prominent in the original.

Ever consider sharing your DAW session for mockups like this? Yes, won't sound the same for the person trying to recreate but it would be a great lesson. G lydian runs at :57 are unfortunate.. midi just doesn't do Debussy style flourishes well.

Just wanted to mention another element of interest at bars 30-35 : the sustained F4 (+F5?) which has a different function in each individual chord : root, b5, 7,5....until it shifts to G on the EbM7.

Jean-Michel MAGNIEZ Really good point. Pedal note that glues quite unrelated chords together seamlessly.

Awesome! Could you do some music that have the same movment of the woodwinds on this piece but on Brass? This kind of video is very intructive, I've learned a lot. Thnak you for that.
@AlexBallMusic
@AlexBallMusic 7 лет назад
Teo Oliver Thanks for the comment. Yeah, starting adding chords and info on my videos and getting feedback saying people find it useful (as do I) so will continue doing that I think. Brass - you could do what the woodwinds are doing in the intro, but it would be more difficult to control. Possibly could work on french horns. I find brass can do soft legato stuff nicely, but the mechanics of blowing through them makes soft short notes difficult. Woods are a bit more nimble with that kind of thing. Could work on harp or vibraphone quite well I reckon. They do soft very well.

+Sami Matar Yep, SM trumpets are great. Not so much for sharp short notes I find, but really nimble on melodic stuff and vibrato, rips, falls etc are ace. I should use them more than I do.

@jean-michelmagniez8157 7 лет назад
Awesome job! But I have a question. I don't know what source you worked from. Is it from Goldsmith's original notation? I'm asking that because you remain in 3/4 all the time or almost. Would it not make more sense to have an extra beat at bars 7,10, 13, 16, i.e., insert a 4/4 signature there, rather than slow down the tempo?
@AlexBallMusic
@AlexBallMusic 7 лет назад
Jean-Michel MAGNIEZ Thanks. Glad you liked it. I've got the score. I was surprised it's mainly in 3/4 too. I heard it differently, but this is exactly how it's written and conducted.
@jean-michelmagniez8157
@jean-michelmagniez8157 7 лет назад
Thanks for your answer. You've got the score, then.. That means what you wrote at bars 19-22 is what JG noted. That's very interesting. I mean, I tried my best to hear what he'd written there but I quickly gave up :)
@AlexBallMusic
@AlexBallMusic 7 лет назад
Jean-Michel MAGNIEZ That bit from 19 - 22 with the runs. It's actually written half the speed but played twice the tempo on the score. I kept the tempo the same to avoid awkward tempo programming. It's written as septuplet figures in that section. It basically is an effect, you don't really hear the notes. Just the Lydian b7 mode. Interestingly, that mode contains 5 notes of a whole-tone scale in it, so it's almost like that thing where you get a harpist to do glissandi beds in the whole tone scale for that cliche "dream" sound.
@jean-michelmagniez8157
@jean-michelmagniez8157 7 лет назад
Thanks for the infos, Alex. About that same passage, I was wondering what instrument plays the low A1, starting from the second beat of bar 19? A bassoon or maybe the serpent, or something else? (It's clearly audible in all renditions and I can see it on your Cubase capture).

@AlexBallMusic
@AlexBallMusic 7 лет назад
Charmand Grimloch Thanks. I call it a "re-record" because I've produced an original recording from scratch with virtual instruments playing the parts. Is there a better title I should use do you think?
@Schiborr
@Schiborr 7 лет назад
Well, I call "recordings" when I actually record the instruments either by myself or when I work with a live orchestra. And even then: When I would have a recording engineer, then I would be not call it my recording. Using samples which are recorded by Sample Developers I wouldn´t call then a re- recording, but more using their samples to create a digital mockup. At least from my definition. But regardless, it is good to see people doing mockups from classic film music bits.
@AlexBallMusic
@AlexBallMusic 7 лет назад
Charmand Grimloch Right, see what you mean. That makes sense. Semantics I guess. I view the exported file as a "recording" of that cue. But, I see your point. I programmed existing recordings. Mocking up cues - yeah enjoy doing these when I can. Actually a great education for me. Learned quite a bit about woodwind voicings on this one.
@Schiborr
@Schiborr 7 лет назад
Sorry for my nitpicking :D Btw: When you switch the C Mn / GMj Flute motif to C Mj / Gm Motif keeping C in the bass as usual you have another variation which Goldsmith used.
@AlexBallMusic
@AlexBallMusic 7 лет назад
Charmand Grimloch No problem - nitpick away! If it helps make better videos then it's all useful feedback. Chord variations - so basically the opposite? Does Cm to G and then C to Gm? One thing I didn't do too heavily is the tape echo he used on the original recording. If you listen to this cue it's really heavy on those opening woods. Quite a cool technique.

I think this tune is slighly influeced by the famous opening of Debussy's La Mer in which he describes th mood of a sunset over the ocean: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-hlR9rDJMEiQ.html which would make a fine cross reference to his cathedrale engloutie in your "Escape from New Your"-Video.
